Franklin Mountains State Park covers a large stretch of the range north of downtown and is known for its rugged terrain, extensive hiking and mountain biking trails, and scenic vistas. The park features over 100 miles of trails of varying difficulty levels, with trailheads at the Tom Mays Unit accessing routes toward North Franklin Peak. Rock climbing is popular in the McKelligon Canyon area. Visitors should bring their own gear, as the park does not rent equipment. In town, the Mission Trail links three historic Spanish missions south of downtown, and the El Paso Museum of Art and the Wyler Aerial Tramway area draw families. Day trips reach White Sands National Park, Guadalupe Mountains National Park, and Carlsbad Caverns within a few hours of drive time. Winter is generally mild but cold at night. El Paso typically has 42 frosty nights a year, including about half of December and January, and most of these colder nights hover just below 32 degrees Fahrenheit and are followed by daytime temperatures above freezing. Freshwater lines should be protected on cold nights.

Commercial RV parks around El Paso are practical stopovers rather than resort destinations. Expect paved or gravel pads, full hookups, coin laundry, and easy access to I-10, grocery stores, and fuel. Sites tend to be close together and shade is limited. Camping inside Franklin Mountains State Park is different. There is no running water or electricity, so preparedness for dry camping is essential. Campers should bring enough water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. All campsites are at the Tom Mays Unit. The Tom Mays Unit gate is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. From the first Saturday in April to the first Saturday in September, extended hours are 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Campers arriving after gate close should call the park ahead of time to arrange access.
