Camping near Lake Lure, North Carolina
Lake Lure sits in Hickory Nut Gorge in Rutherford County, about 25 miles southeast of Asheville, at the base of Chimney Rock State Park. The town is centered on a 720-acre reservoir surrounded by the Blue Ridge foothills, and RV camping options are concentrated along the US 64/74A corridor and side roads leading toward the lake and Chimney Rock village.
Campgrounds in the area range from full-service motorcoach resorts to smaller family parks with basic hookups. Apple Valley Farm Motorcoach Resort and Emberglow Outdoor Resort cater to larger Class A rigs with paved sites and resort amenities, while Hitching Post Campground, Hickory Nut Falls Family Campground, and Camp Serene RV Park offer a more traditional campground experience closer to the trails and the river.
Most visitors use Lake Lure as a base for hiking Chimney Rock, boating on the lake, and day trips into Asheville, Hendersonville, and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Things to do around Lake Lure
Chimney Rock State Park is the anchor attraction, with a 315-foot granite monolith, an elevator inside the mountain, and hiking trails including the family-friendly Great Woodland Adventure and the Hickory Nut Falls Trail leading to a 404-foot waterfall featured in The Last of the Mohicans. Timed-entry reservations are required to enter the fee-based Chimney Rock attraction.
On the water, Lake Lure offers a public beach, pontoon and ski-boat rentals, guided tours, and swimming. Free hiking is available on Rumbling Bald Loop, the Weed Patch Mountain Trail, and other Hickory Nut Gorge conservancy trails.
The Lake Lure Flowering Bridge, a converted pedestrian span over the Rocky Broad River, is a short, stroller-friendly stop that pairs well with a village lunch.

Peak season runs from late spring through fall foliage in October. Summer brings warm, humid days ideal for the lake, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Weekends at Chimney Rock and lakeside campgrounds fill early, and timed-entry tickets for the park should be booked well in advance.
October is the busiest stretch for leaf-peeping in Hickory Nut Gorge, driven by proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Fall weekend sites at area RV parks often sell out weeks ahead, and traffic on US 64/74A backs up during peak color.
Spring brings wildflowers along gorge trails, mild temperatures, and lower rates. Winter is the quiet season: some campgrounds close or reduce operations and freezing nights are common. US 64/74A between Bat Cave and Chimney Rock reopened in spring 2026 after long-term Helene repairs, with some one-lane controls still in place, so visitors should confirm route status with NCDOT before arrival.

Booking a Lake Lure campground
Private campgrounds around Lake Lure, including Apple Valley Farm Motorcoach Resort, Emberglow Outdoor Resort, Hickory Nut Falls Family Campground, Hitching Post Campground, and Camp Serene RV Park, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends and October foliage weekends should be booked several months out, especially for pull-through and big-rig sites.
Chimney Rock State Park does not offer camping, and entry to the fee-based Chimney Rock attraction currently requires timed-entry reservations purchased through chimneyrockpark.com. Nearby state parks such as South Mountains and Lake James use the North Carolina State Parks reservation system for tent and RV sites.
Holiday weekends around Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day sell out earliest.
What to expect on-site
Sites at the larger resorts tend to be level with full hookups, paved or gravel pads, and Wi-Fi, while smaller family parks offer a mix of full and partial hookups, wooded sites, and shared bathhouses. Cell coverage in the gorge is variable, and steep, winding roads on approach can be tight for coaches over 35 feet, so drivers should confirm access with the campground.
Bears are active in Hickory Nut Gorge, so food, coolers, and trash must be secured. Summer brings mosquitoes and ticks near the river and wooded trails, and insect repellent and sturdy hiking shoes are useful.
Grocery and fuel stops are limited in Lake Lure village itself. Larger supermarkets and diesel are easier to find in Rutherfordton, Forest City, and Hendersonville.

To find a cheap RV rental in Lake Lure, book midweek, avoid peak fall foliage weekends in mid-October, and consider shoulder months like April or early November. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Lure%2C%20North%20CarolinaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Lake Lure, North Carolina?
Great news for first-timers: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in North Carolina, even for larger Class A motorhomes. No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special endorsement is required by the NC Division of Motor Vehicles for personal RV use. On RVezy, approved drivers are generally 25 or older and complete a quick ID verification through the platform before pickup. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto club before flying in. With that in your wallet, you are cleared to cruise Highway 64/74A toward Chimney Rock with zero red tape.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Lake Lure RV trip plans change?
You can book with confidence. RVezy applies a clear cancellation policy to every reservation, with a grace period right after booking where you can cancel for a full refund. After that window, the refund depends on how far out you cancel relative to your pickup date. Cancellation terms are set by RVezy, not individual hosts, so the process is consistent across every listing in Lake Lure. If a host has to cancel, RVezy will refund you or help you rebook. If plans change before your Lake Lure RV trip, reach out to RVezy support and the team will walk you through your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Lake Lure?
Bring the pup, Lake Lure is a tail-wagging paradise. Plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Lake Lure, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see them instantly. Once you arrive, leashed dogs are welcome along the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge, on several trails at nearby Chimney Rock State Park (the Great Woodland Adventure trail is a favorite), and at Morse Park Meadows right on the lakeshore. Many local campgrounds like Hitching Post Campground also welcome four-legged guests. Pro tip: message your host before booking to confirm pet fees and bring a towel, that post-swim shake after the Rocky Broad River is no joke.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/chimney-rock-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Lake Lure?
Yes, RV delivery in Lake Lure is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is perfect if it is your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will tow or drive the rig directly to campgrounds like Hitching Post Campground, Emberglow Outdoor Resort, or a private property in nearby Bat Cave, then level it, hook up water, power, and sewer, and walk you through every system. You skip the stress of backing a 30-foot trailer down a winding mountain road, and start your vacation already set up by the lake. Delivery fees commonly run $2 to $5 per mile from the host's location, so filter by Delivery and message a few hosts to compare.

Most listings include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles at $0.25 to $0.45 each. Pro tip: ask your host about a custom mileage bundle if you're planning a multi-park loop.
nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Lake Lure to park my RV?

Emberglow Outdoor Resort offers scenic acreage in the Blue Ridge Foothills with full-hookup RV sites and creeks. Asheville East KOA Holiday in Swannanoa (about 25 miles northwest) is a top-rated park with a pool and pull-throughs. Lake Powhatan in Pisgah National Forest is a great federal option about an hour away, and Mama Gertie's Hideaway near Swannanoa offers terraced mountain sites. Book 4 to 8 weeks ahead for summer and fall foliage weekends, they fill fast.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234070When is the best time of year for an RV trip to Lake Lure?
The honest answer: Lake Lure shines three seasons of the year. Spring (April to May) brings 65 to 75°F days and the famous Flowering Bridge in full bloom. Summer (June to August) averages 80 to 87°F with warm lake swimming, ideal for families. Fall (late September through October) is the showstopper, with cool 60 to 70°F days and Blue Ridge foliage that draws visitors from across the Southeast, especially around Chimney Rock. Winters are mild but chilly (lows in the 20s to 30s°F) and many seasonal campgrounds close, though a handful stay open. Pro tip: mid-week visits in early October offer peak color without the weekend traffic.
weather.gov/gsp/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay on Lake Lure's mountain roads?
You'll be just fine, especially with the right rig and a little prep. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, and emptying tanks, so you won't be guessing. For first time renting an RV around Lake Lure, ask your host about a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer (20 to 25 feet) which handles US-64 and the curves toward Chimney Rock comfortably. Avoid narrow shortcuts like Buffalo Creek Road with bigger rigs. If you'd rather not drive at all, choose a host who offers delivery and setup at your campground. Bonus: 24/7 roadside assistance is included, so help is always one call away.
ncdot.gov/travel-maps/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue during my Lake Lure RV trip?
You are never on your own. Every RV rental in Lake Lure booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. Your host is also a quick message away for questions like resetting the generator or troubleshooting hookups. If you are stuck along US-74A or out near the Green River, call the roadside number in your booking confirmation and a local service will be dispatched. RVezy support is available around the clock too. Pro tip: snap a photo of your hookups when you arrive at the campground, it makes troubleshooting and packing up much easier.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Lake Lure RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Absolutely, multi-state RV road trips from Lake Lure are popular and easy. South Carolina (Greenville is about 60 miles south), Tennessee (Gatlinburg about 110 miles west), and Georgia are all classic loops, and most hosts welcome interstate travel. Cross-border travel into Canada may be permitted depending on the host's insurance, just confirm with them before booking and bring your passport. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: a popular 7-day loop from Lake Lure hits Asheville, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and Pigeon Forge before circling back through Hot Springs, NC for the soaking pools.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on a Lake Lure RV trip?
Fuel is one of the biggest variables, but easy to plan. Travel trailers don't burn extra gas themselves, your tow vehicle averages 10 to 14 MPG. Class C motorhomes get about 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A coaches around 6 to 10 MPG. Gas in Rutherford County typically runs slightly below the national average, with diesel a bit higher. A 4-day loop covering Lake Lure, Asheville, and the Blue Ridge Parkway (roughly 250 miles) usually costs $80 to $160 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Forest City or Rutherfordton before heading into the mountains, prices climb a bit closer to tourist hubs like Chimney Rock village.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Lake Lure?
Earlier is better, especially for fall. For peak foliage weekends in October, book Chimney Rock State Park area campgrounds 3 to 6 months ahead. Summer weekends (Memorial Day through Labor Day) usually need 6 to 10 weeks of lead time. Private parks like Hitching Post and Emberglow Outdoor Resort take reservations directly through their websites, while nearby federal sites such as Lake Powhatan in Pisgah National Forest are booked through Recreation.gov, which opens reservations 6 months out. Midweek and shoulder-season stays often have same-week openings. Pro tip: if your dates are flexible, search Sunday-to-Thursday nights and you'll find more pet-friendly availability too.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234070What are the driving conditions like around Lake Lure?
Driving around Lake Lure is scenic and very doable, just plan for mountain curves. US-64/74A from Bat Cave to Chimney Rock and Lake Lure is the main route, with two lanes, switchbacks, and grades up to 7%, so take it slow in a larger motorhome. Roads stay well maintained year-round, but fall foliage traffic on weekends can crawl through Chimney Rock village. Avoid the steep, narrow Buffalo Creek Road shortcut with rigs over 25 feet. In winter, occasional ice in the higher elevations near Hickory Nut Gap is possible, so check NCDOT's DriveNC site before heading out. Pro tip: morning drives mean lighter traffic and the best light on the gorge.
drivenc.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Lake Lure?
You'll have everything you need for a comfortable stay. Most full-service RV parks near Lake Lure, like Hitching Post Campground and Emberglow Outdoor Resort, offer 30/50-amp electric, fresh water hookups, sewer connections, on-site dump stations, hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Lake Powhatan and other Pisgah National Forest sites are more primitive with vault toilets and potable water spigots but no sewer. You can dump tanks at most private parks for $10 to $15 if you're not staying overnight, and potable water is widely available. Pro tip: the camp store at Hitching Post stocks last-minute essentials, but bigger groceries are best handled in Rutherfordton or at Ingles in Lake Lure village.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/nfsnc/recarea/?recid=48916What is included inside a typical Lake Lure RV rental?
More than you would expect. Most motorhome rental Lake Lure listings come fully equipped: real beds (queen or king in many Class A and Class C rigs), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many hosts include linens, towels, basic cookware, a TV, and sometimes a generator for boondocking near the Green River Game Lands. Cell service can be spotty in deeper coves of the lake, so download maps and shows beforehand. Pro tip: ask your host whether outdoor gear like camp chairs, a grill, or kayaks is included, many Lake Lure hosts throw in lake-ready extras at no charge.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Lure%2C%20North%20CarolinaWhat add-ons and pickup options do Lake Lure RV hosts typically offer?
Lots of fun extras to customize your trip. Common add-ons for a campervan rental Lake Lure or motorhome rental include linen and towel packs ($25 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), generators ($25 to $50/day), bikes, kayaks, paddleboards (great for the lake), outdoor chairs, and propane refills. Pickup is usually at the host's home or a meeting point near Lake Lure, Rutherfordton, or Forest City, and many hosts deliver to local campgrounds for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies typically include 100 to 150 free miles per night with extra miles at $0.25 to $0.45. Pro tip: bundling delivery + setup + kayaks turns a basic rental into a Lake Lure RV trip that feels like a full resort package.
lakelure.org/things-to-doHow does payment and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Lake Lure?
Payment is simple and fully handled through RVezy, no cash or checks to the host. You pay your trip total securely online when you book, often with a partial payment upfront if your trip is more than a few weeks out, and the balance is charged closer to pickup. A refundable security deposit is placed on hold separately before pickup and released back to you after drop-off, assuming the RV is returned in good shape and on time. Pro tip: do a quick video walkaround at pickup with your host, and another at drop-off near Lake Lure. It protects everyone and keeps the deposit return smooth.
