Camping near Old Fort, North Carolina
Old Fort sits at the eastern foot of the Blue Ridge in McDowell County, roughly 30 minutes east of Asheville on I-40. The town serves as a practical staging point for RV travellers heading into the Grandfather Ranger District of Pisgah National Forest, with Catawba Falls, whose 205-foot Upper Falls and 80-foot Lower Falls are reached by a 1.5-mile trail upgraded in 2024 with a staircase, three overlooks, and a 60-foot observation tower, Kitsuma Peak, and the growing Old Fort Gateway trail system all within a short drive.
Campground options in the area range from full-hookup private parks to more rustic sites tucked against creeks and forest boundaries. Sky Island Retreat And Campground, Catawba Falls Campground, LLC, Old Fort RV Park, Mountain Stream RV Park, and The Campground at Tom Johnson Camping Center give renters a spread of choices, from wooded mountain retreats to larger service-oriented parks along the I-40 corridor.
Elevations in the immediate area run roughly a thousand to three thousand feet, which keeps summer nights cooler than the Piedmont and puts several trout streams, waterfalls, and Blue Ridge Parkway access points within easy reach of a home base in town.
Things to do around Old Fort
Waterfall hiking is the signature activity. The Catawba Falls trail follows the scenic headwaters of the Catawba River past historic remnants of a 1920s hydropower dam to a cascading waterfall, with a staircase and observation tower installed as part of a recent rebuild. The entire Catawba Falls loop trail is open, though the upper viewing platform and Wildflower Trail remain closed following Hurricane Helene.
Kitsuma Peak offers a well-known ridge hike and mountain-bike descent, and the Old Fort Gateway trail network continues to expand with new purpose-built singletrack. Trout anglers fish Curtis Creek and Newberry Creek, with handicapped access available on Curtis Creek, plus other wild-trout streams in the surrounding national forest.
Beyond the trails, the small downtown along Catawba Avenue and Main Street has added a brewery, coffee shop, and lunch spots useful for a rest day between hikes.

Late spring through early fall is the core RV season. May through September delivers the most reliable warm, mostly dry camping weather. July, recording an average high temperature of about 84°F and a low near 62°F, is Old Fort's warmest month, with cooler nights than the Piedmont thanks to the elevation.
Autumn is a strong secondary season. September is the month with the least rainfall in Old Fort, with about 1.5 inches of precipitation, and October brings hardwood colour across the Grandfather Ranger District. Weekends around peak leaf change fill up early at private parks, and Blue Ridge Parkway access points can be crowded midday.
Winter is cool rather than harsh. January is the coldest month, with an average high near 44°F and an average low around 28°F. Snowfall occurs from November through April, with roughly 12 snowfall days a year and about 11 inches of accumulation, mostly in short events. Approximately 40 miles of trails remain closed on the Grandfather Ranger District, including multiple trails in the Old Fort area, so renters should check the U.S. Forest Service page before finalizing a route.

How to book an RV site near Old Fort
Private RV parks in the Old Fort area, including Sky Island Retreat And Campground, Catawba Falls Campground, LLC, Old Fort RV Park, Mountain Stream RV Park, and The Campground at Tom Johnson Camping Center, are booked directly through each park. Summer weekends and October leaf season sell out first, so reserve early and confirm rig-length and hookup limits when you book.
National-forest campgrounds in the surrounding Grandfather Ranger District, such as Curtis Creek, are reserved through Recreation.gov on a rolling six-month window. Curtis Creek has three loops with 25 sites, and one loop is fully accessible and can accommodate RVs up to 35 feet.
Before travel, verify current status with the Forest Service, since Helene-related closures still affect select roads, trails, and recreation sites in the district.
What to expect on the ground
The terrain is genuinely mountainous. The gravel access road to Curtis Creek winds through Pisgah National Forest for several miles, crossing two narrow one-lane bridges that require careful navigation for larger RVs, so long fifth-wheels and Class A rigs should confirm road suitability and length limits before booking. Private parks closer to I-40 and US-70 are easier for big rigs.
Cell service drops about 15 minutes before reaching remote forest campgrounds, and Old Fort is the nearest town for groceries and supplies, with additional services in nearby Marion and Black Mountain. Download offline maps before heading into the forest.
Expect afternoon thunderstorms in summer, cool nights year-round at elevation, and bear activity. Vault toilets, drinking water pumps, and bear-proof trash and recycling receptacles are provided at forest sites like Curtis Creek, and food should be stored in hard-sided vehicles when lockers are not available.

On RVezy, you can expect travel trailers to start around $90 to $140 per night, Class C motorhomes from $180 to $260, and larger Class A rigs from $250 to $400. destinationmcdowell.com/old-fort/What license do I need to rent an RV in Old Fort?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular North Carolina driver's license (or any valid US or Canadian license) is all you need to rent an RV in Old Fort. No commercial driver's license or special motorhome endorsement is required for any RV on the RVezy platform, including Class A motorhomes. You'll just need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the booking platform so there's no paperwork at pickup. Visiting from overseas? Pick up an International Driving Permit from your home auto club before you fly in. Then it's just a quick host walkthrough at pickup and you're on your way toward Catawba Falls.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Old Fort RV trip?
Booking is low risk. RVezy applies a standardized cancellation policy to every reservation, including a grace period after booking when you can cancel for a full refund. After that, your refund amount depends on how close you are to your trip start date. Hosts do not set their own cancellation rules, so you get consistent terms no matter which rig you book for your RV rental in Old Fort. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or helps you rebook with travel credit. Pro tip: book early in the season to lock in the best motorhome rental in Old Fort while the calendar is wide open.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an Old Fort RV rental?
Absolutely, and the Blue Ridge is one of the most dog-friendly regions in the state. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to find a pet-friendly RV rental in Old Fort in seconds. Many local hosts welcome dogs, and the trails around town are perfect for them: the Point Lookout Trail is a paved route ideal for leashed pups, and Lake James State Park allows leashed dogs on every trail. Most area campgrounds, including Old Fort RV Park and Spacious Skies Bear Den, are pet-friendly. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee, then pack a tie-out and a towel for after Catawba River swims.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/lake-james-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Old Fort?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to start your trip, especially if it's your first time renting an RV. Many Old Fort hosts offer RV delivery to nearby campgrounds like Old Fort RV Park, Spacious Skies Bear Den, or Lake James State Park. They'll tow or drive the rig to your site, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before handing you the keys. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see hosts offering this service and their delivery radius. Pro tip: delivery is gold if you're flying into Asheville Regional Airport (AVL), just 30 minutes west. Skip the rental car and meet your RV right at the campground.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/lake-james-state-parkHow far can I drive on an Old Fort RV trip?
You've got real range from Old Fort, with Asheville just 25 miles west, Great Smoky Mountains National Park about 80 miles southwest, Boone roughly 75 miles north, Charlotte 100 miles east, and Linville Falls 40 miles up the Blue Ridge Parkway. Each host sets their own mileage policy, with many offering 100 to 150 free miles per day and some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect if you're planning a longer Blue Ridge loop. You'll see the exact mileage allowance right on every listing before you book. Pro tip: for a classic week-long RV road trip from Old Fort, plan an Asheville to Cherokee to Pisgah Forest loop and look specifically for unlimited-mileage listings.
nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Old Fort, NC?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Old Fort include Old Fort RV Park on Parker Padgett Road with full 30/50-amp concrete pads year-round, Buck Creek RV Park with 74 creekside sites open April through November, Mountain Stream RV Park with pull-through sites and trout fishing out your door, and Black Mountain Campground in Pisgah National Forest for those who want to wake up at the base of Mount Mitchell. Lake James State Park is just 20 minutes east for water-view sites. Pro tip: for RV camping in Old Fort during October leaf season, book at least three months ahead, especially for the Pisgah Forest sites that fill up the second they release on Recreation.gov.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234064When is the best time of year for an Old Fort RV trip?
You can enjoy Old Fort almost year-round, but the sweet spots are mid-April through early June (wildflowers, 65 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit, fewer crowds) and mid-September through late October (cool nights, fiery foliage along the Blue Ridge Parkway). Summer brings highs in the low 80s with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, which is actually pleasant compared to the lowland heat. Winter dips into the 20s and 30s overnight with occasional snow, but the Old Fort RV Park stays open year-round if you want a quiet shoulder-season getaway. Pro tip: peak leaf color around Old Fort typically hits the third week of October, the absolute best time to rent an RV in North Carolina mountains.
weather.gov/gsp/I've never driven an RV before. Is Old Fort a good place to start?
Old Fort is genuinely beginner-friendly. Your host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup covering the propane, slide-outs, water system, generator, and driving tips, so you're never left guessing. Most rental trips from Old Fort use I-40 (wide, four lanes) or US-70 to reach campgrounds, both very RV-friendly. If you're nervous about mountain driving, stick to lower elevations like Lake James (20 minutes east) for your first night and save the Blue Ridge Parkway switchbacks for day two. Many hosts also offer delivery, which means zero driving stress for first-timers. Pro tip: book a smaller Class C or campervan for your first family RV trip in Old Fort. They drive like an oversized van.
ncdot.gov/travel-maps/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the renter protection plan, so whether you have a flat on the climb up to Mount Mitchell or a dead battery at Curtis Creek Campground, one phone call gets help dispatched. Your host is also just a message away through the RVezy app for quick questions like how to reset the inverter, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: cell service can be spotty in the deeper Pisgah National Forest sites, so screenshot the roadside assistance number from your confirmation email before you leave I-40.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips from Old Fort, NC?
You're sitting on a road tripper's dream. A classic RV road trip from Old Fort might run west along the Blue Ridge Parkway to Asheville and the Biltmore Estate (25 miles), then continue to Pisgah National Forest and Brevard (55 miles). Northbound, you can reach Linville Falls (40 miles), Grandfather Mountain (60 miles), and Boone (75 miles). South leads to Lake Lure and Chimney Rock (35 miles), while east takes you to Lake James State Park (20 miles) or all the way to Charlotte (100 miles). Pro tip: the Parkway has tunnels with height restrictions as low as 10 feet 6 inches. Check your RV height and the NPS tunnel list before committing to a Parkway leg.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/tunnel-heights.htmWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Budgeting is easy when you know the numbers. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 mpg, Class A coaches run 6 to 10 mpg, and a travel trailer pulled by a tow vehicle gets roughly 10 to 14 mpg. Gas stations in Old Fort along US-70 and the I-40 exits are easy to find, and prices in McDowell County typically run slightly below the national average. For a 500-mile Blue Ridge loop in a Class C, plan on around $200 to $275 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Marion (10 minutes east) before climbing the Parkway, where stations are scarce and pricier once you're on top of the mountain.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Old Fort?
Book early and you will have your pick of the best spots for RV camping in Old Fort. For Pisgah National Forest sites like Black Mountain Campground and Curtis Creek through Recreation.gov, the booking window opens six months ahead and prime weekends can sell out quickly. Lake James State Park reservations open through the NC State Parks reservation system and fill quickly for summer and October. Private parks like Old Fort RV Park or Spacious Skies Bear Den are more flexible, but still aim for two to three months ahead for fall foliage. Pro tip: weekday arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) are far easier to book and less crowded on the trails.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234064What are the driving conditions like around Old Fort?
Driving here is straightforward as long as you respect the mountains. Interstate 40 between Asheville and Old Fort climbs a steep section known as Old Fort Mountain, with grades up to 6 percent and runaway truck ramps, so downshift on the descent and never ride your brakes. US-70 through downtown Old Fort is flat and easy. The Blue Ridge Parkway is gorgeous but slow (45 mph limit), with tight curves, no shoulders, and several low tunnels. Watch for fog above 3,000 feet, especially mornings. In winter, the Parkway closes regularly for ice. Pro tip: avoid I-40 westbound on Sunday afternoons in October when leaf-peepers head home from the mountains. Bumper-to-bumper crawl from Asheville to Old Fort is real.
drivenc.gov/What amenities do campgrounds near Old Fort offer?
You'll find a great range of options. Old Fort RV Park has full 30/50-amp hookups, sewer, water, high-speed Wi-Fi, laundry, and hot showers on every concrete site. Lake James State Park provides electric and water hookups plus a centralized dump station and bathhouse. Pisgah National Forest campgrounds like Black Mountain and Curtis Creek are more rustic with pit or flush toilets, drinking water, and fire rings, but no hookups, so plan to use your generator and tanks. Dump stations are available at Old Fort RV Park and Lake James State Park if you're staying somewhere primitive. Pro tip: fill your fresh water in Old Fort before heading up to Pisgah Forest sites, where potable water can be seasonal or shut off.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/lake-james-state-park/campingWhat's included inside the RV I rent in Old Fort?
Local rentals come ready to camp. Most Old Fort RVs include a fully equipped kitchen (stove, fridge, microwave, sink, cookware, dishes), a bathroom with toilet and shower, comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on the rig, climate control (furnace and AC), and seatbelts for travel. Class C and Class A motorhomes typically include a TV, and many hosts include Wi-Fi hotspots or onboard generators, useful at unhooked sites like Curtis Creek Campground. Bedding and kitchen kits are often available as add-ons. Pro tip: each RVezy listing has a detailed amenities checklist, so you'll know exactly what's onboard before booking your campervan rental in Old Fort. Add a generator if you plan to boondock in Pisgah National Forest.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/nfsnc/recarea/?recid=48114What add-ons and pickup options are available?
Hosts in Old Fort offer plenty of ways to customize your trip. Common add-ons include linen and towel packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits, outdoor camp chairs and tables, portable grills, generators, bike racks, and pet packages. Many hosts offer delivery to nearby campgrounds for a flat fee based on mileage, plus pickup and setup so you arrive to a ready-to-camp site. Pickup is usually a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough at the host's location, and dropoff includes a quick inspection. Mileage policies vary, with most hosts including 100 to 150 free miles per day and additional miles at $0.30 to $0.45 each. Pro tip: ask the host about a propane-included add-on for cold-weather trips when the furnace runs all night.
destinationmcdowell.com/old-fort/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book on RVezy, you pay the trip total (rental, fees, and your chosen protection plan) right through the platform using a credit or debit card. Your host never sees your card details. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment, typically a few days before pickup, and released after return assuming no damage. Avoid issues by walking through the RV with your host at pickup and dropoff and snapping photos of any existing scratches or dings. Pro tip: keep all communication and payments inside the RVezy app so the protection plan and dispute support stay in effect for your North Carolina RV rental.
