Campgrounds and RV parks near Maury, NC

The main draws are fishing, paddling, and short hikes along the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico river systems. Cliffs Of The Neuse State Park is the local landmark, with a swimming area, hiking trails, fishing areas, and a series of cliffs that rise 90 feet above the water. For water-based days, Tranters Creek Resort and Campground offers creek access with boating out toward the Pamlico. Downtown Washington, about 30 minutes away, offers a walkable waterfront, restaurants, and the North Carolina Estuarium. Families also use Maury as a base for day trips to Goldsboro, the Seymour Johnson AFB area, and Greenville for shopping, dining, and college sports at ECU.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows. March through May brings mild days, blooming dogwoods, and manageable humidity, while October and November deliver clear skies and cool nights ideal for campfires. Both shoulders offer better site availability than mid-summer. Summer is hot, humid, and buggy on the Coastal Plain, with afternoon thunderstorms common from June through August. Cliffs Of The Neuse State Park's swim beach and Tranters Creek Resort and Campground's pool are useful heat-relief options during this period. Peak bookings run from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and Cliffs of the Neuse enforces a 2-night minimum stay on Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day holiday weekends. Late summer and early fall carry tropical-system risk. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, peaking in September, and inland flooding from remnant storms has closed parts of eastern NC parks in past seasons. Winter camping is possible: Cliffs of the Neuse State Park is open year round, and private parks near Maury typically stay open with reduced amenities.

Sites in this part of eastern NC are typically level, grassy, and shaded by pine and hardwood. Cell coverage is reliable near the highways but can drop inside the state park loop. Bring insect repellent from April through October; mosquitoes and ticks are active whenever temperatures stay above freezing. At Cliffs Of The Neuse State Park, the front gate is closed and locked at posted closing times, so RVs must arrive before closing to check in. Pets are allowed at campsites on an attended leash no longer than 6 feet, but are not permitted on the swim beach, inside buildings, or in camper cabins. Alcohol is prohibited except on individual campsites, and firewood should be kiln-dried or heat-treated to prevent the spread of invasive species. Private parks in the area generally allow pets, offer full hookups, and include laundry and a camp store.
