Campgrounds and RV parks near Elk Park, NC

The Roan Highlands are the headline attraction, a stretch of grassy balds above 5,000 feet that the Appalachian Trail traverses, with a common access point at Carvers Gap on the TN/NC border. Day hikers can reach open balds within an hour of trailhead parking, and backpackers can string together longer AT sections. Inside Roan Mountain State Park, visitors will find about 12 miles of hiking trails ranging from easy family walks to more strenuous climbs, more than three miles of mountain bike trails, and the Doe River, one of the more productive trout streams in the state. The park also has a swimming pool with a wading area for small children and lifeguards on duty in season. Drives to Linville Falls, Grandfather Mountain, and Blue Ridge Parkway overlooks fill out easy day trips from any of the nearby campgrounds.

Summer is the busiest window. The stretch from Memorial Day through Labor Day is the peak period at Roan Mountain, drawing visitors for the trails, cooler mountain air, and blooming wildflowers. Roan Mountain is known for extensive natural Catawba rhododendron gardens that typically peak in mid to late June, coinciding with the annual Rhododendron Festival, so book well ahead if a trip lines up with that week. Fall brings cooler nights, clear skies, and leaf color across the high elevations, which draws heavy weekend traffic through October. Reservations for state park sites and popular private parks fill fastest on Fridays and Saturdays. Winter is quiet at lower elevations but genuinely cold on the ridges, with snow, ice, and possible road closures on Hwy 143 and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Roan Mountain camp store is closed from November through April 15, and only one bathhouse near the lower loop stays open during the off-season. Some private parks in the area operate on reduced seasonal schedules, so confirm hookups and gate hours before booking a cold-weather trip.

Expect mountain terrain. Sites in the region are often sloped or gravel, so leveling blocks and wheel chocks are worth packing. Elevations in the Roan area push above 3,000 feet, so overnight temperatures run cooler than nearby valleys even in midsummer. At Roan Mountain State Park, RV sites are split between an upper and lower loop, each site has water and electric hookups, and there are no sewer connections at individual sites. A dump station is located at the campground check-in, and amenities include drinking water, flush toilets, hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi that can be slow or spotty. Cell service is limited, and a Verizon booster is available at check-in. Pets are allowed but must be leashed, owners are expected to clean up after them, and pets are not permitted in park buildings or on some trails. Private parks nearby generally offer full hookups; verify amp service and big-rig access when booking.
