Campgrounds near Balfour, North Carolina
Balfour is an unincorporated community in Henderson County, part of the Asheville metro area in western North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains. RV travelers use it as a base for the Hendersonville and Brevard area, with quick access to DuPont State Recreational Forest, Pisgah National Forest, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Elevation sits around 2,100 feet, which keeps summer nights cooler than the Piedmont and shoulder seasons long.
Local RV options cluster along the Hendersonville and Flat Rock corridor. Lazy Boy Travel Park and Apple Valley Travel Park sit closest to Balfour, with Jaymar Travel Park, Town Mountain Travel Park, and Oak Fern RV Park rounding out the private options nearby. These are small, hookup-oriented parks catering to travelers touring the mountains rather than destination resorts.
Public-land camping is a short drive away in the Pisgah Ranger District of Pisgah National Forest, which offers developed campgrounds along the Davidson River corridor west of Brevard.
Things to do near Balfour
DuPont State Recreational Forest is the headline attraction, with a network of trails leading to High Falls, Triple Falls, Hooker Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. Camping and open fires are prohibited inside the forest, and popular parking lots often fill early on summer mornings, so plan an early or late arrival.
In Pisgah National Forest, the Davidson River corridor offers trout fishing, tubing, and swimming, plus hiking to Looking Glass Falls and Sliding Rock. The 12.3-mile Art Loeb Trail and 3.7-mile North Slope Trail leave from the Davidson River area, and the Blue Ridge Parkway threads scenic overlooks north of town.
Downtown Hendersonville and Brevard add breweries, orchards, and family dining within a short drive.

Summer is the peak booking window. June through August is the busiest stretch at private parks and at Pisgah's Davidson River Campground, where reservations are required from late March through mid-November and demand runs high on weekends and holidays. Sites often book weeks ahead, so lock in early.
Spring brings wildflowers and full waterfalls but also a wet stretch of the year, with rain possible on many days. Fall is a strong shoulder season: cooler nights, lower crowds, and leaf color that draws day-trippers into DuPont and along the Parkway from mid-October.
Winters are cool rather than harsh, with occasional snow and ice at higher elevations. Davidson River Campground is closed for bathhouse renovations, with the anticipated reopening extended from July 1 to September 1, 2026, so check current status on Recreation.gov before routing through. Private RV parks in the Hendersonville area typically operate year-round but may reduce services in the coldest months.

How to book campgrounds near Balfour
Federal sites in Pisgah National Forest, including Davidson River, are booked through Recreation.gov. The reservation window opens on a rolling six-month calendar, and reservations are required from March 23 through November 15, with same-day walk-up only permitted in the off-season. Any unoccupied site on the first night can be released without refund.
North Carolina State Parks use a separate reservation system operated through ReserveAmerica, with cancellation fees and standard check-in and check-out windows at most state park campgrounds.
Private parks such as Lazy Boy Travel Park, Apple Valley Travel Park, Jaymar Travel Park, Town Mountain Travel Park, and Oak Fern RV Park handle bookings directly. Call ahead for big-rig length limits and hookup availability, especially in summer and during fall leaf season.
What to expect on the ground
Private RV parks in the Balfour and Hendersonville area tend to be small, family-run, and hookup-focused rather than resort-style, so expect basic laundry, dump access, and quiet evenings rather than pools and event schedules. Sites are often shaded and can be tight for larger Class A rigs; confirm length and slide clearance when booking.
At Davidson River in Pisgah, sites are mostly shaded with picnic tables, tent pads, lantern posts, and campfire rings with grills, plus hot showers and flush toilets in each loop. Cell service is limited and the area is active black bear territory, so all smellable items must be stored in a camper, vehicle, or provided bear box.
A potable water station and dump station sit near the campground entrance, though services can be seasonal at forest sites.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Balfour, NC
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Balfour, NC?
Great news for budget-conscious travelers: RV rental in Balfour, NC is one of the more affordable ways to explore the Blue Ridge Mountains. Travel trailers typically start around $90 to $130 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $150 to $250 per night, and luxury Class A rigs sit at the higher end. You can save by booking midweek, traveling in April or November (shoulder season), and choosing a towable if you already have a capable tow vehicle. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book to lock in competitive pricing before peak fall foliage demand hits Henderson County in October. Booking 8 to 12 weeks ahead almost always beats last-minute rates.
visithendersonvillenc.org/What license do I need to rent an RV in Balfour, NC?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Balfour, NC. North Carolina does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers, even larger Class A rigs. You'll just need to be at least 25 years old with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised how straightforward the requirements are, which makes a Balfour RV trip easy to plan even on short notice.
ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/driver-licenses/Pages/default.aspxIs RVezy's protection package included when I rent an RV in Balfour, NC?
Yes, and that's a big reason renters feel confident booking. Every motorhome rental in Balfour booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, automatically built into your reservation. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the vehicle during your trip, so you're not personally on the hook if something unexpected happens on a winding road near Pisgah National Forest. During checkout you choose your coverage level (Basic, Standard, or Premium), so you can pick the peace-of-mind tier that fits your trip. Combine that with a thorough host walkthrough at pickup and you've got a low-stress way to enjoy the Blue Ridge.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Balfour RV rental?
Plans change, and RVezy is built for that. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every booking (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book, so locking in your Balfour RV rental is low-risk. After that window, refund eligibility depends on how far out your trip is. If a host cancels on you, RVezy will help you secure a refund or travel credit. RVezy's support team is reachable before, during, and after your trip to walk you through options. Pro tip: book early to secure the best rigs, knowing you have flexibility built in from the start.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Balfour, NC?
Absolutely, your dog is welcome on the adventure. Many Balfour hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental options, and you can filter by Pet-Friendly on RVezy to see them instantly. Some hosts add a small cleaning fee or refundable pet deposit, which is shown upfront before you book. Once you're rolling, dogs love DuPont State Recreational Forest just 20 minutes south (leashed dogs allowed on most trails, including the famous Triple Falls), and Jackson Park right in Hendersonville has shaded walking loops. Lazy Boy Travel Park and Blue Ridge Travel Park both welcome leashed pets. Message the host directly through the listing if you have a large breed, just to confirm fit.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Balfour%2C%20North%20CarolinaCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Balfour?
Yes, and it's a game-changer for first-timers. RV delivery in Balfour, NC is offered by many local hosts, who will drive the rig to your campground, driveway, or vacation rental, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no towing stress, no backing into a tight site, and no figuring out the awning on your own. Popular delivery destinations include Lazy Boy Travel Park, Apple Valley Travel Park on Fruitland Road, and Davidson River Campground inside Pisgah National Forest. Filter by Delivery on RVezy, then message the host to confirm your exact address and any delivery fee, which is usually based on mileage from their location.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Balfour%2C%20North%20CarolinaHow far can I drive on a typical Balfour RV trip?
Plenty far, and most hosts make it easy. Many RV owners near Balfour include generous daily mileage allowances (often 100 to 150 miles per day) or even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage on certain listings, so you can range across western North Carolina without worrying. To put that in perspective: Asheville is just 25 miles north, Great Smoky Mountains National Park sits about 55 miles west, the Blue Ridge Parkway entrance at Mount Pisgah is roughly 30 miles away, and Charlotte is about 95 miles east. If you're planning a bigger loop, message the host before booking to ask about a mileage package add-on. It's almost always cheaper to pre-buy miles than pay overage after.
nps.gov/blri/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Balfour, NC?
You're spoiled for choice. Some of the best campgrounds near Balfour, NC include Lazy Boy Travel Park (year-round, full hookups, big-rig friendly, just a few minutes from downtown Hendersonville), Apple Valley Travel Park on Fruitland Road (93 sites with pull-throughs, open April to October in the heart of apple country), Blue Ridge Travel Park on Chimney Rock Road (open all year, close to Chimney Rock State Park), Town Mountain Travel Park (quiet, RV-only, year-round), and Lakewood RV Resort in Flat Rock (adults-only, pull-through sites). For something more rustic, head 20 minutes west to Davidson River Campground inside Pisgah National Forest, one of the most beloved RV camping Balfour-area options for trout fishing and waterfall access.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234469When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Balfour?
Honestly? Balfour is a four-season destination, so almost any time works. The sweet spot for most travelers is mid-September through late October, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 60s to low 70s and the Blue Ridge fall foliage peaks (mid-to-late October at this elevation, around 2,150 feet). Summer (June through August) brings warm 80s and access to every campground and waterfall, but expect afternoon thunderstorms. Spring delivers blooming rhododendron in May and June. Winter is quieter and cheaper, with January averages around 37 F, and many local RV parks like Lazy Boy and Town Mountain stay open year-round. Pro tip: book your fall-leaf trip by July, those weekends sell out fast.
weather.gov/gsp/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around Balfour?
You'll do great, especially because your host has your back. Every RVezy rental starts with a hands-on orientation where the owner walks you through driving, slide-outs, the generator, water systems, and dumping, so first time renting an RV won't feel like guesswork. Around Balfour, traffic is light, US-25 and I-26 are easy to navigate, and most local campgrounds have wide pull-through sites. If you're nervous about mountain roads like the Blue Ridge Parkway, ask your host for tips on grades and downshifting (most modern motorhomes have tow/haul mode). Even easier option: pick a travel trailer that the host delivers and sets up for you, so your only driving is the day-trip exploring.
ncdot.gov/initiatives-policies/safety/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RV rental in Balfour, NC booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, covering things like tire changes, lockouts, jump-starts, and towing. If something goes sideways on the Blue Ridge Parkway or out near Chimney Rock, one phone call gets a technician dispatched. Your host is also reachable by message or phone for quick questions (a tripped breaker, the awning won't retract, the water pump is acting up), and many local hosts can drive out to help in person if you're nearby. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before pickup so it's ready if you ever need it.
ncdot.gov/travel-maps/Pages/default.aspxWhat are the best road trip routes from Balfour, NC?
The location is unbeatable for a scenic RV road trip from Balfour. Top routes include the Blue Ridge Parkway south to Mount Pisgah and Graveyard Fields (30 to 45 miles of overlooks and waterfalls), a 55-mile drive west to Great Smoky Mountains National Park via Cherokee, a 90-mile run east to Charlotte for city days, and a 165-mile journey south to Atlanta. For a multi-day loop, head to Chimney Rock and Lake Lure (about 25 miles east) then continue to Asheville and back. You have Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia all within a day's drive. Confirm your route plan with the host so they can flag any mileage add-ons.
nps.gov/grsm/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Balfour RV trip?
Easier than you'd think with a little planning. Class B campervans and small travel trailers in the Balfour area typically get 15 to 20 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes run 8 to 12 MPG, and big Class A rigs come in around 6 to 10 MPG. North Carolina gas prices generally run a bit below the national average, with diesel and regular widely available along US-25, I-26, and US-64 in Hendersonville. For a typical 4-day, 300-mile loop through the Blue Ridge in a Class C, plan on roughly $120 to $180 in fuel. Pro tip: top off at the larger Hendersonville stations before heading up the parkway, where there are no gas stations along long stretches.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Balfour?
For peak summer and fall, book early and you'll thank yourself. North Carolina state park campgrounds (like Lake James and Gorges) and federal sites like Davidson River in Pisgah National Forest open reservations 6 months in advance through Recreation.gov, and fall weekends in October often sell out within hours. Private parks like Lazy Boy Travel Park, Apple Valley, and Blue Ridge Travel Park typically take reservations 3 to 6 months ahead and book up fast for apple festival weekends in early September. For shoulder-season midweek trips, you can often score a site 1 to 2 weeks out. Pro tip: if October weekends are full, try Sunday-through-Thursday stays, which are easier to grab and quieter.
recreation.gov/What are the driving conditions like around Balfour, NC?
Generally very manageable, with a few mountain-specific things to know. Roads around Balfour are well-maintained, and I-26 plus US-25 give you flat, easy access in and out of Henderson County. The Blue Ridge Parkway and US-276 toward Brevard involve curves and steady grades, so take it slow and use lower gears on long descents. Winter (December to February) can bring occasional ice or snow at higher elevations, and the Parkway closes sections during storms, so check NCDOT's DriveNC.gov before heading up. Summer afternoon thunderstorms can be intense but brief. Watch for low-clearance bridges in older downtown Hendersonville; stick to main routes in anything over 11 feet tall and you'll be fine.
drivenc.gov/What amenities do campgrounds near Balfour offer?
Most local campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Full hookups (water, electric 30/50 amp, sewer) are standard at Lazy Boy Travel Park, Apple Valley Travel Park, Blue Ridge Travel Park, and Lakewood RV Resort. Many also offer Wi-Fi, laundry, bathhouses, and dump stations if you're staying somewhere without sewer hookups. For potable water fill-ups and dumping on the road, the Pilot Travel Center off I-26 at Exit 49 (Upward Road) is a reliable stop. Davidson River Campground in Pisgah National Forest is more rustic (no hookups, but a dump station and water fill on-site). Pro tip: confirm your rig's amp service with the campground when booking; older parks sometimes only offer 30-amp.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/nfsnc/recarea/?recid=48114What's included inside a typical RV rental in Balfour?
More than you'd expect, which makes packing easy. Most RV rentals in Balfour come fully stocked with a real kitchen (stove, fridge, microwave, cookware, dishes, utensils), a bathroom with shower and toilet, comfortable beds that sleep anywhere from 2 to 10 depending on size, dinette seating, air conditioning, and a furnace for cool mountain nights. Many hosts also include bedding, towels, outdoor chairs, a leveling kit, and sewer hose. TVs, Bluetooth stereos, and onboard generators are common in Class C and Class A units. Wi-Fi varies, so plan to use your phone hotspot in the mountains where cell coverage can be spotty. Each listing's amenity checklist shows exactly what's included before you book.
fcc.gov/general/cell-phone-coverage-informationWhat add-ons can I get with my campervan rental Balfour booking?
Lots of useful ones, and they make life easier. Common add-ons for a campervan rental Balfour or motorhome booking include bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits, outdoor chairs and tables, portable BBQs ($25 to $50 per trip), generators (often included or $15 to $30 per day), bike racks, extra mileage packages, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Pickup is usually at the host's home or storage lot in the Hendersonville area, and dropoff is at the same location unless you've arranged delivery. Mileage policies vary by listing (some unlimited, others 100 to 150 miles per day), and everything is shown clearly on the listing page. Pro tip: bundle the bedding and BBQ add-ons so you can roll straight to your campsite and start grilling.
visitnc.com/things-to-do/outdoorsHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Balfour, NC on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host. A refundable security deposit (set by each host, often $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig's value) is placed as a hold on your card before pickup and released back to you typically within a few days of a clean return, assuming no damage or extra mileage charges. To avoid any deposit issues, do a thorough walk-around photo check with your host at pickup and dropoff, return the rig with the fuel and propane levels you received, and empty the tanks if your agreement requires. That's it: easy in, easy out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre there RVs available for winter trips around Balfour?
Yes, winter is a quietly amazing time to rent an RV in Balfour. Several local hosts list cold-weather-ready rigs with insulated holding tanks, heated underbellies, propane furnaces, and electric heat strips, perfect for the area's chilly but mild winters (January averages around 37 F with occasional snow). Year-round campgrounds like Lazy Boy Travel Park, Town Mountain Travel Park, and Blue Ridge Travel Park keep full hookups available, and shore power lets you run heaters comfortably. Plan a winter trip around Biltmore Estate's holiday lights in Asheville (just 25 miles north), or chase snow at higher elevations along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Message the host to confirm winterization status and any cold-weather-specific instructions before pickup, and you're set for a cozy escape.
