Campgrounds near Long View, North Carolina
Long View sits in Catawba County in the western Piedmont of North Carolina, immediately adjacent to Hickory and roughly an hour northwest of Charlotte. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers heading into the Blue Ridge foothills, with Lake Hickory to the north and the South Mountains rising to the southwest.
Campgrounds in the area range from full-hookup commercial RV parks close to Interstate 40 to state park sites deeper in the mountains. Indian Springs Campground and 321 RV Park sit near the main highway corridor and suit travelers who want quick access to town services. Buffalo Creek Campground and Green Mountain Park offer a quieter setting, while Family - South Mountains State Park provides tent and trailer sites inside a park that covers nearly 21,000 acres in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and features High Shoals Falls.
Most visitors combine a stay in the Hickory area with day trips to the Catawba River, Lake James, and hiking trails in South Mountains State Park.
Things to do near Long View
South Mountains State Park is the main outdoor draw, with an extensive trail network, the 80-foot High Shoals Falls, and equestrian and mountain-biking loops. The park is a strong choice for families with older kids who can handle rocky terrain.
Closer to town, Lake Hickory offers boat ramps, fishing, and swimming access, and the Catawba Science Center and Hickory Museum of Art give a rainy-day option. The Riverwalk in downtown Hickory works for an easy evening stroll after setting up camp.
Day-trip range covers Lake James State Park, Linville Gorge, and the Blue Ridge Parkway near Blowing Rock, each within about an hour to ninety minutes by RV or tow vehicle.

Spring and fall are the most reliable RV seasons in the North Carolina foothills. March through May brings wildflowers along South Mountains trails and comfortable daytime temperatures, though afternoon thunderstorms are common by late May. Fall color typically peaks in the surrounding mountains from mid-October into early November, and weekend sites at state parks book heavily during that window.
Summer is warm and humid, with frequent afternoon storms. Full-hookup sites with electric service become important for running air conditioning, and shaded loops fill first. Lake Hickory and river access points draw heavy local use on summer weekends.
Winter camping is possible but limited. Some private parks stay open year round with reduced services, while state park facilities may run on a reduced schedule. Occasional ice storms and brief snow events can affect mountain roads west of town, so travelers should check conditions before towing into higher elevations.

How to book campgrounds near Long View
Sites at Family - South Mountains State Park are reserved through the North Carolina State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made for today and up to six months in advance. Popular weekends, especially in October, sell out quickly, so booking as early as the window allows is recommended.
Private parks such as Indian Springs Campground, 321 RV Park, Buffalo Creek Campground, and Green Mountain Park typically accept reservations by phone or through their own websites, and some list availability on third-party RV booking platforms. Holiday weekends and fall-color weekends require the most lead time.
When booking, confirm rig-length limits, hookup type, and whether the site is back-in or pull-through, since older loops in the region often have tighter interior roads. All campers must stop at the park visitor center to register their vehicle and receive a hang tag.
What to expect
The Long View area mixes small-town Piedmont with quick access to the mountains. Expect rolling terrain, hardwood forest, and red-clay soil that can get slick after heavy rain. Cell service is generally good in town and along Interstate 40 but drops out inside South Mountains State Park.
RV-friendly grocery, propane, and dump-station services are available in Hickory. Larger big-box stores and fuel stops with truck lanes are clustered near the Highway 321 and Interstate 40 interchange.
Wildlife includes deer, black bear in the higher elevations of South Mountains, and a range of songbirds. Standard bear-aware food storage is a good habit at any campground west of town, even if the specific park does not require locking bins.

The North Carolina DMV does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes, travel trailers, or campervans rented through RVezy. RVezy approved drivers must generally be 25 or older, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during booking. Spring (mid-March through May) brings 60 to 80°F days, blooming dogwoods, and fewer crowds. Summer (June to August) is warm and muggy with highs around 87°F, perfect for Lake Hickory swimming but plan AC and shaded sites. Fall is the local favorite: September through early November delivers crisp 50 to 75°F days and Blue Ridge leaf color peaking in mid to late October. weather.gov/gsp/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You're going to do great, and Long View is actually a forgiving place for a first time renting an RV. Highways like US-70, US-321, and I-40 are wide and well-maintained, and most local hosts give a thorough 30 to 60 minute walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, holding tanks, and the propane system. You can text or call them anytime during your trip with questions. Start with a smaller Class C motorhome or a campervan rental in Long View if you're nervous, practice in a quiet parking lot, and avoid downtown Hickory's tighter side streets. Within a day, you'll feel like you've been doing this for years.

Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave, and keep the RV's registration and protection documents in the glovebox so help can reach you quickly.

nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/directions.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on my Long View RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, so it's smart to plan ahead. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, and large Class A coaches 6 to 10 MPG. With North Carolina gas prices typically running below the national average, a 200-mile round trip from Long View to Asheville and back in a Class C costs roughly $60 to $90 in fuel. Pro tips: fill up in Hickory or Conover before heading into the mountains (parkway-area stations charge more), drive 55 to 60 mph to maximize MPG, and use GasBuddy to spot cheap stations along I-40.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Long View?
Booking early is the secret to a smooth Long View RV trip, especially for popular weekends. North Carolina State Parks like South Mountains and Lake James accept reservations through the official NC State Parks reservation system up to 11 months in advance, and prime summer and fall sites can fill within minutes of release. For private parks like Lake Hickory RV Resort, aim for 2 to 4 months ahead in peak season and 2 to 3 weeks for midweek or off-season stays. Pro tip: October leaf-peeping weekends along the Blue Ridge Parkway book up by late summer, so reserve the moment you have firm dates.
northcarolinastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Long View?
Driving an RV in and around Long View is genuinely easy compared to most U.S. metro areas. The town sits right off US-70 and a few miles from I-40, both wide, flat, and RV-friendly. Watch for moderate rush-hour traffic on I-40 between Hickory and Statesville on weekday mornings and afternoons. Heading north on US-321 toward Blowing Rock, you'll hit steep mountain grades and tight curves above 3,000 feet, so use low gears on descents and check brakes before the trip. Summer afternoon thunderstorms can pop up quickly; if visibility drops, pull off at a rest area. Winter ice is rare but possible in January.
