These properties generally offer full or partial hookups and serve as practical basecamps for exploring the valley. Public land camping is concentrated in the Bitterroot National Forest, which operates numerous developed campgrounds across the forest, ranging from sites with electric and water hookups to primitive backcountry areas. The Lake Como Recreation Area, roughly 25 miles south of Victor between Hamilton and Darby, is one of the busier destinations and a common day trip for campers based near town.

Reservable Forest Service campgrounds in the Bitterroot National Forest are booked through Recreation.gov, the federal system that also handles permits for the surrounding wilderness. Booking windows generally open several months ahead, and summer weekends at popular sites should be reserved as early as possible. Not every site is reservable. The main Lake Como Campground, also called Lower Como, operates first-come, first-served and does not take reservations through Recreation.gov. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, a day-use pass is also required to access the Lake Como Recreation Area, and Senior, Annual, and Access passes are honored. Private parks near Victor, including Black Rabbit RV Park, Angler's Roost RV and Campground, Yellowrock Campground, Travellers Rest Cabins and RV Park, and The Jack Saloon, are booked directly with each property.
