Campgrounds and RV parks near Alamogordo, NM

The main draw is White Sands National Park, the world's largest gypsum dunefield. Families drive the Dunes Drive, walk park trails, and sled the dunes. The park entrance sits about sixteen miles southwest of Alamogordo off US Highway 70. Note that a safety corridor along part of Dunes Drive has kept certain trails and pullouts closed, so check the park's alerts before planning specific hikes. South of town, Oliver Lee Memorial State Park is set against the Sacramento Mountains and features the Dog Canyon Trail plus a shorter Riparian Nature Trail past year-round spring pools. East and up the mountain, the Lincoln National Forest around Cloudcroft offers cooler temperatures and shaded hiking, a useful escape from summer heat in the basin. In town, the New Mexico Museum of Space History and the Alameda Park Zoo are common family stops. To the north, the BLM's Valley of Fires Recreation Area sits on one of the youngest lava flows in the continental United States and makes a good half-day side trip.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. March through May brings rising daytime highs with low humidity and minimal rainfall, and September through November returns to mild highs and cool nights after the summer heat breaks. Summer is hot in the Tularosa Basin, with June the warmest month and average highs near 89 degrees Fahrenheit. Afternoon sand temperatures at White Sands climb well above the air temperature. July and August bring the North American monsoon, when brief but heavy afternoon thunderstorms deliver most of the year's rainfall.
