Camping near Avery Creek, North Carolina
Avery Creek is an unincorporated community in Buncombe County, North Carolina, sitting just south of Asheville along the eastern edge of the Pisgah Ranger District of Pisgah National Forest. The location puts RV travelers within a short drive of the Blue Ridge Parkway, the French Broad River corridor, and downtown Asheville, while keeping forest trailheads and waterfalls close at hand.
Private RV parks cluster along the I-26 and NC-280 corridors between Avery Creek, Arden, and Mills River. Rutledge Lake RV Resort and Oak Fern RV Park sit closest to town, with Asheville Bear Creek RV Park, Wilson's Riverfront RV Park, and Maddox Meadows RV Park filling in options along the river and toward Mills River. Most parks in this belt handle Class A rigs and travel trailers and offer full hookups.
Public camping in the surrounding national forest is more rustic. Pisgah Ranger District campgrounds like Davidson River and North Mills River accommodate RVs but generally lack individual hookups, so travelers using them typically dry camp and use the on-site dump station and potable water.
Things to do near Avery Creek
The Pisgah Ranger District is the main draw. Sliding Rock, Looking Glass Falls, and the Cradle of Forestry sit along US-276, and the Art Loeb and Mountains-to-Sea trails cross the district. The Davidson River offers trout fishing and tubing, and mountain bikers use trails around Bent Creek Experimental Forest and DuPont State Recreational Forest.
The Blue Ridge Parkway climbs east of Avery Creek, with overlooks at Mount Pisgah and access to Graveyard Fields. Downtown Asheville, the North Carolina Arboretum, and the Biltmore Estate are all reachable within 20 to 30 minutes by vehicle.
Families traveling with kids often combine a waterfall day in Pisgah with a river float on the French Broad and an evening in West Asheville or Biltmore Village.

Asheville's NOAA 1991-2020 normals give an annual mean near 57°F, with July the warmest month and January the coldest. That mild profile extends to Avery Creek, though elevations along the Blue Ridge Parkway run cooler and wetter than the valley floor.
Spring brings wildflower blooms in Pisgah and reliable waterfall flow, but afternoons can be showery. Summer is peak season: Sliding Rock is staffed, campgrounds fill on weekends, and thunderstorms build over the ridges most afternoons. Fall foliage typically peaks in mid to late October along the parkway and a week or two later at lower elevations, and this is the busiest booking window of the year.
Asheville averages roughly 41 inches of rain and 12 inches of snow per year. Winter camping is possible at lower-elevation private parks, but Davidson River closes for construction in the deep winter months in some years, and higher sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway close during ice and snow events.

How to book campgrounds near Avery Creek
Federal campgrounds in Pisgah National Forest, including Davidson River and North Mills River, are reserved through Recreation.gov. A booking window of up to six months ahead applies, and popular summer and October weekends sell out as soon as the window opens. Davidson River requires reservations during its main season from late March through mid-November, with first-come, first-served sites in the shoulder months.
North Carolina state parks such as Gorges State Park use the state's own reservation portal, and DuPont State Recreational Forest does not offer developed campgrounds.
Private parks including Rutledge Lake RV Resort, Oak Fern RV Park, Asheville Bear Creek RV Park, Wilson's Riverfront RV Park, and Maddox Meadows RV Park take direct bookings by phone or website. For leaf season and holiday weekends, reserve several months out. Confirm rig-length limits, big-rig access, and pet policies before arrival.
What to expect on the ground
The terrain around Avery Creek is mountainous, with winding two-lane roads once travelers leave I-26 or NC-280. Larger rigs should plan routes carefully, especially on US-276 through Pisgah, where grades are steep and low clearances exist at some bridges. GPS routing occasionally suggests forest roads that are not suitable for RVs.
Private parks in the area range from full-service resort-style properties to smaller riverfront layouts. Cell coverage is generally good in the valley and spotty in the national forest. Bear activity is common: use provided food storage and keep grills and coolers secured.
Summer afternoons run humid with thunderstorm risk, so plan outdoor activities for mornings. Water temperatures in the Davidson and French Broad rivers stay cool year round.
