Campgrounds and RV parks near Pryor, MT

The main draw is the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range, established in 1968 as the first federally designated wild horse range in the United States, home to a herd of roughly 120 free-roaming mustangs that inhabit the ridges above Bighorn Canyon. Wildlife viewing also includes bighorn sheep, mule deer, and raptors along the canyon rim. Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area anchors most day trips. Recreational opportunities include hiking on park trails that total roughly 17 miles and vary in difficulty, angling for around 38 fish species, bird watching, and boating, canoeing, and kayaking, with two marinas that stock boating supplies. In the mountains themselves, high-clearance vehicles can reach primitive tracks and old roads, and summer is prime wildflower season on the high plateau. Billings adds breweries, restaurants, and resupply for longer trips.

Summer is the primary RV season. July and August bring warm days, dry roads, and open access to the Pryor Mountain high country. Daytime highs in the Billings area typically climb into the mid-80s Fahrenheit, with overnight lows in the 50s, so campers should prepare for wide daily swings. Fire restrictions can appear in late summer, so check current orders before towing in. Spring and fall are quieter and cooler. Lower elevations near Billings and the canyon open earlier, while roads in the Pryor Mountains become impassable when wet, which is common during spring melt and after thunderstorms. Fall brings crisp nights, better wildlife activity, and reliable canyon access before snow returns. Winter is harsh. Mountain roads close or become impassable, and Bighorn Canyon campgrounds see minimal use even though most remain technically open year-round. Most RV renters stay near Billings during the cold months, where hookups, plowed roads, and services remain available.

Expect a split trip: full hookups and services in Billings, primitive conditions once you head south toward the mountains or canyon. Billings-area parks provide standard 30 and 50 amp power, sewer, water, and Wi-Fi. Bighorn Canyon NPS campgrounds offer basic facilities, with a portion of sites at Horseshoe Bend equipped with water and electric hookups and a dump station on-site. Roads into the Pryor Mountains are rough. High-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended for the interior; the tracks are rocky and often single-lane. Large rigs and travel trailers should stay on paved routes to canyon overlooks and use Billings as a base. Cell service is spotty in the canyon and absent in much of the wild horse range. Carry water, extra fuel, and paper maps, and watch for livestock and wildlife on reservation roads.
