Campgrounds near Gorman, North Carolina
Gorman is an unincorporated community in Durham County, North Carolina, sitting on the northern edge of the Research Triangle between Durham and Raleigh. For RV travelers, the practical draw is proximity to Falls Lake State Recreation Area, located about 15 miles east of downtown Durham, which anchors most of the developed camping in the region.
The closest RV-friendly options are inside Falls Lake itself. Holly Point offers 158 campsites total, 89 with water and 50/30-amp electric hookups. Rolling View offers 115 campsites total, 80 with water and 50/30-amp electric hookups. Both Holly Point and Rolling View have a dump station, though neither offers sewer at individual sites. BW Wells Group Campgrounds serves organized groups by advance reservation and is hike-in, tent-only.
For a base closer to Raleigh, William B Umstead State Park sits between the two cities and has a small family campground with a mix of non-electric sites and sites with water, power, and septic hookups. Triangle RV Park is a private-park alternative for travelers who want full hookups closer to the Triangle's highways and RDU airport.
Things to do near Gorman
Water recreation dominates the area. Falls Lake has more than 300 campsites across seven access areas, plus a portion of the Mountains-to-Sea State Trail and a well-regarded mountain bike trail system at the Beaverdam access. Six of the access areas offer boat ramps or launching facilities, and anglers regularly pull bass, bluegill, catfish, and crappie out of the lake.
Swimmers have several options. Sandling Beach, Rolling View, and Beaverdam offer sandy swimming beaches open to the public, while Holly Point has a swimming beach open only to campers. A privately operated marina next to the Rolling View access offers slips, storage, and paddle-craft rentals.
At William B Umstead State Park, more than 20 miles of hiking trails range from easy lakeside walks to longer routes, with dedicated mountain biking on the multi-use trails and seasonal boat rentals on Big Lake.

How to book campgrounds near Gorman
Falls Lake and William B Umstead are managed by North Carolina State Parks and take reservations through the state parks reservation portal. Individual sites at Holly Point and Rolling View can be booked by loop; both parks have RV loops with water and electric hookups and separate tent-only areas. William B Umstead accepts reservations up to six months in advance, with a one-day minimum lead time.
Group camping runs on different rules. Larger group sites are available at Rolling View, Shinleaf, and B.W. Wells. Group camping is by advance reservation only and is for tents only, with no RVs or trailers permitted, and each site accommodates up to 35 people.
For a private-park RV site with fewer restrictions, Triangle RV Park books directly through the operator. Reserve early for summer weekends and holidays around Falls Lake.
What to expect on arrival at Gorman campgrounds
Falls Lake campgrounds are forested and spread across multiple access points, so plan the driving route to the specific loop, not just the park entrance. Holly Point sits close to the lake in a wooded setting. Most sites are back-in, though many pads are long enough to accommodate larger rigs. Bring leveling blocks for uneven pads. There are no sewer hookups at individual sites, but dump stations are conveniently located near each campground entrance.
Expect aircraft noise across much of the area given proximity to RDU International Airport. Cell coverage varies by carrier and loop.
At William B Umstead, the front gate closes at the posted closing hours of the park, but registered campers receive a combination lock code to enter and exit after hours, and a camp host is on site for after-hours needs. Pets must stay leashed, and firewood is sold on site rather than gathered.
