Camping near Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico
Ruidoso Downs sits along US Highway 70 in Lincoln County, at the eastern edge of the Sacramento Mountains and next door to the Village of Ruidoso. The area is set in the scenic Sacramento Mountains of southern New Mexico and is home to the World's Richest Quarter Horse Race, the All American Futurity. RV renters use the town as a base for the racetrack, casino, and the surrounding Lincoln National Forest.
Private RV parks cluster along US-70 and Sudderth Drive, giving renters a mix of full-hookup pull-throughs and quieter riverside sites. Slow Play RV Park, Pine Ridge RV Campground, Riverside RV Park, Silver Leaf RV Park, and Arrowhead Motel and RV Park are all within a short drive of the racetrack and Midtown Ruidoso.
Lincoln National Forest, just minutes from the heart of Ruidoso, spans more than a million acres of pine-covered mountains, shared-use trails, and open views, making the region a practical base for renters who want hookups at night and forest access by day.
Things to do near Ruidoso Downs
The Ruidoso Downs Race Track and Billy the Kid Casino are the town's headline draws, though renters should confirm the current racing venue before booking. For the 2026 season, live horse racing traditionally held at Ruidoso Downs will take place at The Downs Racetrack and Casino in Albuquerque, while Ruidoso Downs remains home to important equine events, the Billy the Kid Casino, and the historic horse sales pavilion.
Outdoors, Lincoln National Forest offers hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and scenic drives from trailheads only minutes from town. Ski Apache is a popular destination for winter sports, the Smokey Bear Historical Park and Museum in Capitan covers local history, and the Valley of Fires Recreation Area near Carrizozo features striking lava-flow terrain. Historic Lincoln, tied to Billy the Kid, is a short drive east.

Elevation drives the season here. Weather conditions vary significantly with elevation in the Sacramento Mountains, and summer temperatures stay cooler at higher elevations while lower areas can see considerable heat. Summer is peak season, with racing traditionally running from late spring through Labor Day and drawing crowds to town and nearby campgrounds. Private RV parks in Ruidoso Downs generally stay open year-round, but reservations tighten sharply on race weekends and around the All American Futurity in early September.
Forest campgrounds run a shorter calendar. Many campgrounds in the Lincoln National Forest have RV sites open from May to October, none of which have hookups of any kind. Fall brings cooler nights and lighter crowds, and October color in the higher elevations is a draw.
Wildfire and post-burn flooding have affected the area in recent years. Management of Ruidoso Downs Race Track announced that the entire 2026 live racing season will be held at the Downs of Albuquerque, citing damage from catastrophic flooding. Check current fire restrictions and road status with the Smokey Bear Ranger District before departing.
How to book campgrounds near Ruidoso Downs
Private RV parks in and around Ruidoso Downs, including Slow Play RV Park, Pine Ridge RV Campground, Riverside RV Park, Silver Leaf RV Park, and Arrowhead Motel and RV Park, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. For summer race weekends and the Labor Day stretch, book well in advance; longer big-rig pull-throughs fill first.
For forest camping, developed Lincoln National Forest sites are reserved through Recreation.gov, while several first-come, first-served sites remain available. No electricity is available at any Lincoln National Forest Campground, so plan to run on battery or generator. Dispersed camping options are located in and around the Village of Ruidoso, and no electricity is available at any Lincoln National Forest Campground, subject to current fire restrictions.
What to expect on the ground
Ruidoso Downs sits at roughly 6,400 feet, so nights run cool even in summer and RV furnaces get used in shoulder seasons. Grades on US-70 and side roads into the forest are manageable for most rentals, but tight turns and low branches on smaller forest roads can be a factor for larger Class A rigs.
Private parks along the highway corridor generally offer full hookups, Wi-Fi of varying quality, and level gravel sites. Riverside and creek-adjacent parks trade highway noise for shade and water access. There are bears on the National Forest, so camp accordingly: store food inside the RV, secure trash, and keep the picnic table clear overnight.
Cell coverage is reliable in town and spotty once inside the forest. Fuel and groceries are easiest in Ruidoso proper, a few minutes west on US-70.
