Campgrounds near Hollister, North Carolina
Hollister sits in Halifax County in northeastern North Carolina, roughly halfway between Rocky Mount and the Virginia border. The area is rural and wooded, with the Roanoke River watershed to the north and Fishing Creek running through the county. RV travelers typically use Hollister as a base for two draws: Medoc Mountain State Park, a 3,893-acre North Carolina state park in Halifax County near Hollister, just east of town, and Lake Gaston to the north.
Campground options range from state park tent and RV loops to full-hookup lakeside resorts. Medoc Mountain State Park handles the outdoors-focused stays, while Lake Gaston RV and Camping Resort, The Club Resort at Lake Gaston - Members, and Lake Gaston Americamps cover the boating and lake-recreation crowd. Enfield / Rocky Mount KOA Journey offers an interstate-adjacent option for travelers routing along I-95.
Most sites are drive-in and accessible year-round on paved roads. Rig-size limits vary by campground, and shaded, wooded sites are common across the region.
Things to do near Hollister
Medoc Mountain State Park is the closest natural attraction, with hiking trails along Little Fishing Creek, paddling, mountain biking, and a park-run campground. The terrain is gentle by mountain standards but wooded and quiet, and it works well for families with younger kids.
Lake Gaston, about a half-hour north, is the region's main water destination. The reservoir stretches along the Roanoke River between North Carolina and Virginia and supports bass fishing, boating, swimming, and waterskiing. Boat ramps and marinas are scattered around the lake, and several campgrounds have private ramps or beach areas.
Off-water options include the town of Littleton, small local museums, and easy day trips to Rocky Mount, roughly 23 miles south of the park, for groceries, restaurants, and supply runs.

52° / 30°F 90 mmCool and quiet; most lake resorts on reduced schedules
The prime RV season runs from April through October. Spring brings warm days, blooming dogwoods, and manageable humidity, and it is a strong window for both state park camping and lake trips before the summer crowds arrive. Reservations at Medoc Mountain fill quickly on spring weekends.
Summer is peak season at Lake Gaston. Water temperatures are warm enough for swimming from June into September, and lakeside resorts run at high occupancy on weekends and holidays. Heat and humidity are significant in July and August, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Book several weeks out for July 4th and Labor Day weekends, and note that a two-night minimum stay applies on Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends at Medoc Mountain.
Fall offers cooler nights, lower humidity, and good fishing. Medoc Mountain State Park is open year round, with reduced facilities in the coldest months, while private lake resorts often run on shortened schedules through winter. Winter camping is possible but quiet.
How to book campgrounds near Hollister
Medoc Mountain State Park uses the North Carolina State Parks reservation system, which accepts bookings up to six months in advance, with a one-day minimum lead time before arrival. Weekend spring and fall dates go quickly, so booking early is recommended. Sites include a mix of tent, RV, and group options.
Lake Gaston RV and Camping Resort is a Thousand Trails property; members book directly through Thousand Trails and non-members reserve through partner platforms. The Club Resort at Lake Gaston - Members is members-only. Lake Gaston Americamps and the Enfield / Rocky Mount KOA Journey take standard online reservations through their operator sites, with holiday weekends often requiring multi-night minimums.
For summer trips, aim to book six to eight weeks ahead. Shoulder-season stays are typically easier to secure closer to the arrival date.
What to expect on the ground
Roads in and around Hollister are two-lane rural highways. They handle standard RVs and travel trailers without issue, but drivers of larger fifth wheels should plan routes in advance and avoid narrow county cut-throughs. From I-95, take exit 160 at NC 561 west and travel nine miles to the park. Cell service is generally reliable along the main state routes and can drop in wooded pockets.
Sites at Lake Gaston campgrounds tend to be wooded with a mix of pull-through and back-in configurations. Full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service are common at the private resorts, while Medoc Mountain provides a more rustic experience on its RV sites.
Expect insects in summer, particularly mosquitoes near the water and ticks on wooded trails. Standard repellent, screen use, and post-hike checks handle most issues. Firewood should be purchased locally to avoid transporting pests.

Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Hollister. North Carolina does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or special endorsement for any motorhome on the RVezy platform, from compact campervans to 40-foot Class A coaches. Each listing on RVezy shows the exact mileage policy and overage rate, so you can math it out before you book. Pro tip: ask the host if a weekly mileage package is cheaper than per-mile.
ncdot.gov/travel-maps/Pages/default.aspxWhere are the best campgrounds near Hollister, NC?
You are spoiled for choice on RV camping near Hollister. Medoc Mountain State Park is the local gem, with shaded, level sites, electric hookups on a portion of the loop, a dump station, and miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. Thousand Trails Lake Gaston in Littleton offers full hookups with 50-amp service near the water. Americamps Lake Gaston in Bracey, VA (about 25 minutes north) has a pool and beach access. Carolina Crossroads RV Resort in Roanoke Rapids is a convenient I-95 stop with concrete pads and full amenities, making it an easy first or last night for your Hollister RV trip.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/medoc-mountain-state-parkWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Hollister?
April through early June and mid-September through October are the sweet spots for a Hollister RV trip. Spring temperatures sit in the comfortable 65 to 80°F range with blooming rhododendrons at Medoc Mountain, while fall delivers crisp 50 to 75°F days and gorgeous hardwood color along Fishing Creek. Summer (July and August) climbs into the upper 80s and low 90s with high humidity, ideal for swimming at Lake Gaston but you'll want a rig with strong air conditioning. Winters are mild (35 to 55°F) and Medoc Mountain stays open year-round, so off-season bookings are quiet, cheap, and underrated.
weather.gov/mhx/I've never rented an RV before, will I be able to handle it?
You've got this. First time renting an RV in Hollister, NC is genuinely beginner-friendly, especially because every host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering propane, slide-outs, the water system, the generator, and dump procedures. Roads around Halifax County are flat, well-paved, and lightly trafficked compared to bigger metros, so even a 25-foot Class C feels manageable on Highway 561 or US 158. Want to skip driving entirely? Book a host who offers delivery and setup at Medoc Mountain State Park. Pro tip: message your host with questions before pickup, most reply within an hour and love helping new renters succeed.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rv-safetyWhat happens if I break down or have a problem on the road?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so if you get a flat on NC-561, a dead battery at Lake Gaston, or need a tow back from the Outer Banks, you make one call and help is dispatched. RVezy customer support is reachable before, during, and after your trip. Save both numbers in your phone before pickup and you'll cruise through any hiccup with zero stress.
ncdps.gov/our-organization/law-enforcement/state-highway-patrolWhat are the best RV road trips from Hollister?
An RV road trip from Hollister opens up some of the best of the Mid-Atlantic. Head 3 hours east to the Outer Banks (Cape Hatteras and Ocracoke) for beach camping with wild horses. Drive 1.5 hours south to Raleigh for breweries and the NC Museum of Art. Go 4 hours west to Asheville and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Roll 4 hours north to Washington, DC for monuments and Smithsonian museums. Or stay close and circle Lake Gaston in under an hour. Cross-border travel into Virginia is fully allowed (Lake Gaston actually straddles the state line); travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals.
visitnc.com/trip-ideasHow much should I budget for fuel on a Hollister RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, but it's easy to plan for. Travel trailers don't burn extra gas beyond your tow vehicle, campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A coaches sit around 6 to 10 MPG. North Carolina gas typically runs $0.20 to $0.40 cheaper per gallon than the national average, with stations clustered along I-95 at Roanoke Rapids and Rocky Mount. A 300-mile loop from Hollister to the Outer Banks and back in a Class C will cost roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up before leaving I-95 because rural Halifax County pumps can run higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Hollister?
For Medoc Mountain State Park, reservations open 6 months in advance through the North Carolina State Parks reservation system, and prime summer weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) fill within days of opening, so book the moment your dates clear. Lake Gaston private parks like Americamps and Thousand Trails typically need 2 to 4 months ahead for peak summer and 2 to 3 weeks for shoulder seasons. Carolina Crossroads RV Resort off I-95 is usually bookable within a week, even in summer. Pro tip: pair your campground reservation with an RVezy booking on the same day so your trip locks in together.
northcarolinastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the driving conditions like around Hollister?
Driving an RV around Hollister is about as easy as it gets in North Carolina. Halifax County is flat coastal plain with wide rural highways (NC-561, US-158, US-301) and minimal traffic outside of I-95 near Roanoke Rapids. There are no mountain passes, low bridges, or tight tunnels to worry about. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk on backroads near Medoc Mountain, sudden summer thunderstorms (pull over if visibility drops), and occasional hurricane remnants in September. The Lake Gaston bridges on NC-903 and US-158 are wide and RV-friendly. Pro tip: use Google Maps with the RV/truck routing extension or apps like RV Life to dodge any weight-limited county bridges.
drivenc.gov/What hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Hollister?
Local campgrounds cover the full range. Medoc Mountain State Park offers electric (30-amp) at about half the sites, communal water spigots, hot showers, flush toilets, and a dump station, but no individual sewer, so arrive with a full freshwater tank. Thousand Trails Lake Gaston and Americamps Lake Gaston provide full hookups including 50-amp power, sewer, water, plus pools and laundry. Carolina Crossroads has concrete pads, full hookups, a hot tub, and dog park. For dumping and freshwater fills on travel days, Carolina Crossroads and the Roanoke Rapids Pilot/Flying J just off I-95 exit 173 are reliable stops. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a short video of the rig at pickup and dropoff to keep your full deposit and avoid disputes.
