Elephant Butte camping overview
Elephant Butte sits on the shore of the largest reservoir in New Mexico, a Rio Grande impoundment built by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in 1916. The town serves as the main staging point for Elephant Butte Lake State Park, which surrounds the reservoir and contains most of the developed public campgrounds RV renters will use. Elephant Butte Lake State Park encompasses 40,000 acres, giving campers a mix of shoreline sites, bluff-top overlooks, and inland desert loops.
RV renters have a range of options within a short drive. Elephant Butte Lake RV Resort and Enchanted View RV Park are full-hookup private parks in town, while Rio Lago RV Park and Landry mat offers a smaller in-town base with laundry on site. Inside the state park, Desert Cove and Lions Beach are among the closest developed public campgrounds to the water.
Besides sandy beaches, the State Park offers campgrounds, restrooms, picnic areas, playgrounds, and developed sites with electric and water hook-ups for RVs. Truth or Consequences, a short drive south, provides groceries, fuel, propane, and hot-springs bathhouses.
Things to do around Elephant Butte
The lake is the main draw. Elephant Butte Lake can accommodate watercraft of many styles and sizes: kayaks, jet skis, pontoons, sailboats, ski boats, cruisers, and houseboats. Sandy beaches near Lions Beach and Desert Cove are set up for swimming, paddleboards, and shoreline day camps, and visitors to the beaches are allowed campfires and charcoal fires on the beach within 150 feet of the water at the shoreline of the lake.
Anglers target a strong warm-water fishery: the reservoir contains striped bass, largemouth bass, crappie, walleye, and catfish. Wildlife watching is a bonus, since this is one of the few lakes in New Mexico that host White Pelican Colonies.
Off the water, families use the park playgrounds, drive to the historic Damsite structures, soak in Truth or Consequences hot springs, and explore nearby BLM land for hiking and dark-sky stargazing.

Summer is the busy season. When the mercury soars in summer, New Mexicans make a beeline for the lakeshore, so don't expect to have the lake to yourself. Holiday weekends can get crowded, especially on the 4th of July, and several popular events and festivals are held around the lakeside throughout summer. The lake is abuzz in the summer, especially on the three big holiday weekends, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Book state-park sites well ahead for those weekends.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel, with warm days, cool nights, and thinner crowds. Late-summer monsoon storms bring brief afternoon thunderstorms and the year's heaviest rain.
Winter is quiet but usable. Mild temperatures make it possible to camp through all four seasons, but some campgrounds close or run reduced services. RV renters should also check current lake levels before booking a shoreline site, since Elephant Butte Lake is at around 2% capacity in recent conditions, which shifts the waterline well away from some beach loops.
How to book campgrounds near Elephant Butte
State-park sites at Desert Cove and Lions Beach are managed through the New Mexico State Parks reservation system. Online reservations can be made up to six months in advance. Campsites can book up as fast, especially for holiday weekends, so book at least three months in advance. A day-use pass is also required for entry to the park.
Private parks in town, including Elephant Butte Lake RV Resort, Enchanted View RV Park, and Rio Lago RV Park and Landry mat, are booked directly with each property by phone or website, and typically hold sites further out than the state system.
Renters should note the state-park late-arrival policy: the customer must contact the park to advise them of late arrival, and the site will be released for reservations or first come, first served on the second day after 4:00 p.m., and no refund will be due.
What to expect on the ground
The landscape is high-desert shoreline at about 4,527 ft park elevation. Expect sun, wind, and limited natural shade at most sites, so awnings and sunshades earn their keep. Developed loops inside the state park have paved pads with electric and water; developed campgrounds with amenities such as restrooms, showers, RV hookups, and dump stations are available in the park.
Private parks in town offer full hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi at varying reliability, and sit within a short drive of restaurants and grocery stores. Cell coverage is generally good near town and weaker in the outer beach areas of the state park.
A few practical rules: OHVs, metal detectors and drones are not allowed at Elephant Butte Lake State Park, and campfire restrictions can be in place during dry months. Pack water for day trips, and check current lake access points at the visitor center before hauling boats to the ramp.
