The main draw is beach access. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States, stands just outside Buxton, and the surrounding seashore is popular with surfers, kiteboarders, and surfcasting anglers. From Cape Point Campground and Frisco Campground, campers reach the Atlantic after a short walk up and over the dunes. Permitted off-road vehicle ramps allow four-wheel-drive beach driving with a national seashore ORV permit. Hatteras Village, a short drive south of Frisco, is the departure point for the free vehicle ferry to Ocracoke Island, adding another day-trip option. Inland, the Buxton Woods maritime forest offers short hiking trails, and Pamlico Sound on the west side of the island is calmer water for paddleboards, kayaks, and beginner kiteboarding lessons.

The national seashore campgrounds run a defined season. Private campgrounds near Buxton and Frisco generally operate year-round or on a longer shoulder season. July and August bring the warmest ocean temperatures and the busiest crowds, along with high humidity and afternoon thunderstorms. Late spring and early fall are usually the most comfortable stretches for RV travel, with milder temperatures and lower mosquito pressure. Frisco offers the most tree cover of the seashore campgrounds, with dense vegetation creating more privacy than at other seashore sites, though the cover can attract more mosquitoes.
