Camping near Oak Ridge, North Carolina
Oak Ridge sits in the northwest Piedmont Triad, roughly between Greensboro and Winston-Salem, and puts RV travelers within a short drive of lakeside city parks, private RV parks, and Sauratown Mountain state parkland. The town itself is largely residential, so most campgrounds used by visitors are clustered in nearby High Point, Greensboro, and Stokes County.
Oak Hollow Campground is open year-round and sits within the 1,550-acre Oak Hollow Park, with many campsites bordering the shores of Oak Hollow Lake. Greensboro KOA Journey offers easy access from I-40, I-85, and other routes passing through Greensboro, with pull-through RV sites for larger rigs. Sunset Park Campground and Dan River Campground and River Adventures round out the private options, with the Dan River property geared toward paddlers and tubers.
For a state-park stay, Hanging Rock State Park lies in Stokes County about 30 miles north of Winston-Salem and offers trails leading to mountain views, rock outcrops, waterfalls, and a mountain cave, making it the closest true mountain camping to Oak Ridge.
Things to do around Oak Ridge
Hanging Rock is the marquee outdoor draw. The park has more than 20 miles of hiking trails, mountain bike trails, and horse trails, seasonal swimming and boating on the lake, year-round fishing on the lake and Dan River, and river access for paddling and tubing. Trails lead to mountain views, outcroppings, waterfalls, and a cave, and four intermediate mountain bike trails cover almost 8.5 miles of riding.
Closer to town, Oak Hollow Lake supports fishing, paddling, and boat rentals, and the surrounding park includes a golf course, tennis center, and marina. In Greensboro, families can pair a KOA stay with visits to Guilford Courthouse National Military Park and the Greensboro Science Center. The Dan River offers guided tubing and kayak trips within an hour's drive of Oak Ridge.

Spring and fall are the sweet spots for the Piedmont. Days are mild, foliage is either budding or turning, and campgrounds are open but not yet at peak crowd levels. Fall is widely considered the best time to visit Hanging Rock, with leaves changing in October and long views from the rock outcrops, so weekends book out early.
Summer runs hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Lake swimming and pool access peak in this window: swimming at the Hanging Rock lake is permitted between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend during operational hours, and the Oak Hollow outdoor pool runs on a similar Memorial Day to Labor Day schedule. Reserve early for holiday weekends, since state park rules require a two-night minimum on Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends.
Winter is the quiet season. Oak Hollow and the Greensboro KOA operate year-round, but state park facilities scale back. At Hanging Rock, campground water spigots and restrooms and showers are turned off and winterized November through March, with a pit toilet available near campsite 55 during that period. Cabins remain open with water year-round.

This was my first experience personally using an RV rental service and it could not have gone better. Zack was very helpful and accommodating with all the questions and concerns I had and I would not hesitate to rent from him again. Pick up and drop off was very flexible. The unit was very clean. Everything worked as it should.

How to book campsites in the area
Booking channels differ by operator. Hanging Rock and other North Carolina state parks use the state's ReserveAmerica-powered system: non-electric campsites can be reserved for today and up to six months in advance, and family cabins must be booked at least one day ahead of arrival. Holiday weekends carry a two-night minimum on Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day, with a one-night minimum allowed only if the booking is made within 14 days of arrival.
Greensboro KOA Journey books directly through KOA.com or the KOA app. Oak Hollow Campground reservations go through the City of High Point or Campspot. For Dan River Campground and River Adventures and Sunset Park Campground, reserve directly with the property, especially for summer weekends when paddling trips fill up.
Oak Hollow requires check-in by 7:30 p.m., and late check-in is not permitted, so plan drive times accordingly.
What to expect on site
Site style varies widely. Oak Hollow Campground has 107 RV sites with full hook-ups and 13 tent platforms, plus a swimming pool, two bathhouses, and an on-site camp store. Greensboro KOA supports larger rigs, offers full hookups and Wi-Fi, and has a dog park and a seasonal pool. Reviewers consistently flag interstate noise at the KOA, so requesting a site further back can help.
State park camping is more rustic. Hanging Rock has 73 family campsites across two loops suitable for tents, trailers, and RVs, plus rustic cabins and five group sites, with amenities including a drinking-water station and restrooms with hot showers. There is no electricity at any campsite and no dump station, so arrive with tanks empty and batteries charged.
Pets are welcome at all listed campgrounds when leashed.

Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Oak Ridge for virtually every rig on the platform. North Carolina does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for recreational vehicles under 26,000 pounds, which covers every campervan, travel trailer, and Class C motorhome you'll find here. You'll just need to be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Grab an International Driving Permit from your home country before you fly in and you're set to roll.
ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/driver-licenses/commercial/Pages/default.aspxIs RV rental in Oak Ridge protected if something goes wrong?
Yes. Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can book your Oak Ridge RV trip with real peace of mind. Plans change, and RVezy makes it low-risk to lock in your Oak Ridge RV rental. Every booking is backed by the standard RVezy cancellation policy, which includes a grace period right after booking when you can cancel for a full refund. Cancellation terms are set by RVezy, not by individual hosts, so the process is consistent across every listing. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds the booking or provides travel credits. Pro tip: book early to lock in your top-choice rig, knowing the grace-period window lets you reconsider shortly after confirming.

Some hosts charge a small pet cleaning fee, which is disclosed upfront on the listing. ncparks.gov/state-parks/hanging-rock-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to me in Oak Ridge?
Yes. RV delivery Oak Ridge is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters. Many hosts in the Triad area will drive the RV directly to your campground, a friend's driveway in Oak Ridge or Summerfield, or popular nearby spots like Hagan-Stone Park, set it up with leveling and hookups, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter to see hosts who offer this service. Delivery fees are typically based on mileage from the host's location. Pro tip: delivery is a game changer if you are nervous about towing a trailer or navigating a 30-foot motorhome for the first time.

weather.gov/rah/I have never rented an RV before. Will I know what to do?
First time renting an RV in Oak Ridge? You are in great hands. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup or delivery, covering the generator, slide-outs, water systems, propane, leveling, and how to dump tanks. They will share their phone number so you can text questions mid-trip, and RVezy customer support is available to help. Most first-timers in the Triad start with a Class C motorhome or a small travel trailer, which drive much like a large SUV. Pro tip: pick a short shakedown trip first, like one night at Hagan-Stone Park, before committing to a week-long Blue Ridge Parkway loop.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002193533-RentersWhat happens if the RV breaks down on my trip?
You are covered. Every Oak Ridge RV rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on I-40 or a battery hiccup near Pilot Mountain will not end your trip. One call connects you with help for towing, tire service, battery jumps, lockouts, and fuel delivery. Your host is also just a text away to troubleshoot small items like a fridge switch or a finicky awning. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you leave the host's driveway, and take time-stamped pickup photos so any roadside call goes smoothly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008954-Roadside-assistance-coverageCan I take my Oak Ridge RV rental across state lines?
Yes. Interstate road trips are one of the best parts of an Oak Ridge RV trip. You are under 90 minutes from the Virginia border, about 3 hours from Tennessee's Great Smoky Mountains, and roughly 4 hours from Myrtle Beach, SC. Popular multi-state routes from Oak Ridge include the Blue Ridge Parkway loop into Virginia, the Smokies via Asheville, and a Charleston coastal run. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. If you are considering Canada, message the host directly, since some are open to it with advance notice. Pro tip: share your full route with your host at booking so they can confirm everything works for the rig.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much fuel will my Oak Ridge RV trip use?
Budgeting fuel for your Oak Ridge RV rental is easy once you know the numbers. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A rigs run 6 to 9 MPG, and a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer typically gets 10 to 14 MPG. Greensboro-area gas prices generally track the North Carolina state average, so check AAA before you go to estimate fuel for your route. A 300-mile weekend in a Class C usually runs $80 to $130 in fuel depending on current prices. Pro tip: warehouse-club stations like Costco on Bridford Parkway in Greensboro and Sam's Club on Pleasant Ridge Road often beat retail prices, so fill up before heading north toward the mountains.
gasprices.aaa.com/?state=NCHow far in advance should I book a campground near Oak Ridge?
For the best campgrounds near Oak Ridge, book as early as you can. North Carolina State Parks like Hanging Rock and Pilot Mountain open reservations months in advance through the NC State Parks reservation system, and prime weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and October leaf weekends) often fill within hours. Private parks like Greensboro KOA and Oak Hollow typically need 4 to 8 weeks for summer weekends. Holiday weekends often carry a 2-night minimum at state parks. Pro tip: if you miss your dream date, set a free cancellation alert, since cancellations happen constantly, especially within 14 days of arrival.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/hanging-rock-state-park/campingWhat are the local driving conditions like around Oak Ridge?
Driving conditions around Oak Ridge are friendly for RVs: rolling Piedmont terrain, well-maintained roads, and easy access to I-40, I-73, and I-840 (the Greensboro Urban Loop). Within Oak Ridge, NC-150 and Oak Ridge Road are wide and flat. Heading west toward the Blue Ridge, expect steeper grades and tighter curves past Wilkesboro, so take it slow and use lower gears on descents. Summer brings occasional pop-up thunderstorms, and winter ice storms (typically January and February) are rare but possible. Pro tip: check clearances on your route in a tall rig, since some historic underpasses in downtown Greensboro are under 11 feet.
ncdot.gov/travel-maps/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Oak Ridge?
Campgrounds around Oak Ridge run the full spectrum. Greensboro KOA and Oak Hollow Campground offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and dump stations. Hagan-Stone Park has electric and water sites plus a central dump station. Hanging Rock State Park offers mostly non-electric sites with limited hookups, and water service is reduced in winter months. Most parks have hot showers, fire rings, and picnic tables. Pro tip: if you are staying at Hanging Rock, dump and refill water at the Greensboro KOA or a Flying J truck stop on I-85 before heading up.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/hanging-rock-state-park/campingWhat features come with an RV rental in Oak Ridge?
Most motorhome rental Oak Ridge options come well equipped. Standard features on Class C and Class A rigs include a queen or king bed, full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), wet or dry bathroom with shower, a dinette that converts to a bed, roof A/C, furnace, generator, and seatbelts for travel. Many include a TV, outdoor speakers, and basic kitchen kits. Travel trailers and campervans have similar features scaled to size. Pro tip: review the listing's amenities list closely for items like a built-in inverter (for boondocking) and propane levels, and message the host about bringing your own linens versus adding a linens package.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oak%20Ridge%2C%20NCWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Oak Ridge RV rental?
Hosts offering campervan rental Oak Ridge and larger motorhomes typically offer optional add-ons: bed linens and towels, camp chairs and outdoor tables, extra generator hours, bikes, propane refills, and pet packages. Pickup is usually from the host's location in Oak Ridge, Summerfield, Stokesdale, or Greensboro, with delivery available for an additional fee. Mileage policies range from 100 miles per day to unlimited, set per listing. Pro tip: ask about a linens and kitchen kit bundle, which is one of the most useful add-ons for first-time renters and saves a long packing list.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oak%20Ridge%2C%20NCHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment for your rent an RV in Oak Ridge booking happens securely through the RVezy platform, never directly to the host. You pay the rental total and protection plan at checkout with a credit or debit card. A separate security deposit is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup and released after the trip, assuming no damage or extra fees such as mileage overages or late return. Pro tip: take a thorough walk-around video at pickup and dropoff, since time-stamped photos protect both you and the host and make deposit release smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Oak Ridge in winter?
Yes. A winter RV rental in Oak Ridge is a quiet, beautiful option, and Piedmont winters are mild compared to most of the country. Average January highs sit around 45 degrees F with lows near 30 degrees F, so freezing nights are common but rarely severe. Look for listings that mention heated and enclosed tanks, a propane furnace, and 30-amp shore power compatibility, and confirm cold-weather use with your host. Note that some state-park campgrounds reduce water service in winter, so plan to fill your fresh tank before arrival. Pro tip: a winter trip to the Yadkin Valley wineries about an hour west is a hidden-gem family RV trip Oak Ridge experience, with fewer crowds, lower rates, and tasting rooms with fire pits.
