Campgrounds and RV parks near Germanton, NC

Hanging Rock State Park anchors most itineraries. The park has more than 20 miles of trails leading to waterfalls, rock outcrops, and a mountain cave, plus a swim lake with boat rentals in season and paddling access on the Dan River. Several single-track trails are open to mountain biking, and a portion of the park is part of the Mountains-to-Sea State Trail. Pilot Mountain State Park centers on a quartzite knob rising more than 2,000 feet and visible for miles. Visitors hike to overlooks, watch climbers on the cliffs, or paddle the Yadkin River in the park's separate river section. Rock climbing and rappelling are allowed in designated areas with registration. The surrounding Yadkin Valley holds a growing cluster of wineries, and Mount Airy, the model for Mayberry, is a short drive north.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for camping in the Germanton area. March through May brings mild days, blooming wildflowers, and moderate crowds. Fall foliage typically peaks in mid to late October and pulls the year's heaviest weekend traffic to Hanging Rock and Pilot Mountain, so weekends fill early. Summer is warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common. The swim lake at Hanging Rock and shaded trails through hickory and oak canopy make it workable, but sites at both state parks book up on summer weekends and around major holidays, when a two-night minimum applies on Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends. Winter is the quiet season. Hanging Rock's family campground stays open year-round for advance reservations, though water spigots and showers are winterized from November through March. Pilot Mountain's family campground runs March 15 through November 30, with the canoe-in sites on the Yadkin River available year-round. Occasional snow and ice can close roads at Pilot Mountain, so check park alerts before arrival.

At Pilot Mountain, the family campground sits on the lower slopes among oaks and hickories. Sites have tent pads, picnic tables, and fire rings with grate grills, and some accommodate RVs, but there are no electric or water hookups and no dump station. Driveway lengths vary, so check site details before booking a longer rig. Two washhouses provide hot showers, and check-in is after 3 p.m. with strict gate hours. Hanging Rock's family campground has 73 sites across two loops, each with a fire ring and picnic table. Drinking water and modern restrooms with hot showers are available in season, but there are no hookups and no dump station. Cabins are also available for rent. Pets are allowed at both state parks on a leash, but not at swim areas or inside buildings. Private campgrounds in the area are generally pet-friendly as well.
