Camping near Wells, NY
Wells is a small hamlet in Hamilton County along Route 30, set on Lake Algonquin in the southern Adirondack Park. The location puts RV travelers within easy reach of the Sacandaga River corridor, Silver Lake Wilderness trailheads, and the larger Great Sacandaga Lake to the south. It is a practical base for families who want quiet, forested camping without the traffic of the High Peaks region.
Private campgrounds around Wells cater specifically to RV travelers. Pine Lake Campground and RV Park and Southern Adirondack Pines Campground and Cabins sit closest to town and offer hookup options. A short drive south toward Gloversville brings travelers to Pecks Lake Enterprises and Watersedge Campground, both on quieter lakes suited to swimming and fishing. Glampful offers a smaller, more curated experience for visitors who want fewer neighbors.
The surrounding land is a mix of state Forest Preserve and private lakefront, so expect a blend of rustic public sites and full-service private parks within a short drive.
Things to do around Wells
Paddling, fishing, and swimming dominate the summer schedule. Lake Algonquin sits right in the hamlet and is well suited to kayaks and canoes launched from the town beach. The Sacandaga River offers flatwater sections for beginners and mild whitewater for experienced paddlers upstream.
Hikers have access to the Silver Lake Wilderness, including trails to Auger Falls and the T-Lake Falls area. Families often combine a morning hike with an afternoon at a lake beach. Great Sacandaga Lake, a short drive south, adds motorboating, water skiing, and larger public launches.
Rainy days pull visitors toward the Adirondack Experience museum in Blue Mountain Lake, the shops of Speculator and Northville, and the southern terminus of the Northville-Placid Trail at Waterfront Park in Northville for a short walk.

The prime RV season in Wells runs from late May through mid-October. Most private campgrounds open around Memorial Day weekend and close in mid to late October when overnight temperatures drop below freezing. July and August bring the warmest weather, the busiest weekends, and the fullest campgrounds, so booking well ahead is important for holiday periods.
Early summer, from mid-June through early July, is the black fly and mosquito peak in the Adirondacks. Repellent, screen rooms, and long sleeves are worth packing. Late summer typically brings drier bug conditions and easier evenings outside.
Fall foliage runs from late September through the second week of October, with peak color usually in the first week of October in this part of the southern Adirondacks. Sites fill quickly on foliage weekends. Winter camping is limited, since most facilities winterize water lines by late October and reopen in spring.
How to book a site
Private campgrounds around Wells, including Pine Lake Campground and RV Park, Southern Adirondack Pines Campground and Cabins, Pecks Lake Enterprises, Glampful, and Watersedge Campground, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For July and August weekends, six to eight weeks of lead time is realistic, and foliage weekends in early October often book earlier.
New York State operates public campgrounds within the Adirondack Park through the ReserveAmerica system for NYSDEC facilities. Reservations open on a rolling nine-month window, and popular waterfront sites go quickly the moment they release. For last-minute trips, midweek arrivals are usually easier to secure than weekends.
What to expect on site
Expect wooded, shaded sites with gravel or grass pads. Most private parks near Wells offer 30 amp service, and some have 50 amp on a portion of their sites, so confirm hookup type when booking a larger Class A or fifth wheel. Full sewer hookups are less common than water and electric, but dump stations are standard.
Cell service is inconsistent throughout the southern Adirondacks. Coverage varies by carrier and can be spotty away from Route 30. Some campgrounds offer Wi-Fi near the office, though bandwidth is limited.
Bears are present in the region. Store food inside the RV overnight, keep coolers out of truck beds, and use campground dumpsters rather than leaving trash at the site. Firewood must be sourced locally to comply with New York State pest rules.

After that, refunds depend on how far out you are from your trip start date. You will see the exact terms during checkout and in your booking confirmation, so nothing is hidden. If a host cancels, guests receive a refund or travel credit. Pro tip: book early to lock in summer dates at popular Wells campgrounds, then keep an eye on the forecast as your trip approaches, and RVezy support is available if anything unexpected comes up.

Wilcox Lake Wild Forest just east of Wells offers quieter trails where pups can sniff to their heart's content. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet details, and pack a tie-out and water bowl for riverside lounging beside the Sacandaga River.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/camping/petsCan the RV be delivered directly to my campsite in Wells?
Yes, RV delivery Wells NY is one of the most popular options for first-timers, and it removes nearly every worry about towing or driving a big rig. Many RVezy hosts will deliver your motorhome or travel trailer straight to Sacandaga Campground, Lake Pleasant Marine, or a private property in the Wells area, then level it, hook up power and water where available, and walk you through every system. Delivery fees usually scale with distance from the host's location, often $2 to $5 per mile round trip. Filter listings by 'Delivery' to see available options. Pro tip: confirm the campsite number with Sacandaga's ranger station before arrival so your host can pull right in without a hitch.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/sacandaga-campground/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NY&parkId=716How many miles can I drive on my Wells, NY RV rental?

From Wells, Lake George is about 45 miles east, Lake Placid sits roughly 110 miles north, Saratoga Springs is about 55 miles south, and Old Forge is around 75 miles northwest, so a typical 4-night loop fits comfortably in standard mileage packages. Extra miles usually cost around $0.30 to $0.50 each if you go over. Pro tip: map your route before booking and message the host if you are planning a bigger road trip from Wells, as many will bump up the mileage allowance for longer stays.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wells,%20New%20YorkWhere are the best campgrounds near Wells, NY?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Wells NY. Sacandaga Campground (143 sites on the Sacandaga River, dump station, hot showers, no hookups) is the iconic local pick just off Route 30. Northampton Beach Campground on Great Sacandaga Lake (about 25 miles south) offers a sandy swim beach and 224 sites. Moffitt Beach Campground near Speculator (15 miles north) has a long lake beach and is great for families. Lewey Lake Campground (about 30 miles north) sits at the foot of Snowy Mountain for serious hikers. Pro tip: New York State DEC campgrounds book through ReserveAmerica up to 9 months in advance, and prime July and August weekends fill within minutes of the booking window opening.
dec.ny.gov/places/sacandaga-campground-and-day-use-areaWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Wells, NY?
Late May through early October is prime time for RV rental in Wells, NY, with each window offering something different. Summer (late June to August) brings 75 to 82°F days perfect for swimming in the Sacandaga River, while September and early October deliver world-class Adirondack fall foliage with crisp 55 to 65°F afternoons. Sacandaga Campground is typically open May through Columbus Day, mirroring most DEC campgrounds. Spring is quieter but black-fly season runs roughly mid-May to mid-June, so pack repellent. Winters are cold (often single digits) and most public campgrounds close. Pro tip: book the last weekend of September for peak foliage along Route 30, then drive 10 miles north to Auger Falls for the most photogenic stop of your trip.
weather.gov/aly/I've never driven an RV before. Is Wells, NY a good place for first-timers?
Wells is actually one of the friendliest spots in New York for first time renting an RV. Route 30 through Wells is a wide, well-maintained two-lane state highway with gentle grades and minimal city traffic, so you'll feel comfortable quickly. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup that covers leveling, propane, water, generator, and dumping, and they're a text away during your trip. If you're still nervous, choose a smaller campervan or Class C, or book delivery so the host handles all the driving and setup. Pro tip: do your first grocery run at Hamilton Mercantile in Wells before heading to Sacandaga Campground, so you can practice parking in a low-stress lot before settling in for the night.
dot.ny.gov/main/travelWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical breakdowns anywhere your Wells NY RV trip takes you, from Speculator to Lake Placid. Cell coverage along Route 30 in Wells is decent on most major carriers, and you can reach RVezy support directly through the app or by phone. Your host is also a great first call for quick questions, since they know their RV best. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN, plate, and propane tank info before you leave the host's driveway so roadside dispatch can help you faster if you do need them.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip routes from Wells, NY?
An RV road trip from Wells opens up some of the Northeast's most stunning scenery. Head north on Route 30 about 75 miles to Blue Mountain Lake and the Adirondack Experience museum, or continue 110 miles to Lake Placid for Olympic history and High Peaks views. Loop east 45 miles to Lake George for boat cruises and family fun, or south 55 miles to Saratoga Springs for racing, mineral springs, and gourmet dining. For a bigger adventure, the Vermont border is roughly 90 miles east via Glens Falls. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval and proper documentation; travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: time the Saratoga run for late July through Labor Day track season for unforgettable energy.
dot.ny.gov/main/travelHow much should I budget for fuel on a Wells, NY RV trip?
Fuel is very manageable on a Wells RV trip because distances between Adirondack attractions are short. Class B campervans get around 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A rigs sit around 6 to 10 MPG. Pulling a travel trailer with your own truck typically returns 10 to 14 MPG. Regular unleaded in the Wells and Speculator area generally tracks slightly above the New York state average, so it's smart to fill up in Northville or Amsterdam before heading deep into Hamilton County, where stations are sparse. A typical 4-day, 300-mile loop in a Class C costs roughly $120 to $180 in fuel. Pro tip: the Stewart's Shops in Northville and Speculator are reliable last-fuel stops.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Wells, NY?
For summer weekends, book as early as you can. New York State DEC campgrounds, including Sacandaga, Moffitt Beach, Northampton Beach, and Lewey Lake, open reservations through ReserveAmerica up to 9 months in advance, and Friday/Saturday nights in July and August often sell out within minutes of release. For midweek or shoulder-season stays in May, June, September, or early October you can often book just a week or two ahead. Same-day reservations are allowed at DEC campgrounds until 5 p.m. on the day of arrival, but walk-ins are not permitted. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly 9 months before your target Saturday night, log in 5 minutes early, and have site numbers picked from the campground map ready to go.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/sacandaga-campground/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NY&parkId=716What are driving conditions like around Wells, NY?
Driving in Wells is refreshingly mellow compared to most of New York. Route 30, the main north-south corridor, is a paved two-lane highway with light traffic, broad shoulders, and clearly marked pull-offs for the scenic Sacandaga River views. Expect gentle climbs, a few moderate curves around Lake Pleasant, and the occasional deer or moose at dawn and dusk, so keep your speed in check at those hours. Watch for cyclists in summer and slow-moving leaf-peeper traffic in late September. Winter brings real snow and ice, and many side roads aren't ideal for big rigs from November to April. Pro tip: download offline Google Maps for the Wells area before you leave Amsterdam, since cell signal can drop in pockets between Northville and Speculator.
511ny.org/What amenities do campgrounds near Wells, NY offer?
Most campgrounds near Wells offer the essentials you need for a comfortable RV camping Wells NY trip, though full hookups are rare in this part of the Adirondacks. Sacandaga Campground has 143 sites with picnic tables, fire rings, hot showers, flush toilets, a trailer dump station, and potable water spigots throughout the loops, but no electric or water hookups at sites. Northampton Beach and Moffitt Beach are similar, with dump stations and beach access. For full hookups, check private parks like Lake George Escape or Adirondack Gateway RV Park near Gloversville. Pro tip: confirm your rental has a generator if you plan to stay at Sacandaga—generator hours are limited to 9 to 11 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m., so plan AC and charging around that window.
dec.ny.gov/places/sacandaga-campground-and-day-use-areaWhat's included inside a typical Wells, NY RV rental?
Wells RV rentals come stocked for comfort straight out of the host's driveway. Expect a real bed (often a queen plus convertible dinette and bunks), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control via furnace and roof AC, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many motorhome rentals in Wells also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, camp chairs, and a propane grill. Wi-Fi and onboard generators vary by listing, so check the amenities section or message the host before booking. Pro tip: ask about local add-ons, since many Adirondack hosts offer kayaks, paddleboards, or bikes as extras, perfect for launching right into the Sacandaga River from your campsite.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wells,%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in the Wells area offer a smart range of add-ons to customize your trip. Common extras include bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, generators, propane refills, kayaks and paddleboards, bike racks, fire pits, and pet cleaning fees. Pickup is usually at the host's home or a nearby meeting point in Wells, Northville, or Speculator, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough covering every system. Mileage policies vary by listing but most include 100 to 150 free miles per night. Delivery to Sacandaga Campground is a popular add-on. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a generator into one booking and you can show up at your campsite with nothing but a cooler and your hiking boots.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wells,%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and fully handled through the RVezy platform, so you never hand cash or card info to the host directly. When you book, you pay the rental total securely online. A separate refundable security deposit is also placed on your card before pickup, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV, and it is released back to you after the trip assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. Pro tip: walk the RV with your host at both pickup and drop-off, take time-stamped photos of the exterior, interior, and odometer, and send them through the RVezy message thread. This simple step protects you and almost always ensures a quick, full deposit return.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I dump waste and fill fresh water near Wells, NY?
You've got solid options for tank service around Wells. Sacandaga Campground has a free trailer dump station for registered campers, with potable water available at spigots throughout the loops. Northampton Beach Campground (about 25 miles south) and Moffitt Beach Campground (15 miles north) also offer dump stations for guests. For non-campers, the Mountain Market in Speculator and several private RV parks toward Gloversville offer dump services for a small fee ($10 to $20). Always rinse your sewer hose at the dedicated rinse spigot, never the potable water tap. Pro tip: dump on the morning of departure rather than at arrival—Sacandaga's dump station can back up on Sunday checkouts between 9 and 11 a.m., so going earlier saves you 20 minutes of waiting.
