Hiking is the anchor activity in the area. South Mountains State Park protects a rugged tract of roughly 21,000 acres, and its High Shoals Falls Loop is the signature trail, ending at a tall, clear waterfall. Trails at the park range from short interpretive loops to strenuous ridge climbs, and rangers run interpretive programs on trout streams, plants, and wildlife. Lake James State Park, about 30 to 40 minutes west, adds water-based options: a 700-foot swim beach at Paddy's Creek, boat ramps, canoe, kayak and paddleboard rentals in season, and mountain-bike-legal singletrack along the Fonta Flora Trail system. Late spring through early fall is the busiest RV window. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill first at state-park campgrounds, and holiday weekends carry a two-night minimum at North Carolina State Parks properties, including South Mountains and Lake James. The Paddy's Creek swim beach at Lake James is open for swimming from May through September, which drives most family bookings. Spring brings wildflowers and higher stream flows, making waterfall hikes at South Mountains especially scenic, though trails can be muddy after rain. Fall foliage in the South Mountains and along the Blue Ridge escarpment typically peaks from mid to late October, and cooler nights make campfires comfortable again. Winter camping is possible: South Mountains State Park and Lake James State Park are open year-round and close only on Christmas Day. Expect freezing overnight lows, occasional snow, and reduced ranger programming. Roads into the mountain parks are narrow and winding. The route into South Mountains State Park from I-40 involves several turns on secondary roads, and larger rigs should scout the approach or choose a private park closer to the interstate. RVs up to 50 feet are technically permitted at the South Mountains family campground, but many sites are much shorter and maneuvering is tight.
