The Sandia Mountains sit immediately east of the city, and many visitors ride the Sandia Peak Tram or drive the Sandia Crest National Scenic Byway for panoramic views of central New Mexico. The Cibola National Forest manages picnic sites, hiking, mountain-biking, and horseback trails along the byway and in the Manzanita Mountains south of I-40. Expect dry air, strong sun, and big daily temperature swings. Albuquerque sits above 5,000 feet, so new arrivals should hydrate, use sunscreen, and give kids and pets time to adjust before long hikes. Afternoon winds pick up on the mesas in spring, and monsoon storms can bring lightning and brief flash-flood risk in July and August. Most private parks in and around the city offer full hookups, laundry, showers, Wi-Fi, and pet areas.
