Camping near Belhaven, North Carolina
Belhaven sits on Pantego Creek where it meets the Pungo River, along the Intracoastal Waterway in Beaufort County. The town is a working waterfront community on North Carolina's Inner Banks, surrounded by national wildlife refuges, state game lands, and estuarine wetlands. RV travelers use it as a base for fishing, paddling, waterfowl hunting, and reaching the Ocracoke ferry at Swan Quarter, roughly 21 miles east.
Campground options in the area lean rural and water-focused rather than resort-style. Rose Bay Preserve offers full-hookup RV sites near a public boat ramp in Scranton, east of town off Highway 264. Pettigrew State Park, about an hour north on Lake Phelps, normally provides tent and small-trailer sites in a state park setting, though the campground is closed for renovations. Cotton Patch Landing in Chocowinity sits on Blount's Creek off the Pamlico River, with full-hookup sites, cabins, and a marina.
Natures Trace and River's Edge Family Campground round out the local options, giving RV travelers a mix of private and public choices within an hour of Belhaven.
Things to do around Belhaven
Fishing drives most trips. The Pungo River holds speckled trout, southern flounder, red drum, striped bass, and Spanish mackerel, with public ramps at Wright's Creek, Rose Bay, and downtown Belhaven providing free access to the Pungo, Pamlico Sound, and their tributaries. Blue crab is common in the creeks and can be caught from public piers, including the Bell Island Pier at Swan Quarter National Wildlife Refuge.
Paddlers can launch into protected wetlands on Pantego Creek and Upper Dowry Creek. Goose Creek State Park, west of town, offers hiking trails through cypress swamps and pine forest, plus paddling access on Goose Creek.
Wildlife viewing is strong year-round, with bottlenose dolphins in the Pungo, tundra swans wintering on Lake Phelps at Pettigrew State Park, and black bear, deer, and waterfowl on nearby refuge lands.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV camping. March through May brings mild days, blooming wetlands, and active inshore fishing before summer humidity sets in. September through November offers cooler nights, lower bug pressure, and the start of waterfowl season on the surrounding refuges and game lands.
Summer is hot and humid, with frequent thunderstorms and August ranking as the wettest month of the year. Biting flies and mosquitoes are heavy near marsh edges, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November with peak activity in August and September. Coastal storms can force short-notice closures at low-lying campgrounds and refuge access points.
Winter is mild by North American standards, with daytime highs typically in the low 50s and temperatures rarely dropping below freezing for long. It is peak duck and swan season, drawing hunters to Rose Bay Preserve and the refuges around Lake Mattamuskeet. The Pettigrew State Park campground is closed for renovations, so confirm status with the park before planning a trip there.
How to book a campsite
Private campgrounds in the Belhaven area take reservations directly through their own websites, by phone, or through third-party platforms such as Campspot and Roverpass. Rose Bay Preserve and Cotton Patch Landing both handle bookings this way, and River's Edge Family Campground can be reached directly. For summer weekends and fall hunting season, secure a site several weeks ahead; long-term and monthly sites are common in this area and can limit short-stay availability.
Pettigrew State Park normally uses the North Carolina State Parks reservation system through ReserveAmerica, with sites bookable up to six months in advance and a two-night minimum on holiday weekends. The campground is currently closed for renovations, so check the park's status before booking.
Walk-up sites are not the norm in the region. Reserve online or call ahead, and confirm RV length limits, hookup type, and any pet or campfire rules at the time of booking.
What to expect on the ground
The landscape is flat, low, and water-dominated. Most private campgrounds sit near creeks or the Pungo and Pamlico Rivers, with gravel or grass pads, 30- and 50-amp electric, water, and sewer. Amenities vary widely: some sites offer boat ramps, marinas, cabins, and bait shops, while others are simple rural parks with limited on-site staff.
Cell coverage is uneven outside town and along refuge roads. Grocery, fuel, and hardware runs are easiest in Belhaven itself or in Washington to the west. Bring insect repellent from spring through fall, and expect strong afternoon winds on the open water even when mornings are calm.
Roads into the campgrounds are generally paved to the entrance with gravel interior loops. Larger rigs should confirm site length and turning room in advance, particularly at smaller waterfront parks where sites can be tight.
