Campgrounds near La Luz, New Mexico
La Luz is a small village in Otero County on the eastern edge of the Tularosa Basin, just north of Alamogordo and at the foot of the Sacramento Mountains. Most RV travelers use the area as a base for White Sands National Park, where great wave-like dunes of gypsum sand engulf 275 square miles of desert, creating the world's largest gypsum dune field. The park sits roughly 15 miles from Alamogordo along US Highway 70.
RV options cluster along US 54/70 in and around Alamogordo. Boot Hill RV Resort and the Alamogordo / White Sands KOA Journey are the closest full-service private parks, with 575 RV Park, White Sands Community RV Park Motorhome Park, and Desert Paradise MH and RV Park rounding out the nearby choices. These parks offer pull-through sites with full hookups (30 and 50 amps), paved lots, laundry, and easy access to grocery stores and fuel in Alamogordo.
Lincoln National Forest offers dispersed camping in the mountains east of Alamogordo near Cloudcroft, and elevations around 8,000 to 9,000 feet mean cooler temperatures, a good option for summer camping when the desert is hot.
Things to do near La Luz
White Sands National Park is the main draw. Dunes Drive is the only road in the park and runs for 16 miles round-trip with a short loop at the end, with picnic areas, outdoor exhibits, and access to marked hiking trails including the Playa Trail, Dune Life Nature Trail, Backcountry Camping Trail, and the strenuous Alkali Flat Trail. As of 2026, all backcountry camping remains closed indefinitely for site rehabilitation, so overnight stays inside the park are not currently allowed. Sand sledding on the gypsum dunes is popular with families, and rangers offer guided walks.
In Alamogordo, the New Mexico Museum of Space History covers regional space and rocketry history, and the Alameda Park Zoo, founded in 1898, claims to be the oldest zoo in the Southwestern United States, home to roughly 250 animals across about 90 species on a 12-acre site. Day trips reach the Three Rivers Petroglyph Site to the north and the mountain village of Cloudcroft for cooler air, hiking, and Lincoln National Forest trails.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel in the Tularosa Basin. Days are warm, nights are cool, and the dunes are pleasant to hike. Spring winds can be strong across the basin and occasionally kick up blowing sand, and alcohol is banned in the park from February through May, which has reduced spring-break crowding. Summer brings the busiest visitation, but heat pushes most families to the dunes at sunrise or in late afternoon.
Summer is hot in the basin, with daytime highs regularly in the low to mid-90s Fahrenheit. Afternoon thunderstorms arrive with the North American Monsoon in July and August, and missile range tests occur about twice a week, and the park and part of US 70 may be closed for an hour or two during testing.
Winter brings mild days and cold nights, with occasional light snow. Private RV parks in Alamogordo stay open year-round, while some higher-elevation forest campgrounds near Cloudcroft close seasonally.
How to book campgrounds near La Luz
Private RV parks handle their own reservations. Boot Hill RV Resort, Alamogordo / White Sands KOA Journey, 575 RV Park, White Sands Community RV Park Motorhome Park, and Desert Paradise MH and RV Park all take direct bookings through their own websites or by phone; book in advance for weekends or if a specific site type such as a long pull-through is needed.
For state and federal sites, systems differ. Oliver Lee Memorial State Park is open year round, and reservations can be made through the New Mexico State Parks system on ReserveAmerica up to 6 months in advance. No reservations or permits are required for BLM or national forest dispersed camping on public lands near White Sands, though the standard 14-day stay limit applies. Backcountry camping inside White Sands National Park is closed indefinitely for site rehabilitation.
What to expect
The corridor between La Luz and Alamogordo is a working desert town, not a resort area. Expect flat pull-through sites, full hookups, and easy access to grocery stores, laundromats, and fuel. The Alamogordo / White Sands KOA Journey is about 15 miles from the dunes and offers RV sites with full hookups, tent sites, and a few cabins, with amenities including a swimming pool, laundry, and hot showers. Boot Hill RV Resort and the other listed parks provide similar full-hookup service closer to town.
Cell service is generally reliable in and around Alamogordo. Gypsum dust from the dunes sticks to gear, shoes, and pets, so plan for a rinse-off after park visits. Shade is scarce at most desert sites, and RV awnings and window covers make a real difference in summer heat.
