Campgrounds and RV parks near Los Alamos, NM

Bandelier National Monument is the anchor attraction. It protects cliff dwellings, petroglyphs, and mesa-top ruins, with more than 70 miles of hiking trails, most inside a designated wilderness. The Main Loop Trail from the visitor center reaches Tyuonyi pueblo and cavate rooms carved into the tuff walls of Frijoles Canyon. Beyond the monument, day trips include Valles Caldera National Preserve, White Rock Overlook, the Los Alamos History Museum, and the Bradbury Science Museum in town. Hikers staying at Juniper Campground - Bandelier National Monument can walk directly onto the Frey Trail or the Tyuonyi Overlook Trail from the campground. At Nambe Falls Recreational Area - Nambe Pueblo, visitors reach the falls on short trails, fish the reservoir for trout, and use small boats with electric motors. The camping season around Los Alamos runs mostly March through October, though some sites stay open all winter. The RV dump station and campground water spigots are turned off from roughly mid-October to mid-April, so rigs cannot fill tanks or dump during that window. Summer brings the North American Monsoon, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms from July into September. Snow is common at plateau elevations from November through March, and mountain roads can require chains.

Juniper Campground - Bandelier National Monument has three loops with paved pads, picnic tables, fire rings, and bear-proof food lockers. Comfort stations offer flush toilets and running water. There are no hookups and no showers, and only a handful of sites accommodate rigs longer than about 30 feet, most of them in the Coyote Loop. Elevation at the campground is about 6,600 feet, so cool nights are the norm even in summer. Inside Bandelier, private vehicle access into Frijoles Canyon is closed from mid-May to mid-October. A free shuttle runs from the campground amphitheater parking area to the visitor center during that window. Wildlife includes mule deer, Abert's squirrels, and black bears, so all food and scented items must be stored in the provided lockers or inside a hard-sided RV. Cell service is patchy, and there is no public WiFi in the park.
