Campgrounds near Mount Gilead
Mount Gilead sits in Montgomery County in the North Carolina Piedmont, within easy reach of the Uwharrie National Forest, Uwharrie Mountains, Lake Tillery, and Badin Lake. The town works as a practical base for RV travelers who want lake access, hiking, and family attractions without a long drive between them. Charlotte, Greensboro, and Winston-Salem all sit roughly an hour away, which makes weekend trips feasible from most of the western Carolinas.
Options close to town range from full-hookup private parks to state and national-forest campgrounds. Norwood Campground and Cotton Patch RV Campground focus on RV travelers, while Sycamore Lodge Resort and Zooland Family Campground add resort amenities and family programming. Morrow Mountain State Park sits in Stanly County, six miles east of Albemarle, and is accessible from NC highways 24/27, 73 and 740, putting a large public park within a short drive of Mount Gilead.
The surrounding Uwharries are among the oldest ranges in North America, now eroded to modest hills under 1,000 feet in elevation, which keeps grades manageable for towed rigs and Class C motorhomes.
Things to do near Mount Gilead
Water recreation drives most trips. Badin Lake offers calm water for swimming, boating, and fishing for bass, bream, crappie, and catfish, and King's Mountain Point has four accessible fishing piers, miles of shoreline, and a swimming area. Lake Tillery, on the Yadkin/Pee Dee River, adds more boat ramps and paddling water within a short drive.
On land, about 40 miles of non-motorized trails are available for horseback riding, mountain biking and hiking, as well as 17 miles of motorized trails for off-road vehicle riding in the Uwharrie National Forest. Morrow Mountain State Park adds a summit overlook, a day-use swimming pool, and horseback trails.
Families traveling with kids often pair a night at Zooland Family Campground with a visit to the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro, roughly a half-hour drive north. Town Creek Indian Mound, a state historic site, is another low-cost stop close to Mount Gilead.

Spring and fall are the strongest RV seasons. Days are mild, humidity is lower, and the hardwood canopy in the Uwharries provides shade in spring and color in October and early November. May is the wettest month in Mount Gilead, with rain on 16 days and about 77mm of precipitation, so late spring campers should plan for muddy sites and afternoon thunderstorms.
Summer is peak family season but hot. Winter temperatures range from the low 30s to upper 50s, while summer brings temperatures in the upper 80s and 90s with high humidity around Badin Lake. Full-hookup parks with pools and shade fill first. Throughout the year the Uwharrie National Forest performs prescribed burns, which can create smoky conditions near forest campgrounds on short notice.
Winter camping is possible but limited. Badin Lake Campground borders the lakeshore and offers a year-round retreat, and Canebrake Horse Camp is also open all year. Morrow Mountain's electric campsite loop typically runs from spring through late fall, so verify dates before booking a shoulder-season trip.
How to book campgrounds near Mount Gilead
Public sites use two separate reservation systems. Uwharrie National Forest sites, including Badin Lake, Arrowhead, Canebrake Horse Camp, and Badin Lake Group Camp, are booked through Recreation.gov. Reserve a site by calling (877) 444-6777 or at www.recreation.gov, and reservations can be booked up to 6 months in advance.
Morrow Mountain State Park uses the North Carolina State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made 1 day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 6 months in advance. A 2-night minimum stay applies on Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day holiday weekends.
Private parks like Norwood Campground, Cotton Patch RV Campground, and Sycamore Lodge Resort take reservations directly through their own websites. For summer weekends and fall color, book eight to twelve weeks out at private parks and hit the six-month window for public sites.
What to expect on arrival
Sites vary sharply between public and private grounds. National forest campgrounds are wooded and rustic. Badin Lake Campground has two loops of non-electric sites, some on the shore, each equipped with a table, grill, lantern post, campfire ring and tent pad, with flush toilets and showers in both loops and no dump station on site. Arrowhead Campground has electricity at sites 12 through 45, water spigots, a bathhouse with flush toilets and showers, and a dump station for RVs.
Morrow Mountain State Park's campground spreads across loops within rolling Piedmont terrain, with sites ranging from primitive tent spots to hookup RV pads. Some sites present leveling challenges due to slopes, so bring leveling blocks.
Alcohol and fireworks are prohibited at the federal campgrounds. Cell coverage is spotty in the deeper forest loops, so download maps before leaving pavement.
