Campgrounds and RV parks near Tularosa, NM

White Sands National Park is the anchor attraction, about 25 miles west. Visitors sled the gypsum dunes, drive the 8-mile Dunes Drive, which is half paved and half packed gypsum sand, and hike marked trails such as Alkali Flat and the Interdune Boardwalk. Waxed plastic snow saucers can be purchased at the park's gift shop. Alamogordo offers the New Mexico Museum of Space History and the Toy Train Depot. East of Tularosa, the Sacramento Mountains climb quickly to Cloudcroft, where cooler temperatures, pine forest, and Lincoln National Forest trails contrast sharply with the basin floor. Day trips include Three Rivers Petroglyph Site to the north, the pistachio orchards along US-54, and the village's historic adobe district. US Highway 70 between White Sands National Park and Las Cruces may also be closed during military testing; for closure information, call White Sands Missile Range at 575-678-1178.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel in the Tularosa Basin. Daytime highs are warm without being extreme, and nights cool off enough for good sleeping. Spring brings strong winds and blowing dust across the basin, which can affect awnings, slide-outs, and driving on US-70. Summer is hot, with basin highs frequently reaching the upper 80s and low 90s. Rainfall is scarce throughout the year, with most of it occurring during the summer monsoon season between late June and early September. These afternoon storms can be brief but heavy, with lightning and flash-flood risk in arroyos and low crossings. Dunes Drive at White Sands may be closed for periods of up to three hours during military tests. Winter is mild by North American standards, with sunny days and freezing nights. Tularosa averages about 2 inches of snow per year, though snow is regular in the Sacramento Mountains above Cloudcroft. Most private RV parks in Tularosa and Alamogordo operate year round, and Oliver Lee Memorial State Park is open year round.

Expect a high-desert setting with intense sun, low humidity, and dramatic temperature swings between day and night. Sites at private parks in the Tularosa and Alamogordo corridor are generally level and offer full hookups, with pull-throughs common. Shade is limited, so awnings and window coverings help in summer. Cell coverage from major carriers is reliable in the village and along US-54 and US-70. It weakens quickly in the Sacramento Mountains and inside White Sands National Park. Amenities are limited at White Sands National Park; the closest amenities are in Alamogordo, about 15 miles away, where grocery, fuel, and propane are readily available. Holding-tank services and fresh water are available at private parks in the corridor. Fire restrictions are common from late spring through the monsoon onset, and open fires may be prohibited during high fire-danger periods.
