Camping near Horse Shoe, North Carolina
Horse Shoe is a small community in Henderson County, along the French Broad River between Brevard and Hendersonville in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. RV travelers use it as a quiet base for reaching DuPont State Recreational Forest, Pisgah National Forest, and downtown Asheville within a short drive.
Private RV parks handle most overnight demand in the immediate area. Maddox Meadows RV Park, Land of Waterfalls RV Campground, Boylston Creek RV Park & Cabins, Rutledge Lake RV Resort, and Oak Fern RV Park sit within roughly a half-hour of Horse Shoe and typically offer full hookups, dump stations, and access to the region's waterfalls and trail systems.
Public camping is not available inside DuPont State Recreational Forest itself, so RV travelers looking for federal-land options generally head to Pisgah National Forest, where developed campgrounds like Davidson River operate on a seasonal schedule.
Things to do around Horse Shoe
DuPont State Recreational Forest is the headline attraction, with more than 80 miles of multi-use trails and a chain of waterfalls that includes Hooker, Triple, High, and Bridal Veil Falls. The three-waterfall loop from the High Falls parking area is the most popular family hike, and the forest is also one of North Carolina's better mountain-biking and horseback-riding areas. Parking lots often fill by mid-morning in summer, so an early start helps.
Pisgah National Forest sits to the west and offers fishing, tubing, and dispersed camping along the Davidson and Mills rivers. Chimney Rock State Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the shops and restaurants of downtown Brevard and Hendersonville round out a typical trip.

Spring brings wildflowers and full waterfalls, along with steady rainfall through March and April. Trails can be muddy, and the last spring freeze in nearby Asheville falls near early April, so shoulder-season RV travelers should pack for chilly nights.
Summer is peak season. Days are warm and humid, afternoon thunderstorms are common, and swimming holes at Hooker Falls and along the French Broad tributaries stay busy. Private RV parks around Horse Shoe often fill weekends well in advance, and Pisgah's developed campgrounds require reservations for the busiest dates. Davidson River Campground in Pisgah National Forest typically operates April 1 through October 31, while Mount Pisgah Campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway runs May through late October.
Fall is the other high-demand window: cool nights, low humidity, and leaf color across the Blue Ridge draw crowds from late September through late October. Winter is quiet, with occasional snow and freezing nights, though most days climb above freezing and many private parks stay open year-round.

Booking and reservations
Private RV parks near Horse Shoe, including Maddox Meadows RV Park, Land of Waterfalls RV Campground, Boylston Creek RV Park & Cabins, Rutledge Lake RV Resort, and Oak Fern RV Park, book directly through their own websites or by phone. Weekend and holiday sites in summer and October leaf-season should be reserved several weeks to several months out.
Federal campgrounds in Pisgah National Forest, such as Davidson River and Lake Powhatan, use Recreation.gov on a rolling six-month booking window, and popular loops can sell out within minutes for peak weekends.
DuPont State Recreational Forest does not offer camping. Picnic shelters at Lake Imaging, Lake Dense, Guion Farm, High Falls, and Triple Falls can be reserved through the North Carolina Forest Service, with Triple Falls available first-come, first-served.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into Horse Shoe are paved and easy for larger rigs, but many forest service roads in Pisgah are gravel, narrow, and not suitable for big motorhomes. Travelers planning to visit dispersed sites should verify road conditions with the Pisgah Ranger District before committing.
Elevations in the surrounding forests run from about 2,100 feet near Davidson River to nearly 5,000 feet at Mount Pisgah, which means noticeably cooler nights than the lowlands even in summer. Rainfall averages roughly 45 inches a year around Asheville and more at higher elevations, so awnings, mats, and rain gear pay off.
Cell service is reliable in Horse Shoe and along US-64 but drops quickly inside Pisgah and parts of DuPont. Campfires are prohibited inside DuPont State Recreational Forest and allowed at most private RV parks and at developed Pisgah campgrounds, subject to any active fire restrictions.

Booking an RV rental in Horse Shoe is low-risk thanks to RVezy's standardized cancellation policy, which applies across every listing rather than being set by individual hosts. Absolutely, plenty of pet-friendly RV rental options in Horse Shoe welcome dogs and cats. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see listings whose hosts allow furry co-pilots, and message the host with your pet's size and breed to confirm any small cleaning fee. Once you're here, your pup will love DuPont State Recreational Forest, where leashed dogs are allowed on nearly all trails including the famous Triple Falls hike, and the French Broad River access points around Horse Shoe are great for water-loving dogs. fs.usda.gov/recarea/nfsnc/recarea/?recid=48114Can the RV be delivered to my campground in Horse Shoe?
Yes, RV delivery in Horse Shoe is a popular option and a real stress-saver for first-time renters. Many hosts will drop the RV directly at your campsite at places like Lake Powhatan, Davidson River Campground, or a private property near the French Broad, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see which hosts offer delivery and how far they will travel; expect a flat fee or per-mile charge based on distance from their home base. It is the easiest way to enjoy a Horse Shoe RV trip without ever driving the rig yourself.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Horse%20Shoe%2C%20North%20CarolinaAre there RV rentals in Horse Shoe with unlimited mileage?
Yes, several hosts in the Horse Shoe area offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal if you are planning a Blue Ridge Parkway road trip or a loop through Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Many listings include 100 to 150 free miles per night and charge roughly $0.30 to $0.45 for each additional mile, so check the listing's mileage policy before booking. For reference, it is about 20 miles to downtown Asheville, around 30 miles to the Blue Ridge Parkway's Mount Pisgah area, and about 50 miles one-way to Cherokee. Pro tip: if you are planning more than 300 miles total, filter for unlimited-mileage listings or message the host about a custom package.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Horse%20Shoe%2C%20North%20CarolinaWhere can I park or camp an RV near Horse Shoe, NC?
Horse Shoe is surrounded by excellent campgrounds, so finding a spot for your RV is easy. North Mills River Campground in Pisgah National Forest sits just minutes away with electric sites along the river, Lake Powhatan Recreation Area offers full hookups and swimming about 20 minutes north, and Davidson River Campground near Brevard is a fan favorite for trout fishing and waterfall access. For full-amenity stays, try Lakewood RV Resort in Flat Rock or Asheville West KOA Holiday in Candler. Reserve federal sites at Recreation.gov up to six months ahead, especially for October weekends when leaf-peepers fill every site in the region.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234023When is the best time to visit Horse Shoe in an RV?
The sweet spots for RV camping in Horse Shoe are late April through early June and mid-September through early November. Spring brings rhododendron blooms, roaring waterfalls in DuPont State Forest, and daytime highs in the 65 to 75 degree range. Fall delivers world-famous leaf color (peak is usually mid-to-late October at this elevation) with crisp 60-degree days and cool 40-degree nights, ideal for campfires. Summer is warm and humid with highs in the low 80s and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, so target morning hikes. Winter rentals are available too with lows dipping into the 20s, but you'll have the trails almost to yourself.
weather.gov/gsp/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Horse Shoe?
You'll do great, and Horse Shoe is actually one of the friendliest areas in North Carolina for a first time renting an RV. Highway 64 and Highway 280 around Horse Shoe are wide, well-maintained two-lane roads with manageable grades, and most local campgrounds have pull-through sites that don't require backing up. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, slide-outs, holding tanks, and propane, and you can message them during your trip if anything stumps you. If mountain driving makes you nervous, skip the Blue Ridge Parkway's steeper sections and stick to the French Broad River valley. Plus, 24/7 roadside support is always one tap away.
ncdot.gov/travel-maps/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Horse Shoe trip?
You are covered. Every RV rental in Horse Shoe booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are at a Pisgah National Forest trailhead or parked along the French Broad River. Roadside support handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified service center. Your host is also a great first call for quick fixes like resetting the generator or troubleshooting the water pump, since they know their RV inside out. Save both numbers in your phone before pickup and you can relax into your Blue Ridge adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips from Horse Shoe, NC in an RV?
An RV road trip from Horse Shoe puts some of the Southeast's best scenery within easy reach. Drive about 20 miles northeast to Asheville for the Biltmore Estate and River Arts District, head roughly 50 miles west on US-74 to Cherokee and the eastern entrance of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, or take a southern loop to Greenville, SC and Caesars Head State Park. The Blue Ridge Parkway is just a short drive away; head north toward Boone or south toward Cherokee for unforgettable overlooks. Cross-border trips into Canada may be permitted with host approval, but travel into Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals due to insurance restrictions.
nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/index.htmWhat should I budget for fuel during a Horse Shoe RV trip?
Fuel is the single biggest variable on a Blue Ridge RV trip, so plan ahead and you'll stay on budget. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans 16 to 20 MPG, and tow vehicles pulling travel trailers around 10 to 12 MPG. Gas prices in the Hendersonville and Horse Shoe area usually run a few cents below the North Carolina state average, with the cheapest stations clustered along Highway 64 in Etowah and Mills River. For a typical 4-day, 300-mile trip in a Class C, budget $120 to $180 for fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Hendersonville before heading up the Blue Ridge Parkway, where stations are scarce.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Horse Shoe?
For the best campgrounds near Horse Shoe, reserve as early as possible, especially for summer weekends and October leaf season. Federal sites in Pisgah National Forest such as North Mills River, Davidson River, and Lake Powhatan open six months ahead on Recreation.gov and often fill quickly for fall dates. North Carolina State Park campgrounds like Gorges and Lake James book through the state's reservation system on a similar window. Private RV parks such as Lakewood RV Resort and Asheville West KOA typically accept reservations many months out. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly six months before your desired October Saturday and log in at 10 a.m. Eastern when the booking window opens.
recreation.gov/What are driving conditions like around Horse Shoe?
Driving an RV around Horse Shoe is pleasant most of the year, but a few local quirks are worth knowing. The main roads (NC-191, NC-280, US-64) are wide and RV-friendly, but the Blue Ridge Parkway has 26 tunnels with clearances as low as 10 feet 6 inches near Mount Pisgah, so check your rig's height before heading up. Summer afternoons bring sudden thunderstorms that can drop heavy rain in minutes, and winter occasionally delivers ice on higher-elevation roads above 3,000 feet. Avoid steep, narrow routes like Bear Wallow Road in larger Class A motorhomes. The French Broad River valley itself is gentle, low-elevation driving perfect for first-timers.
drivenc.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Horse Shoe?
Campgrounds near Horse Shoe range from rustic to full-service, so you can pick what matches your style. North Mills River Campground in Pisgah National Forest offers electric hookups, potable water spigots, vault and flush toilets, and a dump station, but no sewer hookups at individual sites. Lake Powhatan has full water and electric plus hot showers. Private parks like Lakewood RV Resort in Flat Rock and Asheville West KOA offer full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50 amp electric), WiFi, laundry, and pools. Public dump stations are available at North Mills River and the Hendersonville Camping World on Spartanburg Highway. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before leaving the host, since not every site has a spigot.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/nfsnc/recreation/camping-cabins/recarea/?recid=48114&actid=29What features and amenities come with a motorhome rental in Horse Shoe?
Motorhome rental in Horse Shoe comes loaded with home-on-wheels comforts. Expect a fully equipped kitchen with a fridge, stove, microwave, and most kitchenware; a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower; comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on the rig; air conditioning and a furnace; and seatbelts for every traveling passenger. Most listings include a TV, and many add a backup camera, outdoor speakers, and an awning for shaded riverside lunches. Generator, solar, and WiFi hotspots are common on newer rigs, which matters since cell service drops in parts of Pisgah National Forest and DuPont State Forest. Each RVezy listing spells out exactly what's included, so you'll know before you book.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rv-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for my Horse Shoe rental?
Horse Shoe hosts typically offer add-ons that make your trip smoother: linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, generator hours for boondocking ($3 to $5 per hour beyond what's included), propane refills, bike racks, and kid or pet bundles. Pickup is usually at the host's property in Horse Shoe, Mills River, or Hendersonville, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Standard mileage policies allow 100 to 150 free miles per night with $0.30 to $0.45 per additional mile, and generator hours often include 2 to 4 free per day. Pro tip: ask about a one-way drop in Asheville or Brevard, since many hosts will accommodate it for a small fee.
ncdot.gov/dmv/title-registration/Pages/default.aspxHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is fully handled through the RVezy platform, so you never hand cash or a check directly to the host. You pay your trip total (rental, fees, and chosen protection tier) by credit card at booking, and the security deposit is placed as a separate temporary hold on your card shortly before pickup, with the amount set by the host and shown on the listing. The hold is released after dropoff once the host confirms no damage, missing items, or extra cleaning. To keep things smooth, take time-stamped walkaround photos at pickup and dropoff, empty the black and gray tanks, and return the rig with the same fuel level.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Horse Shoe during winter for a cold-weather adventure?
Yes, winter RV rentals in Horse Shoe are available and surprisingly magical. Many local hosts list their rigs year-round, and the Blue Ridge looks stunning under a dusting of snow with far fewer crowds at DuPont State Forest's frozen waterfalls. Look for listings that mention four-season insulation, heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a working furnace, all of which matter when overnight lows in Horse Shoe can dip into the 20s in January and February. Plan to stay at campgrounds with shore power (30 or 50 amp) since running the furnace on propane alone drains tanks fast. Pro tip: Lake Powhatan stays open year-round and is a great winter base camp.
