Campgrounds and RV parks near Highlands, NC

The Cullasaja Gorge corridor along U.S. 64 links a chain of roadside waterfalls, including Bridal Veil Falls, Dry Falls, and Cullasaja Falls, all reachable on short walks from pullouts. Whiteside Mountain and Sunset Rock offer moderate hikes with cliff-top views over the plateau. The Cullasaja and Chattooga river systems are known for trout fishing and, further downstream, whitewater. Lake Glenville and Lake Sequoyah give paddlers flat-water options close to town. Families often combine a waterfall day with a stop at the Highlands Nature Center and the Bascom art campus. Downtown Highlands is walkable, with restaurants, ice cream, and small shops concentrated on Main Street. Cashiers, about 10 miles east, adds another cluster of hiking trailheads and farm markets.

Highlands has a cool, wet mountain climate. Average high temperatures range from a mild 43.7°F in January to a warm 81.5°F in July, while average lows fluctuate between 28°F in January and 61.3°F in July. Summer daytime temperatures are noticeably cooler than in the piedmont, which is why the town has long drawn seasonal visitors. Late spring through early fall is the core RV season. May and June bring rhododendron and mountain laurel blooms, July and August are peak occupancy, and late September into mid-October delivers the fall color window that fills campgrounds well in advance. Precipitation is spread across the year, with the cooler months often running wetter than midsummer, and total annual precipitation is among the highest in the eastern United States. Winter is quieter and colder. Snowfall is possible from January through April and again in November and December, and some private campgrounds close or reduce services during the coldest weeks. Travelers heading up in winter should check road conditions on U.S. 64 and NC 106.

Expect winding two-lane approaches, cool overnight lows even in summer, and frequent afternoon showers in the warmer months. Cell service is uneven once campers leave the town center, and some campgrounds in river valleys have limited over-the-air TV or streaming reliability. Site surfaces vary from gravel pads at established RV parks to grass sites on farm properties like Cardinal Ridge Farm RV and B. Shade is generally abundant, which helps in summer but can limit rooftop solar. Black bears are active across the plateau, so food storage discipline is required at every campground. Most parks are pet friendly with leash rules, and quiet hours are strictly observed. Grocery runs are easiest in Highlands, Cashiers, or Franklin.
