Campgrounds near Glenwood, North Carolina
Glenwood sits in McDowell County in the foothills of western North Carolina, just south of Marion and within short driving distance of the Blue Ridge Parkway, Pisgah National Forest, and Lake James. The area works well as an RV base: I-40 runs a few miles north, US 221 threads through Glenwood, and the terrain is rolling rather than the steep grades found deeper in the mountains.
Camping options range from resort-style parks to state park sites and rustic riverside camps. Spacious Skies Hidden Creek in Marion offers full hook-up sites with 30-amp and 50-amp service, while Thermal City Gold Mine provides riverside camping along the Second Broad River with fire rings and a bathhouse. Barefoot Landing Camping Resort and The Campground at Tom Johnson Camping Center serve big-rig travelers, and Riverbreeze Campground offers tent and RV sites near Marion with easy river access.
Nearby, Lake James State Park sits in Burke and McDowell counties 50 miles northeast of Asheville, with campsites at both the Catawba River and Paddy's Creek accesses, and some sites accessible only by paddling.
Things to do near Glenwood
Lake James is the anchor attraction. The 6,812-acre reservoir sits at the base of Linville Gorge and offers scenic vistas of the Appalachian Mountain range along with boating, swimming, and fishing. Trails include bike trails at Paddy's Creek, the kid-friendly Holly Discovery Trail, the historic Overmountain Victory Trail, and the Fonta Flora State Trail. Canoe, kayak and paddleboard rentals are available at the Paddy's Creek Area concession stand from May through September, and the Paddy's Creek Area has a 700-foot swimming beach with lifeguards on duty seasonally from May 1 through September 30.
Families with kids can pan for gold at Thermal City Gold Mine or try gem mining at Spacious Skies Hidden Creek. The Blue Ridge Parkway, Linville Falls, Linville Caverns, and Pisgah National Forest trails are all within an easy drive, and downtown Marion offers restaurants, breweries, and grocery resupply.

Late spring through early fall is the busiest window at area campgrounds. Reservations are advisable well in advance for weekend stays and during peak season, when waterfront sites fill quickly. Summer brings warm, humid days ideal for lake swimming and paddling, and the beach at Paddy's Creek is open for swimming from May through September.
Spring arrives with wildflowers and moderate temperatures, though rainfall is steady. Fall delivers strong leaf color across the Blue Ridge, cooler nights, and lighter crowds after Labor Day, making it a favorite for RV travelers who want the scenery without the summer heat.
Winter is quiet. Lake James State Park is open year-round, but closed on Christmas Day. Specific campground availability may vary with the seasons, and some areas may be closed during winter months. Thermal City Gold Mine operates seasonally, while Spacious Skies Hidden Creek stays open year-round, giving guests the option of a quieter campground during the winter months.

How to book campgrounds near Glenwood
Reservation systems vary by property type. For Lake James State Park, book through the North Carolina State Parks reservation portal. Reservations must be made 1 day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 6 months in advance. Reservations are required for the paddle-in sites, and you must make the reservation prior to arriving.
Private parks use their own systems. Spacious Skies Hidden Creek, Riverbreeze Campground, and The Campground at Tom Johnson Camping Center accept online bookings through their operator websites or third-party platforms. For summer weekends and any holiday, book several weeks out.
What to expect on the ground
Most private parks in the Glenwood-Marion corridor accommodate big rigs and offer full hook-ups with 30- and 50-amp service, laundry, and bathhouses. Riverbreeze Campground provides shaded spots, picnic tables, fire pits, and easy river access.
State park sites are more rustic. Each campsite has a fire pit and picnic table, potable water faucets are located throughout the camping area, and a bathhouse with toilets and hot showers is open 24/7 near the parking area at the Catawba River walk-in area. There is no running water at the paddle-in camping area, campers must bring their own water for drinking and washing dishes, and toilet facilities are strategically located throughout the camping area. Cell service can be limited, so plan accordingly. Pets are allowed at the park and at campsites, but not permitted on the swim beach or inside buildings, and must be on an attended leash of no longer than 6 feet.

How much does an RV rental in Glenwood, NC cost?

On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $275 per night, and Class A motorhomes range from $225 to $400 depending on size and season. Because Glenwood sits in McDowell County just south of Lake James, you will often find better rates than in nearby Asheville. Many hosts also discount weekly stays by 10 to 20 percent.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Glenwood%2C%20North%20CarolinaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Glenwood, NC?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Glenwood. North Carolina does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for typical personal motorhomes or travel trailers. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your identification is verified through the platform during booking, so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). Most renters are surprised how quickly they go from booking to driving down US-221 toward Lake James.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my RV rental?
You can book your Glenwood RV rental with confidence. Every booking through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. During checkout you choose the coverage level that fits your trip, and the protection plan helps cover eligible damage to the RV so you are not on the hook for unexpected bumps or scrapes. Hosts do not set the coverage tier; you do. That means you stay in control of how much protection your trip near Lake James, Linville Falls, or Catawba Falls carries.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat's the cancellation policy if my plans change?
Booking is low risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and every reservation includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your Glenwood dates without stress. Refund eligibility after the grace period depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. If a host cancels, guests receive a refund or travel credit. If severe weather or another extraordinary event impacts your dates, contact RVezy support and they will walk you through your options. Go ahead and reserve that Lake James weekend; flexibility is built in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Glenwood?
Absolutely, your pup is welcome. A pet-friendly RV rental Glenwood travelers can book is easy to find on RVezy: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to see hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Lake James State Park's Catawba River and Paddy's Creek areas allow leashed pets on trails and at campsites, and the nearby Fonta Flora State Trail is a beautiful leash-friendly walk along the lake. Some hosts charge a small pet cleaning fee of $25 to $75, shown upfront on the listing. Message the host before booking to confirm any dog size or breed considerations and ask for their favorite local walking spot.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/lake-james-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Glenwood?
Yes, and delivery is the easiest way to start your trip. RV delivery Glenwood hosts commonly offer service to nearby campgrounds like Lake James State Park (about 10 minutes north) and properties around Marion and Nebo. Many hosts will drive the rig to your site, level it, hook up water and 30/50-amp electric, and walk you through every system so you are not figuring it out alone. Delivery fees usually run $2 to $4 per mile from the host's location, with some offering flat rates within McDowell County. This is perfect for a first time renting an RV, because you skip the towing learning curve and arrive to a Lake James vacation that is already set up.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Glenwood%2C%20North%20CarolinaHow far can I drive, and do rentals come with unlimited mileage?
You have plenty of road ahead. Most hosts in the Glenwood area include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, especially for longer bookings. Extra miles typically run $0.30 to $0.50 each, so plan your route ahead. From Glenwood, popular drives include Asheville (about 40 miles west on I-40), Boone (about 60 miles north via US-221), Great Smoky Mountains National Park (about 90 miles west), Charlotte (about 75 miles east), and Blowing Rock (about 65 miles north). For a shorter RV road trip from Glenwood, the Blue Ridge Parkway stretch through Little Switzerland and Linville Falls is under 50 miles and one of the most scenic drives in the eastern US.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Glenwood, NC?
You are spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Glenwood include Lake James State Park (Paddy's Creek and Catawba River areas with electric and water hookups and lake access, about 10 miles north), Tom Johnson Camping Center RV Park in Marion (full hookups, very RV-friendly), Buck Creek Campground in Marion (creekside sites near Pisgah National Forest), and Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground near Swannanoa (mountain views, about 30 minutes west). For RV camping Glenwood weekends during fall foliage (mid-October), book Lake James State Park as soon as the six-month reservation window opens.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/lake-james-state-parkWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Glenwood?
You have great options nearly year-round. The sweet spot for a Glenwood RV trip is late April through mid-June (highs 70 to 82°F, blooming rhododendron) and mid-September through late October, when fall color along the Blue Ridge Parkway is world-famous and daytime highs sit in the 60s and low 70s. Summer (July to August) brings warm 85°F days perfect for swimming at Lake James but afternoon thunderstorms are common. Winters are mild compared to the high country: Glenwood sees highs in the 45 to 55°F range with occasional snow. Insider tip: the second weekend of October aligns with Marion's Mountain Glory Festival, a fantastic add-on to any RV camping trip.
weather.gov/gsp/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You are going to do great, and you will not be doing it alone. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup or delivery, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, slide-outs, and the dump process. For first time renting an RV near Glenwood, choose a Class B campervan or a smaller Class C (under 25 feet) to keep things easy, since you will mostly drive smooth roads like I-40, US-221, and NC-226. The Blue Ridge Parkway has tunnels with height limits (the lowest in North Carolina is just over 10 feet 6 inches), so check your RV height before heading up. Message your host with any questions before pickup; they want your trip to go well.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/tunnel-heights.htmWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue on the road?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so if you have a flat tire, dead battery, lockout, or mechanical issue around Glenwood or on the Blue Ridge Parkway, help is one phone call away. Your host is also a direct resource and often the fastest fix for small questions like how to reset the inverter. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Save the roadside assistance number to your phone before leaving pickup, and screenshot it in case you lose signal in the McDowell County mountains.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Glenwood RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, multi-state road trips are one of the best parts of renting an RV in North Carolina. Most hosts allow travel throughout the lower 48 states, so you can easily roll into Tennessee (Great Smoky Mountains is about 90 miles west), Virginia (the Blue Ridge Parkway continues north), South Carolina (Greenville is about 75 miles south), or Georgia. Travel into Canada may be allowed by individual hosts; message them before booking to confirm and discuss insurance considerations. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage does not extend there. A classic RV road trip from Glenwood is the full Blue Ridge Parkway run into Virginia and back, about 5 to 7 days of pure mountain scenery.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel during my trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, but it is manageable. Class B campervans get about 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, Class A coaches 6 to 10 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 MPG when towing). North Carolina gas prices typically run a bit below the national average. For a typical 3-day, 300-mile loop from Glenwood through Lake James, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and back, budget roughly $100 to $200 in fuel for a Class C. Check current prices on the EIA before you go, and fill up in Marion or Morganton, where prices are often cheaper than Asheville or Boone.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Glenwood?
Earlier is better, especially for popular spots. Lake James State Park opens its reservation window 6 months in advance through the official North Carolina State Parks reservation system, and prime weekends (Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, and October fall-color weekends) often book within hours of opening. For private parks like Tom Johnson Camping Center or Buck Creek Campground, 2 to 4 weeks out is usually fine outside of peak season. For a family RV trip Glenwood adventure during October leaf-peeping, set a calendar reminder six months ahead. If you miss the window, RVezy hosts who offer delivery can often place you on private land with hookups as a flexible Plan B.
northcarolinastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Glenwood?
Driving around Glenwood is friendlier than many mountain destinations. I-40 runs just north of town and provides smooth interstate access east to Morganton and west to Asheville. US-221 and NC-226 are well-maintained two-lane roads with moderate grades. The Blue Ridge Parkway is scenic but slow (45 mph limit) and has tunnels with height restrictions, so check your RV's height before heading up. Watch for fog in low areas near the Catawba River in early morning, and brief afternoon thunderstorms in summer. Winter occasionally brings icy patches above 3,000 feet elevation, so check NCDOT conditions before driving toward Little Switzerland. Pro tip: avoid Highway 80 (the Diamondback) in larger Class A motorhomes; tight switchbacks make it tough.
drivenc.gov/What amenities do campgrounds near Glenwood typically offer?
You'll be well taken care of. Lake James State Park's Paddy's Creek campground offers sites with electric and water hookups, modern bathhouses with hot showers, a dump station, and lake swimming access. Tom Johnson Camping Center in Marion offers full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, and laundry. Most private parks in McDowell County include picnic tables, fire rings, and potable water fill stations. For dumping waste and topping off fresh water mid-trip, Tom Johnson and many Marion-area private parks offer dump-and-fill services for a small fee (usually $10 to $15) even if you're not camping there. Pro tip: ask your RVezy host for their preferred local dump station, they'll know the closest and cheapest.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/lake-james-state-park/campingWhat's typically included inside the RV?
You are stepping into a home on wheels. Most motorhome rental Glenwood listings (Class A, B, and C) include a full kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge, and sink; a bathroom with toilet and shower; comfortable beds (queen or king plus convertible dinettes); air conditioning and furnace; seatbelts for all passengers; and house batteries with optional generator or solar. Many include a TV, and some offer Wi-Fi hotspots, which is helpful given the spotty cell signal around Lake James. Travel trailers offer similar amenities minus the cab. Hosts usually provide basic kitchenware and linens (check the listing). Filter by Sleeps 4+ or Sleeps 6+ to match your group, and message hosts to confirm any must-have items.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Glenwood%2C%20North%20CarolinaWhat add-ons can I get, and how do pickup and drop-off work?
Hosts make trips easy with helpful extras. Popular add-ons for a campervan rental Glenwood booking include linen/bedding packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), camping chairs and outdoor rugs, portable grills, bike racks, generators, and even kayaks (perfect for Lake James). Pickup is typically at the host's location in or near Marion, Nebo, or Glenwood, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough. Many hosts offer delivery to campgrounds for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies, generator hours, and any add-on fees are shown clearly on the listing before you book. Pro tip: book the kayak or paddleboard add-on, Lake James has 150 miles of shoreline and crystal-clear coves to explore.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/lake-james-state-park/activitiesHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and transparent. You pay securely through RVezy at booking; no cash is exchanged with the host. The total includes your nightly rate, host fees, RVezy service fee, taxes, and your chosen protection plan, all itemized before you confirm. A security deposit (often $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is held separately from your booking payment and is released after drop-off if the RV is returned clean, on time, and undamaged. Take dated photos at pickup and drop-off, refuel to the agreed level, empty tanks if required, and stay within your mileage allowance. Message your host the morning of drop-off to confirm logistics and keep returns smooth.
