Campgrounds and RV parks near Oxford, NC

Water activities dominate the region. Kerr Lake is a well-known bass, catfish, and crappie fishery, and the reservoir supports boating, water skiing, paddling, and swimming, with public swim beaches at multiple access areas. Marinas at Satterwhite Point and Hibernia handle fuel, slips, and rentals for visitors without their own boat. Falls Lake offers a similar mix on a smaller footprint, with designated swim beaches at Holly Point, Rolling View, Beaverdam, and Sandling Beach. Neither park posts lifeguards. On land, both parks maintain wooded hiking trails, picnic shelters, and playgrounds, and a long segment of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail runs through Falls Lake. Falls Lake is a known monarch butterfly corridor in spring and fall. Oxford itself provides groceries and fuel, and the Raleigh-Durham metro is close enough for a day trip when families want a break from the lake.

The main camping season in the Oxford area runs from spring through fall. Most Kerr Lake and Falls Lake campgrounds operate on a seasonal schedule, with several loops closed in winter, though a handful of Kerr Lake areas including Nutbush, JC Cooper, and Satterwhite Point traditionally stay open year-round. Spring brings mild days, blooming dogwoods, and steady rainfall; it is a good window for anglers and for travelers who want cooler nights and lighter crowds. Summer is peak season. Days are hot and humid, thunderstorms are common in the afternoons, and weekend sites at the popular campgrounds fill weeks in advance around Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. Both parks apply two-night minimums on those holiday weekends. Kerr Lake charges per-vehicle entry fees on weekends and holidays in April, May, and September, and daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Fall cools off after early October and delivers reliable dry stretches, foliage in the surrounding hardwoods, and the lightest bug pressure of the year. Ongoing wastewater and campground upgrades at both parks mean specific loops may be closed in any given season, so confirm status before booking.

Sites at both Kerr Lake and Falls Lake are wooded, mostly back-in, and generously sized, so full-size travel trailers and Class C rigs fit without much trouble. Electric hookups are common; full sewer hookups are not offered at the state park sites. Both parks have dump stations, and at Holly Point 89 of the 158 sites include water and 50/30-amp electric hookups, with modern bathhouses and hot showers within walking distance. Roads into the recreation areas are paved and free of steep grades or switchbacks, which keeps arrival straightforward for first-time RV renters. Gates lock at posted closing times, so plan to arrive before then. Pets are allowed on leash at campsites but not on swim beaches or inside buildings. State park rules prohibit alcohol, and collecting firewood from the ground is not permitted; firewood is sold at the parks. The posted speed limit inside both parks is 25 mph.
