Campgrounds and RV parks near Kenly, NC

The signature stop in town is the Tobacco Farm Life Museum, located just off I-95 Exit 107. At the heart of the site is a 6,000-square-foot museum that helps preserve and interpret the agricultural heritage of eastern North Carolina, and the 4.5-acre grounds are open for exploring the seven historic structures on the site. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Within a short drive, RV travelers can visit Hinnant Family Vineyards in Pine Level, the Ava Gardner Museum in Smithfield, and Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site south of Four Oaks. Carolina Premium Outlets in Smithfield is a common rainy-day stop, and downtown Raleigh, with its state museums and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, sits under an hour west. Families traveling with kids can also use campground amenities as an attraction of their own: pools, mini-golf, playgrounds, stocked ponds, and dog parks are standard at the larger resorts in the area.

Kenly has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and mild winters typical of the eastern North Carolina Piedmont. July is the warmest month, with average highs near the upper 80s Fahrenheit, while January is the coldest, with average highs in the low 50s and average lows in the mid 30s. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild days, cooler nights, and lower humidity than midsummer. Summer brings heat, high humidity, and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, along with peak demand at campgrounds close to I-95. Booking well ahead is important on holiday weekends, especially Memorial Day, July Fourth, and Labor Day. Larger resorts in the area typically run their outdoor pools from late spring into early fall, which is a reasonable rule of thumb for outdoor amenities across the region. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest storm risk in August and September. Inland Johnston County is generally spared direct hits, but remnants of tropical systems can bring heavy rain and localized flooding, so travelers should watch the National Hurricane Center outlook when planning late-summer and fall trips.

Expect flat, wooded sites on sandy soil, with shade from pines and hardwoods at most parks. Sites near I-95 can be noisy from highway and rail traffic; sites farther back on the same properties are usually quieter. Typical amenities at the larger resorts include a swimming pool, clubhouse, playground, catch-and-release fishing pond, and dog park. Cell coverage is generally strong along the I-95 corridor, and over-the-air TV reception from Raleigh-area stations is usable at most sites. Full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service are standard at the resort-style parks; smaller RV parks and mobile home properties may offer more basic setups. Biting insects, chiggers, and ticks are active from late spring through early fall, so pack repellent. Summer thunderstorms can be intense but usually pass quickly, and awnings should be retracted before leaving the site.
