Campgrounds and RV parks near Bryson City, NC

Deep Creek is the anchor activity for most visiting families. The creek supports tubing on a mile of accessible water, and a short loop trail leads past Tom Branch Falls, Indian Creek Falls, and Juney Whank Falls. Tube rentals are available at Deep Creek Tube Center and Campground and at Smokey Mountain Campground, both located along the road to the park entrance. Beyond Deep Creek, the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad runs scenic excursions from downtown Bryson City, and the Tuckasegee River offers flatwater paddling and fly fishing for trout. Nantahala National Forest lies just west, with the Nantahala Gorge providing whitewater rafting and Fontana Lake providing boating access. Inside the national park, popular day hikes from the Bryson City side include the Deep Creek loop, Noland Divide, and Clingmans Dome via the Forney Ridge Trail.

The Deep Creek area sits in the southeastern portion of the park and has a moderate climate, with mild winters and warm, humid summers. Spring brings wildflowers and cool nights, with the in-park campground typically opening for the season by early to mid-spring. Summer is the peak window for tubing and family camping, and because of its proximity to water, Deep Creek fills quickly during summer months. Fall is often the most comfortable window for RV travel. Foliage in the surrounding hardwood forest typically peaks from mid-October into early November, and the area is wet overall, with high annual precipitation spread fairly evenly through the year, though fall tends to be the driest season. Cool nights make full hookups less critical, and demand for park sites remains high on weekends. Winter is the quiet season. Many private campgrounds close or reduce operations between November and March, and Deep Creek Campground inside the park closes for the winter. Higher elevations inside the park can see snow and temporary road closures, so travelers should check park alerts before towing.

Inside the national park, Deep Creek Campground provides basic amenities. There are no showers or electric, water, or sewer hookups, but flush toilets and drinking water are available. Sites accept tent campers and RVs up to 26 feet long, and there is no dump station at the campground. Larger rigs should plan on staying at private campgrounds outside the park. Private campgrounds along the road to Deep Creek typically offer power, water, and sewer hookups, camp stores, and creek access. Because of the location at the edge of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, all firewood must be heat-treated, bundled, and certified by the United States Department of Agriculture or a state agency. Heat-treated wood is available for purchase on site at Deep Creek Tube Center and Campground. Cell service is inconsistent close to the park boundary, and grocery resupply is easiest in downtown Bryson City before heading up the Deep Creek road.
