Campgrounds near Porters Neck
Porters Neck is a residential community in northeastern New Hanover County, North Carolina, roughly ten miles north of downtown Wilmington and set between the Intracoastal Waterway and US 17. It works well as an RV base for the greater Wilmington area, with quick access to Wrightsville Beach to the south, Topsail Beach to the north, and Carolina Beach and Kure Beach across the Cape Fear peninsula.
Most RV camping is clustered in and around Wilmington rather than in Porters Neck itself. The Wilmington KOA Holiday sits closest, off Market Street on the north side of the city, while Snow's Cut RV Retreat is positioned near Carolina Beach along the Intracoastal Waterway. South Newport Campground, Lanier's Campground, and Oceans RV Resort round out the options within a reasonable drive.
Carolina Beach State Park sits in New Hanover County about 12 miles south of Wilmington and is the main public campground in the region, booking through the North Carolina State Parks reservation system.
Things to do near Porters Neck
The Intracoastal Waterway defines daily life here. Kayaking, paddleboarding, inshore fishing, and boating are the standard weekend activities, and Wrightsville Beach is roughly a twenty-minute drive for surfing, swimming, and beach walks. Topsail Beach and Carolina Beach are also within easy reach for day trips.
Inland attractions include the Battleship North Carolina, the Cape Fear Riverwalk in downtown Wilmington, Airlie Gardens, and the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher. Families with kids tend to combine a beach morning with an afternoon on the Carolina Beach Boardwalk, which has an arcade, seasonal amusement rides, and Britt's Donut Shop.
Carolina Beach State Park adds hiking on sandy trails through longleaf pine habitat, with the Venus flytrap, a unique carnivorous plant, growing in the wild along parts of the route.

Spring, roughly late March through May, is a strong window for RV trips. Daytime highs climb from the mid-60s into the low 80s, water temperatures are rising, and campgrounds have not yet hit peak occupancy. Wildflowers and azaleas peak in April, and Wilmington's Azalea Festival draws crowds that weekend.
Summer is high season. Beaches, boardwalks, and state park sites fill quickly, and reservations for holiday weekends like Memorial Day, July Fourth, and Labor Day should be locked in months ahead. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and Atlantic hurricane season officially runs June through November, with the highest storm risk from August through October.
Fall brings cooler evenings, lower humidity, and thinner crowds after Labor Day, making September through early November a favorite for RVers who want beach access without summer congestion. Winters are mild but damp, with freezing temperatures occurring regularly between mid-November and mid-March, though severe or long-lasting cold is very rare. Some private parks reduce hours or amenities in the off-season, while Carolina Beach State Park operates year-round.

How to book campgrounds near Porters Neck
Carolina Beach State Park sites are reserved through the North Carolina State Parks system at ncparks.gov. Reservations must be made 1 day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 6 months in advance. Full-hookup sites are limited and tend to disappear first, so booking at the six-month mark is realistic for summer and holiday weekends. Two-night minimum stays may be required on holiday weekends, including Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends.
Private parks like Wilmington KOA Holiday, Snow's Cut RV Retreat, South Newport Campground, Lanier's Campground, and Oceans RV Resort each use their own reservation portals, typically online or by phone. Cancellation windows vary, so review each park's policy at the time of booking, and expect weekend availability to tighten well before summer arrives.
What to expect on-site
Site setups vary widely across the area. Wilmington KOA Holiday offers pull-through and back-in RV sites with full hookups, cabin rentals, tent sites, a pool, and a bathhouse, and is open year-round. Snow's Cut RV Retreat is an RV-focused park with lots suited to a range of rig sizes, including pull-through options.
At Carolina Beach State Park, there are 69 campsites with no hookups, ten campsites with full hookups (water, electric and sewer), and electric hookups offer 50-amp, 30-amp, and 20-amp services. A bathhouse with hot showers and six camper cabins located in the family campground round out the facilities. Long driveways can accommodate RVs of all sizes, though sites are wooded and shaded.
Coastal considerations: expect mosquitoes and biting flies in warmer months, sandy soils, and a front gate that is closed and locked at posted closing times, with no exiting or entering after that time. Cell coverage across the Wilmington area is generally reliable.

Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Porters Neck, NC. North Carolina exempts recreational vehicles from commercial driver license (CDL) requirements, so your standard non-commercial license covers Class A, Class B, and Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, fifth wheels, and campervans booked on RVezy. You must be 25 or older to be an approved driver, and ID verification happens right inside the platform during checkout, usually in just a few minutes. Visiting from abroad? Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets a clear cancellation policy that applies to every reservation, including a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates without second-guessing. The exact refund window depends on how far out you cancel relative to your trip start date. Because the policy is set by RVezy and not by individual hosts, you get the same protection no matter which listing you pick. Pro tip: hurricane season runs June through November on the North Carolina coast, so booking earlier in the year or in spring gives you the smoothest planning experience and lets you watch the forecast with full confidence.

ncparks.gov/state-parks/carolina-beach-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Porters Neck?
Porters Neck is a year-round RV destination thanks to its mild coastal climate, but the sweet spot is mid-April through early June and again from mid-September through early November. Spring brings warm 70s daytime temperatures, blooming azaleas, and fewer mosquitoes; fall offers comfortable mid-50s to mid-70s temperatures, lower humidity, and uncrowded beaches. Summer (June through August) is peak beach season with highs in the upper 80s and warm Atlantic water, but expect crowds and afternoon thunderstorms. Winter is mild, often in the 50s, and great for hiking Carolina Beach State Park's Flytrap Trail without bugs. Pro tip: October is a local favorite, the ocean is often still swimmable, hurricane season is winding down, and campground rates often drop.

Local roads like US 17 and Market Street are flat, well-marked, and easy for first-timers. Pro tip: book a travel trailer that the host delivers and parks for you at Carolina Beach State Park, you'll get all the fun with none of the driving stress.

Your host is also a quick text away for vehicle-specific tips since they know their RV inside and out. RVezy's support team is reachable before, during, and after every trip too. Pro tip: snap photos of the RV's hookups during your walkthrough; it makes troubleshooting over the phone much faster if anything comes up later.

Yes, an RV road trip from Porters Neck is one of the best ways to explore the Southeast, and most hosts welcome interstate travel within the US. Popular routes include heading south on US 17 to Myrtle Beach (about 90 minutes), continuing to Charleston, SC (about 3.5 hours), or going north toward Virginia Beach (about 5 hours). Cross-border travel into Canada or Mexico is generally not covered by RVezy's US insurance, so plan your itinerary within the United States and confirm with the host before booking. Pro tip: confirm any mileage caps directly in the listing and ask about one-way trip options if you're flying home from another city.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat about fuel costs and MPG for a Porters Neck RV trip?
Easy to budget for: in eastern North Carolina, regular gas typically runs in the low to mid $3 per gallon range, among the more affordable rates in the Southeast. Class A motorhomes average 7 to 10 MPG, Class C around 10 to 14 MPG, campervans (Class B) hit 18 to 22 MPG, and a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer comes in near 10 to 12 MPG. For a typical 3-day, 200-mile loop hitting Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, and Topsail Island, plan roughly $80 to $150 in fuel for most rigs. Pro tip: fuel up at the larger truck-friendly stations on US 17 near Hampstead or Market Street in Wilmington before heading to the beaches, where stations are smaller and often pricier.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Porters Neck?
Book early to lock in the best spots. Carolina Beach State Park opens reservations 6 months in advance through the North Carolina State Parks reservation system, and prime summer weekends (Memorial Day through Labor Day) often sell out quickly after opening. Private parks like Wilmington KOA Journey and Lanier's Campground typically book up 2 to 3 months ahead for summer. For shoulder-season trips in April, May, October, or November, 3 to 4 weeks ahead is usually plenty. Pro tip: set a reminder for exactly 6 months before your desired date, the full-hookup sites at Carolina Beach State Park get snapped up first.

Driving in Porters Neck is refreshingly easy. The main routes (US 17, Market Street, and Military Cutoff Road) are flat, multi-lane, and built to handle big rigs heading to the beaches. Check your rig's height (typically 11 to 13 feet) before taking smaller backroads, and skip downtown Wilmington's narrow historic streets with anything over 25 feet, park at a campground and rideshare in instead. Summer afternoon thunderstorms can produce heavy rain, so plan driving earlier in the day. Hurricane season runs June through November but rarely affects day-to-day travel; check the National Weather Service Wilmington forecast before long drives. Pro tip: the I-140 bypass around Wilmington is a stress-free way to reach US 17 north.

Most coastal campgrounds have dump stations, and many charge non-guests a small fee to use them. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank before leaving the campground if you're heading to Freeman Park at Carolina Beach, where there are no hookups but you can fall asleep with the Atlantic Ocean just steps from your door.

Many include a generator for off-grid stays at Freeman Park, plus seatbelts for safe travel with the whole family. Campervan rentals in Porters Neck are smaller and perfect for couples, while Class C motorhomes are the family favorite. A security deposit is held (not charged) on your card before the trip, with the amount set by the host based on the RV's size and value, and it's released after drop-off once the host confirms everything is in good shape. To avoid any issues, take time-stamped photos of the interior, exterior, and odometer at pickup and drop-off, follow the mileage and generator policies in the listing, and return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels you started with. Pro tip: a quick walkthrough video at handoff protects both you and the host.

You have solid options for where to park an RV in Porters Neck. For full-service overnight stays, head to Carolina Beach State Park (about 20 miles south), Wilmington KOA Journey (about 15 miles southwest), or Lanier's Campground in Surf City (about 25 miles north). Freeman Park at Carolina Beach allows oceanfront vehicle camping by permit during the off-season window each year, an unforgettable experience. Overnight parking at retail lots or rest areas is generally not permitted in New Hanover County, so book a real site. Pro tip: ask your host if they allow driveway parking at their property the night before pickup, it's a great way to load up and start your road trip fresh in the morning.
