Campgrounds near Cloudcroft
Cloudcroft sits high in the Sacramento Mountains of south-central New Mexico, surrounded by the Lincoln National Forest. The village is the highest incorporated town in the state at roughly 8,676 feet, which makes it a popular summer retreat for travelers escaping heat in Alamogordo, Las Cruces, and El Paso. RV travelers use it as a cool-weather basecamp within easy reach of White Sands National Park, about 40 miles down the highway.
Private RV parks in and around town cover most needs. Scenic Canyon RV Park and Cool Pines RV Park sit close to the village, while 16 Springs Canyon RV Park and Lazy Day Cabins and RV Hideaway are set east of Cloudcroft along the Highway 82 corridor. The Cloud RV Park rounds out the local options with hookup sites near the mountain.
National forest campgrounds managed by the Sacramento Ranger District, including Pines and Deerhead near the village, add public-land options with vault toilets, drinking water, and shaded conifer sites at elevations near 8,700 feet.
Things to do near Cloudcroft
The Osha Trail begins just outside Cloudcroft and delivers wide views of the Tularosa Basin in a short loop. The Mexican Canyon Trestle, a curved wooden railroad trestle built in 1899 for the Alamogordo and Sacramento Mountain Railway, is the standout stop at the Trestle Recreation Area on the west end of town. Mountain biking, hiking, and elk-watching are the core draws in the surrounding Lincoln National Forest.
Day trips fan out in every direction. The Sunspot Scenic Byway climbs south to the Sunspot Solar Observatory. West of the mountain, White Sands National Park offers dune hiking and sand sledding within an easy drive. Alamogordo, Ruidoso, and the historic town of Lincoln add museums, ski slopes in season, and Old West sites for family itineraries.

45° / 19°F 30 mmSnowy at elevation; most forest campgrounds closed
Cloudcroft's high elevation flips the usual New Mexico season pattern. Summer, from June through August, is peak camping season, with daytime highs typically in the 70s Fahrenheit and cool nights. The North American monsoon arrives in July, bringing frequent afternoon thunderstorms and the highest rainfall totals of the year. Fire restrictions on the Lincoln National Forest are common in early summer before the rains build in.
Spring warms slowly, and higher trails can hold snow into May. Fall brings crisp air, aspen color in the surrounding canyons, and lighter crowds through October. Winter is cold and snowy, with the town averaging roughly 60 inches of snow per year and December typically among the snowiest months. Most Forest Service campgrounds in the area operate on a seasonal schedule, generally opening in mid-May and closing by early October, so winter RV travel is limited to year-round private parks in and near town.
How to book a campground near Cloudcroft
Public campgrounds in the Lincoln National Forest use two systems. Group sites such as Aspen and Upper Fir require reservations through Recreation.gov, with booking windows that open several months in advance and fill quickly for summer weekends. Family campgrounds like Deerhead, Pines, and Saddle are largely first-come, first-served, so arriving midweek or before Friday afternoon improves chances during peak season.
Private RV parks around Cloudcroft take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Summer weekends, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day book out early, so lock in dates well ahead. For Forest Service questions, maps, and current fire or road status, the Sacramento Ranger District office in Cloudcroft is the local point of contact.
What to expect
Elevation is the biggest factor. At close to 8,700 feet, nights stay cool even in July, and travelers coming up from the desert should pack layers and expect slower cooking times at altitude. Roads into some forest campgrounds are gravel and can be rough, so check RV length limits before booking; national forest sites near Cloudcroft generally cap RV length at 30 feet.
Forest campgrounds typically have vault toilets and drinking water but no hookups, and cell service is limited outside the village. Wildlife, especially elk and mule deer, is common in and around campgrounds, so store food properly and keep pets leashed. Cloudcroft village has a small grocery, gas, and outdoor gear options for last-minute supplies, but larger stores are down the mountain in Alamogordo.

Compact campervans and travel trailers sit at the lower end, while Class A and Class C motorhomes with full amenities trend higher. newmexico.org/places-to-visit/regions/southeast/cloudcroft/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Cloudcroft, New Mexico?

There is no commercial driver's license (CDL) or special RV endorsement required by the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division for personal RVs, including Class A motorhomes, Class C motorhomes, campervans, travel trailers, and fifth wheels available on RVezy. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the U.S.? At checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip, and each plan covers damage to the RV up to defined limits along with liability coverage where applicable. Roadside assistance is part of every protection plan, so if you get a flat on the way to White Sands National Park or need a jumpstart in the Lincoln National Forest, help is one phone call away. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Cloudcroft RV booking?
Booking an RV rental in Cloudcroft is low risk because RVezy applies a standard cancellation policy to every reservation, including a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your trip with confidence. Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel, and the cancellation policy is set by RVezy rather than individual hosts, which keeps things consistent across listings. If your plans shift, open your trip in your RVezy account to see your refund options. Pro tip: message your host first about date changes, since many are happy to shift your Cloudcroft RV trip to a new weekend instead of canceling outright.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Cloudcroft RV rental?
Absolutely, Cloudcroft is one of the most dog-friendly mountain towns in New Mexico, and pet-friendly RV rental in Cloudcroft is easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching, and you'll see rigs whose hosts welcome dogs (a small pet fee may apply). Your pup will love the cool 9,000-foot air, the off-leash-friendly Osha Trail loop, and the dog-welcoming patios in the village. Lincoln National Forest allows leashed dogs on trails and at campgrounds like Sleepy Grass and Pines, and White Sands National Park (about 45 minutes downhill) allows leashed pets across the entire dune field. Pro tip: pack booties for the gypsum sand at White Sands, it can get hot by midday in summer.
nps.gov/whsa/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Cloudcroft?
Yes, RV delivery in Cloudcroft is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're flying into El Paso International Airport (about 100 miles south) or Alamogordo. Many RVezy hosts offer delivery directly to popular spots like Silver Springs RV Park, 16 Springs Canyon, Pines Campground, or a private cabin rental. Use the Delivery filter to see hosts who offer this service, then check their per-mile delivery fee on the listing. Your host arrives, levels the RV, hooks up water and electric, and walks you through every system so you're not figuring it out alone. For first time renting an RV, delivery to a full-hookup site is the smoothest possible start to a Cloudcroft RV trip.
flyelpaso.com/How far can I drive on a Cloudcroft RV rental, and is unlimited mileage available?
You've got plenty of range from Cloudcroft, and yes, RV rental with unlimited mileage is available from select hosts on RVezy. Most listings include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles billed at roughly $0.35 to $0.50 each. From Cloudcroft, popular destinations are well within reach: White Sands National Park is just 32 miles west (about an hour down Highway 82), Ruidoso is 45 miles north, Carlsbad Caverns National Park is about 150 miles east, and Roswell sits 110 miles northeast. If you're planning a bigger RV road trip from Cloudcroft (think Big Bend or Santa Fe), filter for unlimited-mileage listings or message the host to negotiate a higher daily allowance.
nps.gov/whsa/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Cloudcroft for an RV trip?
Cloudcroft has some of the best campgrounds in New Mexico, all surrounded by Ponderosa pine and Douglas fir at roughly 8,000 to 9,000 feet. Top picks for RV camping in Cloudcroft include Silver Springs RV Park (a short drive east, full hookups), Pines Campground in Lincoln National Forest (just off NM-244, vault toilets, suitable for RVs up to about 35 feet), Apache Campground (full hookups available, near the village), and Deerhead Campground (south of the village, smaller rigs). Pro tip: book Forest Service sites on Recreation.gov up to 6 months ahead, as summer weekends fill fast, especially around July 4th and Labor Day weekends.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/1106When is the best time of year for a Cloudcroft RV trip?
Cloudcroft is a true four-season mountain town, so the best time really depends on your style. June through early September is prime time, with daytime highs in the 70s and cool 40 to 50 degree nights, ideal for hiking and dodging the desert heat below (Alamogordo can be 30 degrees hotter on the same day). Late September into mid-October brings spectacular golden aspens. Winter (December to February) turns the village into a snow-play destination with Ski Cloudcroft and sledding hills, and daytime temps in the 30s to 40s. April and May are quieter and cheaper, though afternoon winds are common. Pro tip: monsoon thunderstorms roll in most July and August afternoons, plan hikes for the morning.
weather.gov/epz/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be able to handle Cloudcroft's mountain roads?
You've got this, and Cloudcroft is actually a great place for first time renting an RV. Your RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, leveling, hookups, propane, and the dump valve, so nothing is a mystery. Highway 82 climbs from Alamogordo to Cloudcroft with a 6 percent grade and one short tunnel (clearance 12 feet 8 inches), so plan a slow, steady drive in a lower gear and use engine braking on the way down. If you're nervous, choose a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental in Cloudcroft, and consider delivery so the host handles the climb. Pro tip: top off fuel in Alamogordo before heading up, prices are lower at lower elevation.
dot.nm.gov/travel-information/What if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RV rental in Cloudcroft, NM booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance through the renter protection plan for things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and tows, whether you are parked in the village or boondocking on a Lincoln National Forest road. Your host is also just a message away through the RVezy app for quick questions like how to relight the water heater or reset the inverter, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: cell service can be patchy in 16 Springs Canyon and parts of the forest, so screenshot your host's walkthrough notes and the roadside number before you lose signal.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip routes from Cloudcroft?
Cloudcroft is the perfect launchpad for an RV road trip from Cloudcroft into some of the Southwest's most unique landscapes. Popular routes include: down Highway 82 to White Sands National Park (32 miles, about 1 hour) for sunset on the dunes; north on Highway 244 and 70 to Ruidoso (45 miles) for casinos, racing, and Sierra Blanca views; east to Carlsbad Caverns National Park (150 miles, about 2.5 hours) for the world-famous bat flight; and northeast to Roswell (110 miles) for kitschy alien fun. For a bigger loop, head to Big Bend National Park in Texas (about 250 miles south). Note: travel into Mexico isn't covered, so keep your trip within the U.S.
nps.gov/cave/index.htmWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I expect in Cloudcroft?
Plan smart and your fuel budget for a Cloudcroft RV trip stays reasonable. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes around 10 to 14 mpg, Class A rigs 7 to 10 mpg, and tow vehicles pulling travel trailers about 10 to 13 mpg. New Mexico gas prices typically run a bit below the U.S. average, but Cloudcroft itself has only a couple of stations and prices climb with the elevation. Pro tip: fill up in Alamogordo before the climb up Highway 82, or in Tularosa on the way back from White Sands, you'll often save $0.30 to $0.50 per gallon versus prices in the village. Diesel is available in Alamogordo at most major stations.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Cloudcroft?
Book early and you'll have your pick of the best spots. Lincoln National Forest campgrounds like Pines, Sleepy Grass, Apache, and Deerhead open reservations up to 6 months in advance on Recreation.gov, and summer weekends (especially around July 4th and Labor Day) sell out within minutes of the booking window opening. Private parks like Silver Springs RV Park and 16 Springs RV Park take direct reservations and tend to fill 2 to 3 months ahead for peak summer. For shoulder season (May, late September, October), 2 to 4 weeks of lead time is usually plenty. Pro tip: most Forest Service campgrounds near Cloudcroft are open mid-May through early October only, so confirm dates before locking in your motorhome rental in Cloudcroft.
recreation.gov/What should I know about driving an RV in and around Cloudcroft?
Cloudcroft sits at 8,650 feet, so the drive in rewards a little preparation. From Alamogordo, U.S. 82 climbs 4,300 feet in about 16 miles with a 6 percent grade and one rock tunnel with a 12 feet 8 inches vertical clearance, comfortably fine for almost every RV on RVezy. Use low gears on the descent to save your brakes, watch for elk and mule deer at dawn and dusk, and slow down for the famous Mexican Canyon Trestle curves. Winter brings occasional snow and ice; the New Mexico Department of Transportation posts road conditions on nmroads.com. Pro tip: afternoon monsoon storms (July to August) can drop hail in minutes, just pull off and wait 15 minutes.
nmroads.com/What amenities will I find at Cloudcroft-area campgrounds?
Cloudcroft's campgrounds range from full-service to peaceful and primitive, so you can match the experience to your rig. Private parks like Silver Springs RV Park offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer) and on-site dump stations. Lincoln National Forest campgrounds such as Pines, Apache, Saddle, and Deerhead provide potable water spigots, vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings, but most sites have no hookups, so plan to dry camp. Apache Campground does offer some electric hookup sites. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank in the village before heading into Forest Service sites, and bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose since spigots can be a walk from your pad.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/lincoln/recarea/?recid=64790What's typically included inside a Cloudcroft RV rental?
Cloudcroft RV rentals come ready for the mountains. Expect a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stovetop, microwave, sink, cookware and dishes), a bathroom with toilet and shower in Class B campervans and up, comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on size, furnace heat (a must at 9,000 feet, even in summer), air conditioning, and seatbelted seating for travel. Most listings include linens, towels, a leveling kit, and outdoor chairs; many add a generator or solar for off-grid nights in Lincoln National Forest. Wi-Fi and TV vary by host. Pro tip: when you book a campervan rental in Cloudcroft, double-check the listing for a propane heater or diesel furnace, those chilly 40-degree summer nights make a huge difference.
fs.usda.gov/r03/lincolnWhat add-ons and pickup options should I look for when I rent an RV in Cloudcroft?
RVezy hosts in Cloudcroft offer add-ons that make life easier: delivery and setup, generator use, propane fill, bike racks, camp chairs and tables, kitchen kits, and even pre-stocked firewood. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Cloudcroft, Alamogordo, or La Luz, with orientation taking 30 to 60 minutes. Mileage policies typically include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extras at about $0.35 to $0.50 per mile, and unlimited mileage available on some listings. Generator hours often include 2 to 4 free per day. Pro tip: if you're heading to White Sands or boondocking on Forest Road 64, paying for the generator package upfront is almost always cheaper than the overage rate.
nps.gov/whsa/planyourvisit/camping.htmHow do payment and the security deposit work on an RVezy Cloudcroft rental?
Payment is simple and secure: when you book your RV rental in Cloudcroft on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host. A refundable security deposit (shown on each listing) is held separately from your booking payment and released after the trip once the RV is returned in the same condition. Any mileage or generator overages, if applicable, are reconciled against the deposit first. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos and a short walk-around video of the RV at pickup and dropoff, and share them in the RVezy message thread. That single habit prevents most deposit disputes and keeps your Cloudcroft RV trip stress-free from start to finish.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take a Cloudcroft RV rental out in the winter for skiing or snow play?
Yes, and winter is one of the most underrated times to rent an RV in Cloudcroft. Ski Cloudcroft typically opens late December through February when snow allows, and the village's tubing hills and groomed cross-country trails are a blast. Many RVezy hosts list winter-ready rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and 30-amp shore power, perfect for staying at Silver Springs RV Park or The Cloud RV Park, which stay open year-round. National Forest campgrounds close after early October, so plan around private full-hookup parks. Pro tip: ask your host to walk you through the antifreeze and tank-heater setup, and pack chains, even Highway 82 occasionally requires them after a heavy storm.
