Knightdale camping overview
Knightdale sits just east of Raleigh in Wake County, within short driving distance of two major public camping areas and several private RV parks. The town itself has limited camping inside its limits, so most RV travelers base out of nearby lakeside or state park campgrounds and use Knightdale as a stop for supplies, restaurants, and access to US 64 and I-540.
The closest public option is Holly Point at Falls Lake State Recreation Area, a large reservoir campground north of the city with tent, trailer, and RV sites managed by North Carolina State Parks. West of Raleigh, William B Umstead State Park offers a smaller family campground surrounded by hardwood forest between Raleigh, Cary, and Durham. BW Wells Group Campgrounds, also within the Falls Lake system, handles organized groups.
For travelers who prefer full-service private parks with longer stays, Coopers Mobile Home Park and RVs and 70 East RV and Mobile Home Park are located along the US 70 corridor near Knightdale.
Things to do near Knightdale
Falls Lake is the main outdoor draw. From Holly Point, campers can launch kayaks and canoes, swim at the designated beach, fish the coves, and hike shaded trails through pine and hardwood forest. Some sites sit close enough to the shoreline for direct water access.
William B Umstead State Park adds more than twenty miles of hiking trails plus additional multi-use and bridle routes, three small fishing lakes, and picnic shelters at both entrances. The park draws mountain bikers, trail runners, and horseback riders from across the Triangle.
In Knightdale itself, families can visit Knightdale Station Park for splash-pad play, ball fields, and open lawns, then head into downtown Raleigh, roughly fifteen minutes west, for the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, the North Carolina Museum of Art, and hockey and concerts at PNC Arena.

The main camping window in this area runs from spring through fall. Holly Point at Falls Lake operates from mid-March through October, with the busiest weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The William B Umstead family campground is open April 1 through October 31 and closes for the winter.
Spring brings mild temperatures, blooming dogwoods, and monarch butterflies passing through Falls Lake. Summer is hot and humid, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms; shaded sites fill first, and lake swimming is at its peak. Early fall stays warm into October and is often the most comfortable time to camp, with lower humidity and thinner crowds.
Winter camping options are limited near Knightdale because both major state park campgrounds close for the season. Private RV parks along US 70 typically stay open year-round for travelers passing through or needing a longer-term site.

How to book near Knightdale
Reservations for Holly Point and William B Umstead are handled through the North Carolina State Parks reservation system, powered by Aspira and ReserveAmerica. Sites can be booked online or by phone up to six months in advance, and campers must be at least eighteen years old to reserve a site.
Summer weekends and holidays at Holly Point fill quickly, so travelers should book several weeks or months out. The Umstead family campground has only twenty-eight sites, including non-electric sites, sites with water, power, and septic hookups, and six camper cabins, and it fills fast once advance booking opens.
BW Wells Group Campgrounds is reserved as a group site through the same Falls Lake system. Private parks such as Coopers Mobile Home Park and RVs and 70 East RV and Mobile Home Park are booked directly with the operator by phone.
What to expect at Knightdale campgrounds
Public campgrounds in this area are wooded, with tall pines and hardwoods providing shade. Sites typically include a picnic table, fire ring, and grill. Holly Point offers a mix of non-electric and hookup sites across multiple loops, with a central bathhouse, hot showers, and a dump station. Drainage varies by site, so checking site details before booking helps during wet weather.
William B Umstead accommodates trailers and smaller RVs at designated hookup sites, though most sites are geared to tents. The park sits under the RDU airport flight path, so expect aircraft noise day and night.
Quiet hours are enforced. Pets are allowed on a six-foot leash but not inside park buildings or cabins. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in North Carolina state park campgrounds. Firewood should be bought locally to prevent spreading invasive pests.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Knightdale, NC
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Knightdale, NC?
An RV rental in Knightdale is often more affordable than a hotel-plus-rental-car combo for a Triangle-area trip. On RVezy, travel trailers typically run about $80 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from roughly $175 to $275, and larger Class A coaches can reach $300 or more, with hosts setting their own rates. To find a cheap RV rental in Knightdale, travel midweek, target April or October shoulder season, and choose a travel trailer if you already have a capable tow vehicle. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book and message hosts early to lock in a Falls Lake weekend before the State Fair crowds arrive in mid-October.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Knightdale,%20North%20CarolinaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Knightdale, NC?
For nearly every motorhome and travel trailer on RVezy, a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Knightdale. North Carolina only requires a non-commercial Class B license for a single recreational vehicle over 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), and the vast majority of Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and travel trailers come in well under that. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and identity verification happens right inside the booking flow. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license and you are set to roll toward Falls Lake.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Knightdale RV rental?
You are covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Knightdale booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan that covers most physical damage to the vehicle, plus 24/7 roadside assistance for issues like flat tires, lockouts, and dead batteries. You choose your level of coverage during checkout, not the host, so you can dial in the peace of mind you want for a Falls Lake weekend or an Outer Banks road trip. Coverage details and limits are shown before you pay, so there are no surprises on your first booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my plans change?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy for every motorhome rental in Knightdale, and there is a money-back grace period right after you book so you have breathing room to confirm plans. Refund amounts after that grace period depend on how far out your trip start date is. The full policy is displayed during checkout on RVezy, so you can review it before paying. Pro tip: book early for State Fair week in October when Knightdale fills up fast, knowing the grace period has your back.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Knightdale RV trip?
Absolutely, your dog is welcome on plenty of trips. A pet-friendly RV rental in Knightdale is just a filter click away on RVezy, where you can sort listings by Pet-Friendly and message the host with your pup's size and breed before booking. Falls Lake State Recreation Area allows leashed pets at all campsites and on trails (just not on the swim beaches or inside buildings), so you can hike the Mountains-to-Sea Trail together right from your campsite. Knightdale Station Park also has a fenced dog park that's perfect for a pre-departure energy burn. Bring a long lead, poop bags, and a collapsible water bowl for hot Carolina afternoons.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/falls-lake-state-recreation-areaCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or driveway in Knightdale?
Yes, and it is a game-changer for first-timers. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Knightdale and across the Triangle, meaning they will tow or drive the rig straight to your driveway or a Falls Lake campsite, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. That is perfect if you would rather skip towing a 30-foot trailer down I-540 your first time out. To find delivery-ready listings, filter by Delivery on the search page and message the host with your destination address. Common delivery spots include Holly Point and Rolling View at Falls Lake, plus Jordan Lake campgrounds.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Knightdale,%20North%20CarolinaHow many miles can I drive on my Knightdale RV rental?
You'll have plenty of room to roam. Most hosts offering RV rental in Knightdale, NC include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day) with the option to add unlimited mileage for longer trips, and some listings include RV rental with unlimited mileage right out of the gate. Knightdale is centrally located in the Triangle, so daily mileage usually goes a long way: Raleigh is 15 miles, Durham 30 miles, Wilmington beaches 130 miles, and the Blue Ridge Parkway entrance near Asheville about 230 miles. Pro tip: estimate your total route before booking and ask the host for a flat-rate mileage bundle if you're planning a Knightdale RV trip across the state.
ncdot.gov/travel-maps/Pages/default.aspxWhere are the best campgrounds near Knightdale, NC?
You are spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Knightdale all sit within about a 45-minute drive: Holly Point at Falls Lake State Recreation Area offers lakefront sites with water and electric hookups; Rolling View Campground (also on Falls Lake) has a marina and family-friendly beach; Poplar Point and Crosswinds Campground at Jordan Lake deliver full-size sites that work well for big rigs; the NC State Fairgrounds Campground in Raleigh is great for events; and Raleigh Oaks RV Resort in Four Oaks brings resort-style amenities. Book Falls Lake and Jordan Lake sites up to six months in advance through the North Carolina State Parks reservation system, especially for summer weekends.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/falls-lake-state-recreation-area/camping-reservationsWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Knightdale?
Spring and fall are the sweet spot. RV camping in Knightdale shines from late March through early June, when daytime highs sit in the 70s and azaleas explode across the Triangle, and again from mid-September through early November, when leaves turn and humidity drops. July and August are warm and humid with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s, which is great for Falls Lake swimming but harder on the RV's air conditioning. Winters are mild (40s to 50s) and many Knightdale hosts rent year-round. Local insider tip: book October early to catch crisp days and the North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh.
weather.gov/rah/I've never driven an RV before. What support will I get?
You're not alone out there. First time renting an RV? Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering how to start the generator, dump tanks, deploy the awning, and operate slide-outs, and most are happy to do a quick driving lap with you. From Knightdale, beginner-friendly first trips include Falls Lake (25 minutes north) and Jordan Lake (45 minutes west) on mostly flat, divided highways like US-1 and I-540. Hosts also share their cell numbers for trip-time questions, and RVezy's customer support team is reachable 24/7. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome or small travel trailer for your first booking, they drive much like a large truck.
ncdot.gov/initiatives-policies/safety/driving-safety/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue on the road?
Help is one phone call away. Every motorhome rental in Knightdale booked on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, mechanical issues, and towing. Whether you are parked at Falls Lake, stuck on I-440 around Raleigh, or rolling toward the Smokies on a longer Knightdale RV trip, one call gets a service truck dispatched to your location. Your host is also typically reachable by phone or RVezy message for quick questions. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV registration and roadside assistance details at pickup so they are on your phone when you need them.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips from Knightdale, NC?
Knightdale is one of the best East Coast launchpads for an RV road trip. Popular routes from Knightdale include: the Outer Banks via US-64 East (Nags Head is 195 miles, about 3.5 hours); Wilmington and Carolina Beach via I-40 (130 miles, 2 hours); Asheville and the Blue Ridge Parkway via I-40 West (230 miles, 4 hours); Great Smoky Mountains National Park (around 280 miles); and Charleston, SC for a southern coastal escape (280 miles). Cross-border travel into Virginia or South Carolina is generally allowed, just confirm with your host. Travel to Mexico isn't covered. Pro tip: book Outer Banks campgrounds like Cape Hatteras KOA months in advance for summer.
ncdot.gov/travel-maps/Pages/default.aspxWhat should I budget for fuel on a Knightdale RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier costs to estimate. North Carolina gas prices typically run a little below the U.S. average, with diesel usually a bit higher than regular; check AAA's daily state averages before you leave. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A coaches 6 to 10 MPG. A 3-day Falls Lake trip in a Class C burns roughly 10 to 15 gallons, while a 5-day round trip from Knightdale to the Outer Banks could use 40 to 50 gallons. Pro tip: top off in Knightdale or Wendell before heading toward Falls Lake, since rural stations near campgrounds often charge more per gallon.
gasprices.aaa.com/?state=NCHow far in advance should I book a campground near Knightdale?
Sooner is better, but you have great options. North Carolina State Parks (including all Falls Lake and Jordan Lake campgrounds) accept reservations up to six months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and lakefront sites at Holly Point and Rolling View sell out within hours when summer weekends open. For State Fair week in October and Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends, book the day the window opens. Private parks like Raleigh Oaks RV Resort and the NC State Fairgrounds Campground often have more last-minute availability. Pro tip: holiday weekends require a two-night minimum at NC state parks, so plan Friday-to-Sunday rather than a single overnight.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/falls-lake-state-recreation-area/campingWhat are local driving conditions like around Knightdale?
Driving an RV around Knightdale is straightforward. The town sits right on US-64 and I-540, two wide, well-maintained highways with gentle terrain — Knightdale's elevation is only about 250 feet, so no mountain grades to worry about. Rush hour on I-440 and I-40 through Raleigh (roughly 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6:30 p.m. weekdays) can get tight, so time your departure for mid-morning. Summer afternoon thunderstorms roll through fast, and hurricane remnants occasionally bring heavy rain in September. Avoid narrow downtown Raleigh streets in anything over 25 feet. Pro tip: use US-64 East out of Knightdale toward the Outer Banks for the most RV-friendly route off the bat.
drivenc.gov/What amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Knightdale?
You'll find solid amenities at every level. Most full-hookup campgrounds within 45 minutes of Knightdale (like Raleigh Oaks RV Resort, Jones Station RV Park, and the NC State Fairgrounds Campground) offer 30/50-amp electric, city water, sewer, Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and dump stations. Falls Lake state campgrounds like Holly Point provide water and electric hookups at many sites plus centrally located bathhouses with hot showers, but sewer is via a central dump station only. You can fill fresh water at the campground entrance on arrival. Pro tip: pack a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-to-50-amp adapter so you're ready for any hookup configuration on your Knightdale RV trip.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/falls-lake-state-recreation-area/campingWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Knightdale?
More than you would think. A typical campervan rental in Knightdale or Class C motorhome on RVezy comes ready to camp with a queen or king bed, a dinette that converts to a sleeper, a full kitchen (fridge, stovetop, microwave, sink), a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, roof-mounted air conditioning, a propane furnace, and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Many include a TV, generator, or solar setup for off-grid weekends at Falls Lake, and Wi-Fi hotspots are a common host add-on. Sleeps counts range from 2 in a campervan to 8 or more in a bunkhouse travel trailer. Use RVezy's Sleeps filter to match the rig to your family RV trip in Knightdale.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Knightdale,%20North%20CarolinaWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for my rental?
There are plenty of ways to make life easier. Popular host add-ons for an RV rental in Knightdale include delivery and setup (often priced per mile from the host's location), generator usage packages, linens and kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, and propane refills. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Knightdale, Wendell, Zebulon, or nearby Raleigh suburbs, with a walkthrough included so you leave confident in every system. Some hosts allow flexible same-day pickup and drop-off windows. Pro tip: bundle delivery with a dump-station add-on to make your first booking essentially turn-key, then just enjoy the lake.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Knightdale,%20North%20CarolinaHow do payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and fully online. When you book an RV rental in Knightdale through RVezy, you pay the rental total, service fee, and chosen protection plan securely through the platform, not in cash or by e-transfer to the host. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card a few days before your trip and is released after drop-off, assuming the RV comes back in the same condition. To avoid any deposit issues, do a video walkaround at pickup with the host, follow the mileage and generator-hour terms on the listing, and return the RV with the same fuel and tank levels you started with.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I find an overnight RV spot or dump station near Knightdale?
You have several easy options. Within about 20 to 30 minutes of Knightdale, you can dump tanks and refill fresh water at Falls Lake State Recreation Area's Holly Point and Rolling View campgrounds (small fee for non-campers) and at the NC State Fairgrounds Campground in Raleigh. For overnight parking, planned RV camping in Knightdale at a campground is your best bet, since most Wake County retail lots and city streets prohibit overnight RV parking. Some Walmarts in eastern North Carolina permit one-night stays with manager approval, so always call the specific store ahead. Pro tip: download the Sanidumps or AllStays app before you leave to map dump stations along your route.
