Campgrounds and RV parks near Montreat, NC

Hiking dominates the trip list. The Montreat trail network climbs to Lookout Mountain and Graybeard Mountain, and the Catawba Falls trail near Old Fort leads to a multi-tier waterfall in Pisgah National Forest. Mount Mitchell, at 6,684 feet the highest peak east of the Mississippi, is roughly a 45-minute drive north via the Blue Ridge Parkway and offers an observation deck and summit trails, though its walk-in tent campground is closed through 2026 for water line work. The Blue Ridge Parkway runs along the ridgeline nearby, with overlooks, picnic areas, and the Craggy Gardens rhododendron display within a short drive. Downtown Black Mountain offers restaurants, breweries, and outfitters, and Asheville adds the Biltmore Estate, the River Arts District, and full RV service options.

The main RV season runs spring through fall. Most private campgrounds in the area operate from spring through late fall, with Catawba Falls Campground, LLC targeting a mid-March through November season. Higher-elevation public sites along the Blue Ridge Parkway typically open in May and close by late October or early November. Asheville East KOA Holiday and Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground stay open longer, with limited winter availability at lower elevations. Spring brings rhododendron and mountain laurel blooms with cool nights. Summer is the busiest stretch for families, and mountain elevation keeps daytime temperatures moderate, with nights that stay noticeably cooler than in nearby lowlands. Fall is peak demand. Campgrounds with mountain views tend to book quickly during peak foliage from late September through October. Winter camping is possible at lower-elevation private parks but requires cold-weather prep, with overnight lows that can drop below freezing from December through February and occasional snow on higher access roads. Recovery from Hurricane Helene continues in parts of the region, so confirm status directly with each campground before booking.

Roads into mountain campgrounds are narrow and curvy, with steep grades and tight turns on many access routes. Cell service varies significantly across the region, with stronger signals at RV parks closer to Asheville and limited connectivity in more remote coves. Larger rigs should confirm site length and turning radius before booking. Full hookups are common at private parks near I-40 but rare at national forest and Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds, which typically offer only water spigots and vault or flush toilets, with no electric hookups. Most parks around Montreat welcome pets on leash. Black bears are active across the region, so food storage discipline is required. Fuel up in Black Mountain, Asheville, or Marion before heading onto the Blue Ridge Parkway, which has no gas stations along its length.
