Camping near Mayodan, North Carolina
Mayodan sits in Rockingham County in North Carolina's northern Piedmont, at the confluence of the Mayo and Dan Rivers about 30 miles north of Greensboro. The area serves as a practical base for RV travelers who want river access, state park hiking, and easy interstate connections without the crowds of the Blue Ridge.
The closest full-service option is Dan River Campground and River Adventures, a 44-acre park on the banks of the Dan River in nearby Stoneville, with RV sites offering full hookups (water, 30/50A electric and sewer), RV sites with partial hookups (water and 30A electric), tent sites with water and 20A electric, and primitive tent sites. Sunset Park Campground and Indian Heritage RV Park round out the private options close to town, while Smith River RV Park lies just over the Virginia line.
For public land, Hanging Rock State Park sits in Stokes County 30 miles north of Winston-Salem and is the region's marquee state park. Mayo River State Park, about 30 miles northwest of Greensboro, has its main Mayo Mountain access at 500 Old Mayo Park Road in Mayodan, with hiking, fishing ponds, a picnic shelter, and a primitive group campsite.
Things to do around Mayodan
Paddling drives most trips here. Dan River Campground and River Adventures sits on the Dan River, and guests can fish the on-site catch-and-release pond, use the pool, or arrange kayaking, canoeing, and tubing on the Dan through local outfitters. The Mayo River adds variety: four accesses at Deshazo Mill, Anglin Mill, Hickory Creek, and Mayodan allow entry to the river, which hosts Class II rapids.
Hiking is centered on Hanging Rock State Park. The park has trails to waterfalls and rock outcrops overlooking mountains and the piedmont, with 20+ miles of hiking, mountain bike, and horse trails, plus swimming and boating on the lake in season. Deshazo Mill also features a picturesque waterfall on Fall Creek. For rainy afternoons, downtown Madison and Mayodan offer small-town restaurants and a nearby drive-in movie theatre.

48° / 30°F 80 mmCool, occasional light snow; state park water lines winterized
The area follows a Piedmont pattern: mild shoulder seasons, hot humid summers, and cool but rarely severe winters. Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel, with comfortable daytime temperatures and lower humidity than midsummer.
Summer is peak season for river use and swimming. At Dan River Campground, the pool is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day for registered campers. Holiday weekends fill fast: North Carolina state parks apply a 2-night minimum stay on holiday weekends including Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day.
Winter operations shift. Hanging Rock's campground water spigots and restrooms and showers are turned off and winterized November through March, with a pit toilet available near campsite 55. The park sometimes closes during adverse winter weather, so campers should contact the office for updated conditions. Note also that the tent/trailer campground will be undergoing construction later this year, and all tent/trailer campsites will be available via walk-in reservations on a first-come, first-served basis until construction begins, so verify status before booking.

This was my first experience personally using an RV rental service and it could not have gone better. Zack was very helpful and accommodating with all the questions and concerns I had and I would not hesitate to rent from him again. Pick up and drop off was very flexible. The unit was very clean. Everything worked as it should.

The Rv was exactly what we needed and the owner (Jonathan) was an incredible help. Jonathan takes great care of this RV and anyone who rents it will be pleased. But please treat the RV well, because I plan on renting again in the future!!

How to book
Public campgrounds use the North Carolina State Parks reservation system, run through ReserveAmerica. For Hanging Rock, reservations must be made 1 day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 6 months in advance. Book early for fall foliage weekends and holidays, which sell out first.
Mayo River State Park offers a single primitive group site suited to organized groups. Reservations must be made 7 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 6 months in advance, and the campground is open year-round for organizations and nonprofit groups.
Private campgrounds book directly. At Dan River Campground, RV sites can be booked online through the Reservations page, while tent campsites cannot be booked online and must be arranged by email. Stays longer than 14 days cannot be completed online and require a call to the campground office. Read cancellation terms carefully before locking in holiday or race-weekend dates.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a rural Piedmont setting: mature hardwoods, red-clay soils, and river-bottom sites rather than mountain vistas. Larger, roomy campsites among mature trees and natural surroundings offer a traditional camping feel at Dan River rather than a resort layout, and most private parks in the area follow the same pattern.
Hookups vary. Dan River offers water, showers, laundry, a store, and a dump station; state park sites in this area are primitive or non-electric, and there is no dump station at Hanging Rock. Plan tank management accordingly and top off fresh water before entering state park sites in winter.
Gate hours matter. Hanging Rock's park gate runs 7 AM to 10 PM May through September, with shorter hours in the shoulder months, and the park is closed Christmas Day. The front park entrance gate locks at night, the gate combination is not given out, non-overnight guests must be out before closing, and overnight guests cannot exit until opening time. Cell coverage is uneven; download maps in advance.
