Camping near Andrews, North Carolina
Andrews sits in the Valley River valley of far western North Carolina, surrounded on three sides by the Nantahala National Forest, which offers hiking trails, fishing spots, and picnic areas near several developed tent and RV sites. The town works as a practical base for the Nantahala Gorge, Fontana Lake, and the Cherohala Skyway, with US-19/74 giving straightforward RV access from Asheville and Atlanta.
Options close to town skew toward small, family-run parks along creeks and the Valley and Nantahala rivers. Nelsons Nantahala Hideaway and Brookside Campground and Rafting sit within a short drive of the river corridor, while Peachtree Cove RV Park in nearby Marble and Walnut Hollow RV Ranch offer full-hookup sites suited to larger rigs. The Murphy / Peace Valley KOA Holiday adds a more amenity-heavy option about twenty minutes west.
For renters wanting national-forest camping, the Nantahala Ranger District operates developed sites reachable from Andrews via Junaluska Road, including group facilities that require advance phone reservations.
Things to do around Andrews
The main draw is whitewater. Nantahala River rafting trips go out every day beginning in March and running through the end of October, with Class II-III water suitable for families and first-timers. Because the water is drawn from the bottom of Nantahala Lake, it stays cool year-round, so wetsuits or splash gear are useful even in July.
On land, the surrounding forest carries the Appalachian and Bartram trails, plus shorter loops near Appletree and Standing Indian. Fontana Lake and Hiwassee Lake offer swimming, kayaking, and trout and bass fishing.
Off-water diversions include the Cherohala Skyway drive, Harrah's Cherokee Valley River Casino in Murphy, and the L&N Depot farmers market in downtown Murphy on Saturdays through the warm months.

Late spring through early fall is the core RV season. May and June bring reliable warm days and blooming rhododendron, and commercial Nantahala rafting is already running daily by then. July and August are the busiest weeks: expect full parks on weekends, especially around rafting outfitters, and book several weeks ahead.
September and October are widely considered the best window. Crowds thin after Labor Day, humidity drops, and hardwood color usually peaks in the higher elevations by mid to late October. Commercial rafting continues into late October before trips wind down.
Winter camping is possible but limited. National-forest campgrounds in the district generally close for the cold months: for example, Appletree Group Campground operates April 1 through October 31. Private RV parks along the valley tend to stay open year-round, though snow and freezing nights do occur and some water hookups may be shut off during cold snaps.
How to book a site near Andrews
Private parks near Andrews take reservations directly by phone or through their websites and third-party listings. For summer weekends and October foliage, booking four to eight weeks out is a safe target; holiday weekends fill earlier.
National-forest sites in the Nantahala Ranger District use a mix of first-come-first-served and reservation systems. Group facilities require advance booking: Appletree Group Campground is most popular during summer weekends and quieter on weekdays, and reservations are required by phone through the Nantahala Ranger District. Reservable individual sites in the wider forest are handled through Recreation.gov.
If a specific rig length or hookup type matters, call the park directly. Some valley parks have low utility lines or gravel access roads that limit larger motorhomes to certain sites.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain is mountain valley: sites tend to be along creeks or the river, shaded by hardwoods, with gravel pads. Cell service is workable in the town of Andrews and along US-19/74 but drops quickly on forest roads and in coves. Grocery runs are easiest in Murphy, which has full-size supermarkets and hardware stores within a short drive.
Roads into national-forest campgrounds off Junaluska Road are paved with curvy sections, and large fifth wheels and Class A motorhomes should scout routes in advance. Private parks along the highway corridor are far easier for big rigs.
Bears are active in the Nantahala. Store food inside the RV or in hard-sided containers, keep grills clean, and follow posted fire restrictions, which tighten during dry spells in late summer and fall.
