Campgrounds and RV parks near Madison, NC

The Dan River is the region's main draw. Dan River Campground and River Adventures shares its property with a river outfitter, providing access to tubing, canoeing, and kayaking, and multiple outfitters run shuttled float trips from Madison. Anglers fish the Dan and Mayo rivers for smallmouth bass and sunfish, and several campgrounds keep stocked ponds for catch-and-release. Hanging Rock State Park is the headline hike. The park has more than 20 miles of hiking trails plus mountain bike and horse trails, with swimming and boating on the lake in season and year-round fishing on the lake and Dan River. Waterfalls, rock outcrops, and Piedmont overlooks make it a strong pick for families. Off-water options include Pilot Mountain State Park to the west, wineries in the Yadkin Valley, and the Blue Ridge Parkway within about an hour's drive.

Late spring through early fall is the core camping season. River tubing typically runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day when water temperatures are warm and outfitters are staffed. At Dan River Campground, the on-site pool is open Memorial Day to Labor Day, and swimming at Hanging Rock's lake follows the same window. Sites at private RV parks and the state park fill fastest on summer weekends and around the July 4th holiday. Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and foliage color that peaks in the Sauratown Mountains from mid-October into early November. Weekends fill faster than weekdays during peak season and fall foliage, so book ahead for October arrivals at Hanging Rock and the private parks along the Dan. Winter is quiet. Hanging Rock stays open year round for camping, but many private campgrounds shift to reduced services, and some seasonal bathhouses and pools close. Low flows can also shorten Dan River float times outside the summer outfitter window, so check operator updates before booking a river-focused trip.

Private parks near Madison lean toward classic, riverside campgrounds rather than resort-style properties. Expect gravel or grass pads, full or partial hookups at most RV sites, picnic tables, and fire rings. Dan River Campground offers RV sites with full hookups (water, 30/50A electric and sewer), partial-hookup RV sites, tent sites with water and 20A electric, and primitive tent sites. Smith River RV Park in Bassett accommodates pop-ups, tents, fifth-wheels, and camper vans, with 122 full-hookup sites offering 30/50 amp service, water, and sewer, plus riverside spots. Hanging Rock's family campground is more rustic. Sites include a fire ring and picnic table, with restrooms and hot showers in the bathhouses and a drinking station on the loop. Cell service is spotty inside the state park, so plan on offline maps.
