Camping near Marion, North Carolina
Marion sits in McDowell County at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, roughly midway between Asheville and Hickory off Interstate 40. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers heading to Lake James State Park, a reservoir with more than 150 miles of shoreline that offers swimming, boating, fishing, and lakefront tent and paddle-in campsites. Pisgah National Forest, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and Linville Gorge are all within a short drive.
Private RV parks cluster around Lake James and along the Catawba River corridor. Riverbreeze Campground, Barefoot Landing Camping Resort, The Campground at Tom Johnson Camping Center, Buck Creek RV Park, and Spacious Skies Hidden Creek cover a range of formats, from full-hookup resort sites to smaller wooded parks. Barefoot Landing Camping Resort is a gated resort covering about 65 acres with 124 seasonal RV sites and a private cove on Lake James for boating, kayaking, and fishing.
Marion itself offers grocery, fuel, and repair services, which makes provisioning between mountain trips straightforward. Asheville is under an hour west for restaurants, breweries, and larger retail.
Things to do around Marion
Lake James is the primary draw. Swim beaches, boat ramps, and paddle-in access support day trips from any of the nearby RV parks, and Lake James State Park has 14 trails totaling more than 30 miles of hiking and about 20 miles of biking access, including the Fonta Flora State Trail, Overmountain Victory Trail, and bike trails at Paddy's Creek.
North of town, Linville Gorge, Linville Falls, and the Blue Ridge Parkway put waterfalls and overlooks within a short drive. Pisgah National Forest is less than an hour from Marion and includes developed campgrounds, dispersed areas, and horse camps, though most forest sites are basic with limited or no hookups.
Closer in, families use Marion for gem mining, tubing on the Catawba River, and shorter hikes at Catawba Falls.

Spring brings variable weather and rising demand at lake sites. Nights can still drop near freezing early in the season, so travelers should pack layers and rain gear and confirm the RV heating system is working. As one of the first comfortable camping windows of the year, spring weekends fill quickly, so book well in advance.
Summer is peak season. Lake James, Pisgah, and Blue Ridge Parkway traffic all rise from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and full-hookup sites at private resorts near the lake sell out for holiday weekends months ahead. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and higher elevations along the Parkway stay noticeably cooler than town.
Fall is the strongest shoulder season. Leaf color typically peaks in mid-to-late October at Parkway elevations and slightly later around Marion. Winter camping is possible at year-round private parks, though many state and forest campgrounds close or run reduced services, and overnight temperatures often drop below freezing, so cold-weather gear is essential.
How to book RV sites near Marion
State park sites at Lake James are reserved through the North Carolina State Parks system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to six months in advance. The park offers drive-in tent sites at Paddy's Creek, walk-in sites at Catawba River, and paddle-in sites on Long Arm Peninsula, with no RV hookups, so RV travelers typically pair a day visit with a nearby private park stay.
Private parks such as Riverbreeze Campground, Barefoot Landing Camping Resort, The Campground at Tom Johnson Camping Center, Buck Creek RV Park, and Spacious Skies Hidden Creek book directly through their websites or by phone. Pisgah National Forest campgrounds within about an hour are on Recreation.gov, generally on a rolling six-month window.
For summer weekends and October foliage, book at least two to three months out. Off-season midweek stays usually have same-week availability.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Marion is rolling to steep. Sites near Lake James tend to be wooded with mixed hardwoods and pine, and back-in pads are common. Big rigs should confirm site length and approach angles before booking, especially on properties that step down toward the shoreline.
Hookup levels vary. Resort-style parks along the lake offer full hookups, pools, and boat access, while smaller parks may run water and electric only with a shared dump station. Cell coverage is generally usable in town and near I-40 but can drop in coves and hollows.
Wildlife is active, including black bears in the surrounding national forest, so food storage discipline matters. Bring layers year-round: valley temperatures and Blue Ridge Parkway temperatures can differ by 10 to 15 degrees on the same afternoon.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Marion, NC
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Marion, NC?
Good news: an RV rental in Marion, NC is one of the most affordable ways to explore the Blue Ridge Mountains. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, campervans run $125 to $200, and larger Class A or Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $300 per night. Pricing depends on the season, RV age, and amenities. To find a cheap RV rental in Marion, travel midweek, book a travel trailer with delivery instead of driving yourself, and aim for shoulder months like April or early November when Blue Ridge Parkway traffic dies down. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book to lock in great rates fast before fall foliage demand spikes.
destinationmcdowell.com/marion/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Marion, NC?
Great news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Marion, NC. North Carolina does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal RVs, including big Class A motorhomes and fifth wheels you might use along the Blue Ridge Parkway. You'll need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and we confirm your ID through the platform during checkout, so there are no surprise paperwork requests at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home-country license. That's it. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the process is, leaving more time to plan stops at Linville Falls and Lake James State Park.
ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/driver-licenses/Pages/default.aspxWhat protection is included when I book an RV in Marion?
Every RV rental in Marion booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built in, so you are covered from the moment you pull away from the host's driveway. You choose your protection level during checkout (not the host), and it covers most damage to the RV during your trip. That means whether you are winding up Highway 221 toward Linville Caverns or parked at Lake James State Park, you have real peace of mind. Coverage details and limits vary by plan, so review the options at booking to pick what fits your trip best, then focus on the Blue Ridge views ahead.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Marion RV rental?
Booking is low risk. RVezy sets a clear cancellation policy on every reservation (not the host), and it includes a grace period right after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund. After that, the refund amount depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date. If a host cancels on you, RVezy helps you rebook or refunds your payment. The takeaway: you do not need to wait for perfect certainty to lock in your Marion RV trip. Reserve the rig you want now, especially for fall foliage weekends that book out fast, and review the cancellation terms shown on your booking before you confirm.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Marion?
Yes, and Marion is one of the most dog-friendly basecamps in western North Carolina. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see hosts who welcome four-legged guests, then head out to explore. Lake James State Park allows leashed dogs on trails and at Paddy's Creek day-use areas (not in the designated swimming water), and the Joseph McDowell Historic Catawba River Greenway right in town is a flat, leashed-dog favorite. Pro tip for a pet-friendly RV rental in Marion: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and breed notes, and you are set for tail-wagging adventures.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/lake-james-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Marion?
Yes, RV delivery in Marion is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're new to RVing. Many hosts will drop the rig off at popular spots like Lake James State Park, Buck Creek RV Park, Riverbreeze Campground, or even your private vacation rental, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no towing a fifth wheel up I-40 from Asheville or backing a Class C into a tight site on your first try. Delivery fees vary by distance, so message the host with your campground address for a quote. It's the ultimate first-time renting an RV win: arrive, unpack, and start exploring.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/lake-james-state-parkHow far can I drive on a Marion RV trip, and how does mileage work?
Marion is perfectly positioned for a Blue Ridge Mountains RV trip, with most can't-miss spots within a tank of gas. Asheville is about 36 miles west via I-40 (roughly 40 minutes), Linville Falls and the Blue Ridge Parkway are about 25 miles north, Boone sits about 65 miles north, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a scenic drive of around 90 miles west. Each RVezy host sets their own daily mileage allowance, and many offer an unlimited mileage option, perfect for road-trippers planning to circle the Parkway. Check the listing's mileage policy before booking, or message the host to request an unlimited mileage add-on. Pro tip: map your driving days first so you can pick the rig with the best value for your route.

Riverbreeze Campground sits along the Catawba River with 133 spacious sites and easy I-40 access. For a resort feel, Barefoot Landing Camping Resort on Lake James has a private cove, pool, and dog park. ncparks.gov/state-parks/lake-james-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in Marion?
Marion is a true four-season RV destination, with each window offering something different. Late September through late October is the crown jewel: highs in the 60s to low 70s, crisp nights in the 40s, and unbeatable Blue Ridge Parkway fall foliage. Spring (April to early June) brings blooming rhododendron, waterfalls running full, and daytime temps in the 60s and 70s. Summer (June to August) sees highs in the mid-80s with cooler mountain evenings around 60, perfect for swimming at Lake James. Winter is mild for the mountains (highs in the 40s and 50s), and many campgrounds stay open year-round. Local insider tip: book fall weekends six months out, since leaf-peepers fill McDowell County campgrounds fast.
weather.gov/gsp/I've never rented an RV before. How does it work in Marion?
You're going to love this: first time renting an RV in Marion is genuinely easy because every RVezy host gives you a full walk-through at pickup, covering the water system, propane, slide-outs, leveling, and dump procedures. You're never handed the keys and left to figure it out. If you're nervous about driving, message hosts about delivery (many will drop the rig at your campsite), and consider starting with a smaller Class C motorhome or travel trailer rather than a 35-foot Class A. You can message any host from the listing page before booking with your questions. Pro tip for your first Marion RV trip: pick a campground close to town like Riverbreeze, so a quick grocery run is five minutes away while you find your rhythm.
fmcsa.dot.gov/safety/driver-safety/cmv-driving-tips-tire-blowoutWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are on the Blue Ridge Parkway or pulled off on US-221 near Linville Caverns. Roadside support handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified service. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app, since they know their rig inside out and can often troubleshoot small issues in minutes. Pro tip: snap a photo of your VIN and license plate at pickup and save your host's number to your favorites, so you are set if cell service gets spotty on Parkway mile markers.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trip routes from Marion?
An RV road trip from Marion practically plans itself, with the Blue Ridge Parkway running just north of town. Head north on Highway 221 to hit Linville Falls, Grandfather Mountain, and Boone (about 65 miles, two hours with stops). Drive west on I-40 to reach Asheville's breweries and the Biltmore Estate (36 miles), then continue west another 60 miles or so to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. South toward Chimney Rock and Lake Lure is a scenic 35-mile loop, and east takes you to South Mountains State Park in about an hour. Cross-border travel rules vary by host and protection plan, so message your host before booking if you are plotting a longer route.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhat kind of fuel economy and budget should I plan for?
Plan smart and you'll keep your Marion RV trip wallet-friendly. Class C motorhomes and campervans typically get 10 to 14 miles per gallon (mpg), Class A motorhomes run 7 to 10 mpg, and if you're towing a travel trailer with your own truck, expect a 3 to 5 mpg hit on your tow vehicle. Regular gas in McDowell County usually tracks close to the North Carolina state average, which has been among the lowest in the country. For a typical 4-day, 300-mile loop around Lake James and the Blue Ridge Parkway, budget around $100 to $175 in fuel. Pro tip: top up in Marion or Old Fort before heading up to the Parkway, where gas stations are scarce and pricier.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Marion?
Sooner is better, but you have more flexibility than you might think. Lake James State Park reservations open on a rolling basis through the North Carolina State Parks reservation system, and summer weekends and October dates fill up quickly, so set a calendar reminder. Private parks around Marion such as Riverbreeze Campground and Buck Creek RV Park typically take bookings several months out and often have midweek availability even in peak season. For a spontaneous Marion RV trip, target Sunday-through-Thursday stays. Pro tip: book your campground before your RVezy rental, since the campsite calendar is usually the harder piece to lock in for fall foliage weekends.
northcarolinastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What's driving an RV in and around Marion actually like?
Driving in Marion is refreshingly chill compared to bigger cities. I-40 runs right through town with wide lanes and gentle grades, US-70 and US-221 are easy two-lane mountain roads, and downtown Marion's Main Street is RV-friendly with plenty of room. The Blue Ridge Parkway is where you'll want to slow down and savor: 45 mph speed limit, no commercial traffic, and a few tunnels with clearances as low as 10 feet 6 inches, so check your RV height (most rentals are 11-12 feet) before heading up. Watch for fog above 3,000 feet elevation, especially in early morning. Pro tip: take Old NC-105 or US-221 instead of the Parkway if your rig is over 12 feet 6 inches.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/tunnel-heights.htmWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Marion?
You will be comfortable. Most full-service campgrounds near Marion, NC offer 30/50 amp electric, fresh water hookups, sewer at full-hookup sites, hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi (signal strength varies in the mountains). Lake James State Park has electric and water at most drive-to sites plus a centralized dump station, while private parks like Buck Creek RV Park and Riverbreeze Campground offer full hookups. Need to dump tanks or refill fresh water mid-trip? Many full-hookup parks will accommodate non-guests for a small fee. Pro tip: ask your RVezy host to top off the fresh water tank before delivery so you have an extra day of buffer at your site.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/lake-james-state-parkWhat features and amenities come in a typical Marion RV rental?
You will be surprised how dialed-in modern rentals are. Most motorhome rentals in Marion include a queen or king bed, a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, roof air conditioning, propane heat, a dinette that converts to extra sleeping, and seatbelts for everyone riding. Many hosts also include a generator, outdoor camp chairs, a propane grill, and basic linens. TVs and Wi-Fi hotspots are common in newer rigs, though mountain cell signal varies. Bigger Class A and Class C motorhomes often sleep 6 to 8 people comfortably, perfect for a family RV trip in Marion. Pro tip: review each listing's amenity list carefully and message the host about any must-haves like a coffee maker or pack-and-play.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Marion%2C%20North%20CarolinaWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Marion RV rental?
Hosts make it easy to customize. Common RVezy add-ons in Marion include delivery and setup (a game-changer for first-timers), generator use, propane refills, bedding and towel packages, kitchen kits, outdoor gear like camp chairs and bikes, and pet packages. Add-on prices are shown on the listing, and you will see the total before you pay. Pickup and drop-off usually happen at the host's address in or near Marion, though some hosts will meet you at I-40 exits or even at your campground for an extra fee. Mileage allowances vary by host, with many offering unlimited miles or generous daily packages perfect for an RV road trip from Marion. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a full bedding package and you essentially get a turnkey vacation home on wheels.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Marion%2C%20North%20CarolinaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform when you book (never directly to the host with cash or off-platform transfers), which keeps your booking protected. A separate security deposit hold is placed on your card before pickup to cover potential damage or extra fees like exceeding mileage or returning with dirty tanks. As long as you bring the rig back in the same condition you received it, the hold is released after your trip. Take time-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off as your own record. Pro tip: discuss propane, generator hours, and dump-station expectations during the walk-through so there are zero surprises.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Marion during winter, and what should I know?
Yes, winter RV rentals in Marion are absolutely doable and a hidden gem for travelers who love quiet trails and snowy Blue Ridge views. Daytime highs typically range from the upper 30s to low 50s, with overnight lows in the 20s and occasional snow above 3,000 feet on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Look for RVs listed as four-season or with heated holding tanks, and plan to stay at campgrounds offering shore power (50-amp electric) such as Riverbreeze or Tom Johnson Camping Center, both open year-round. Note that the Blue Ridge Parkway closes sections during ice and snow events, so use I-40 and US-221 as your reliable routes. Pro tip: message the host to confirm winter readiness and ask about extra propane, since heating burns through it fast.
