Camping near Pilot Mountain, North Carolina
Pilot Mountain sits in Surry County in North Carolina's northern Piedmont, roughly 20 miles northwest of Winston-Salem. The town takes its name from the quartzite knob that rises abruptly more than 2,000 feet above the surrounding countryside, a landmark visible for miles and the centerpiece of Pilot Mountain State Park. Most RV travelers use the town as a base for hiking, rock climbing, and paddling the Yadkin River.
Campground options within a short drive cover the full range. Pilot Mountain State Park operates a 42-site family campground on the lower slopes of the mountain, while Greystone RV Park and Jomeokee Campground offer private sites with full or partial hookups. Arrarat River Campground and Homeplace Recreational Park Inc. add further options a bit farther out.
The area is also within easy reach of Mount Airy, the Yadkin Valley wine region, and Hanging Rock State Park, giving renters a wide radius of day trips from a single base.
Things to do near Pilot Mountain
The main draw is Pilot Mountain State Park itself. The summit area reaches Little Pinnacle Overlook, and a trail network connects the mountain section to the Yadkin River section via a 6.5-mile corridor trail. Rock climbing and rappelling are permitted on designated cliffs, and the Mountains-to-Sea State Trail passes through both park sections.
The Yadkin River section offers flatwater paddling, fishing, and a bridle trail. Horse trailer parking is available at the Pinnacle Hotel Road/Culler Road and Hauser Road lots. Off-park, families often add a day trip to downtown Mount Airy, the Yadkin Valley wineries, or the waterfalls at Hanging Rock State Park to the east.

December - February
47° / 31°F 84 mmState park campground closed; paddle-in sites open
The Pilot Mountain State Park family campground operates on a seasonal schedule, running from March 15 through November 30 and closing December through mid-March. The two paddle-in campsites at the Ivy Bluffs access on the Yadkin River stay open year-round, but they have no potable water and campers must pack out all trash.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV camping, with mild days, cool nights, and lower humidity. Fall color typically peaks in mid to late October and drives the busiest weekends of the year on the mountain. Summer brings warm, humid conditions and afternoon thunderstorms, along with heavier day-use crowds and expected delays at the entrance gate on weekends and holidays.
Winter camping in the area is limited to private parks and the paddle-in sites. Snow is occasional rather than heavy, but freezing overnight lows are routine and some park facilities scale back.
How to book a campsite
Sites at Pilot Mountain State Park are booked through the North Carolina State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. The booking window opens up to six months in advance, and same-day reservations are also allowed when sites are available. Note that the state park campground has no electrical hookups and no dump station, so RV renters who need full utilities should look to private options.
Greystone RV Park, Jomeokee Campground, Arrarat River Campground, and Homeplace Recreational Park Inc. each take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Fall weekends and holidays fill early at every property in the area, so booking six to eight weeks out is prudent for October dates.
What to expect on-site
At Pilot Mountain State Park, each site includes a tent pad, picnic table, and fire grill, with two central bathhouses providing hot showers and flush toilets. Drinking water is available throughout the campground, but there are no hookups or dump station. Firewood is sold by the campground host, and pets are allowed on a leash no longer than six feet. Some driveways are short or uneven, so RV renters should check site dimensions on ReserveAmerica before booking.
Private parks in the area typically offer 30/50-amp full hookups, bathhouses, and laundry, with pull-through sites that can accommodate larger rigs. Amenities vary by property, so confirm rig length limits and dump station availability directly with the operator before arrival.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Pilot Mountain, NC
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Pilot Mountain, NC?
RV rental in Pilot Mountain is one of the most affordable ways to experience the Sauratown Mountains. Travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run $175 to $275, and larger Class A rigs can reach $300 or more. Because hosts set their own pricing, you can find cheap RV rental options in Pilot Mountain by booking midweek, traveling in the shoulder seasons of late March or early November, and choosing a smaller travel trailer if you do not need to drive a motorized rig. Pro tip: filter for hosts offering weekly discounts if you are planning to base out of Pilot Mountain State Park's 49-site family campground for a longer stay.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Pilot%20Mountain%2C%20North%20CarolinaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Pilot Mountain, NC?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Pilot Mountain, North Carolina. The state does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) for non-commercial RVs, which covers virtually every motorhome, travel trailer, and campervan listed on RVezy. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and ID verification happens quickly through the platform when you book. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you are set. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the process is, especially for the easy drive up US-52 to Pilot Mountain State Park.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection or insurance is included with my RV rental in Pilot Mountain?
Every RVezy booking in Pilot Mountain automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can pull into your campsite at Pilot Mountain State Park with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damages to the RV during your trip, and you (not the host) choose your coverage level during the booking process, picking the plan that matches how adventurous your itinerary is. Pro tip: if you are planning to explore rural gravel roads near the Yadkin River section of the park, the higher-tier protection plan is worth the small upgrade for total confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Pilot Mountain RV trip plans change?
You can book with confidence: RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy for every rental, and it includes a full money-back grace period after booking so you are not locked in the moment you reserve. The exact refund depends on how far in advance you cancel, which matters in the Piedmont where summer thunderstorms or winter ice can occasionally disrupt plans. If a host needs to cancel, RVezy refunds guests or provides travel credits so you are not left stranded. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Pilot Mountain rigs for fall foliage weekends, knowing you have flexibility if your schedule shifts.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Pilot Mountain?
Absolutely, your dog is welcome on the trail. Pilot Mountain State Park allows pets at all campsites and on every trail as long as they're on a leash no longer than six feet, which makes a pet-friendly RV rental in Pilot Mountain a perfect choice for dog families. On RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to instantly see hosts who welcome four-legged guests. Many hosts even leave a bowl or blanket for your pup. After a hike to Big Pinnacle or Little Pinnacle Overlook, your dog will love splashing in the Yadkin River at the park's river section. Pro tip: pack a tick check kit, since the wooded campground sits in classic Piedmont tick habitat.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/pilot-mountain-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite at Pilot Mountain State Park?
Yes, RV delivery in Pilot Mountain is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if you're new to RVing. Many RVezy hosts in the Mount Airy, Winston-Salem, and King area will drive the rig straight to your reserved site at Pilot Mountain State Park's family campground (off US-52, exit 27), set up the awning and slide-outs, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no white-knuckle driving up Pilot Knob Park Road for first-timers. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts offering this service. Pro tip: ask your host about delivery to nearby Hanging Rock State Park too, a popular add-on stop just 30 minutes east.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/pilot-mountain-state-park/mapsHow does mileage work, and how far can I drive on a Pilot Mountain RV trip?
Hosts on RVezy set their own mileage policies, and many Pilot Mountain listings include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage for road-trippers. That's plenty for the easy day trips most guests plan: Winston-Salem is just 24 miles south, Mount Airy (the real-life Mayberry) is 14 miles north, and Stone Mountain State Park is about 45 miles west. Heading to the Blue Ridge Parkway via Fancy Gap, VA? That's about 30 miles up US-52. Pro tip: if you're planning a longer loop through Asheville (165 miles southwest) or the Outer Banks, message the host before booking to negotiate a mileage package that fits your route.
ncdot.gov/travel-maps/Pages/default.aspxWhere are the best campgrounds near Pilot Mountain, NC for RV camping?
You've got great options for RV camping in Pilot Mountain within a short drive. Pilot Mountain State Park Family Campground has 49 wooded sites with potable water, hot showers, and a few level pull-throughs (sites 2, 28, and 30 are best for RVs); note there are no hookups or dump station. Hanging Rock State Park, 30 minutes east, offers 73 family sites with similar amenities. For full hookups, Mayberry Campground in Mount Airy (15 minutes north) is the local favorite, and Pilot Knob RV Park sits right at the base of the mountain with 50-amp service. Pro tip: the state park campground runs March 15 through November 30 and books up fast for fall color weekends, so reserve six months ahead.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/pilot-mountain-state-park/campingWhen is the best time to visit Pilot Mountain in an RV?
The sweet spot for a Pilot Mountain RV trip is mid-April through early June and again from mid-September through early November, when Piedmont temperatures sit in a comfortable 60 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit range and the hardwood forests put on a stunning show. October is legendary for fall color on Big Pinnacle, with peak foliage usually arriving the third week of the month. Summers (June to August) are warm and humid with highs in the mid-80s and pop-up thunderstorms, but the campground's tree canopy keeps things shady. Winters are mild for the South, with highs in the 40s and 50s. Pro tip: the state park campground closes November 30, so book a private RV park if you're chasing winter solitude.
weather.gov/gsp/I've never rented an RV before. Is Pilot Mountain a good place to start?
Pilot Mountain is one of the friendliest places in North Carolina for first time renting an RV. The drive from Winston-Salem or the Triad up US-52 is straight, well-maintained interstate-style highway, and the state park exit (27) drops you a few minutes from the campground with no scary mountain switchbacks. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering propane, water, the generator, slide-outs, and dumping. You can also message your host anytime during the trip, and 24/7 roadside assistance is built into every booking. Pro tip: book a Class C motorhome or small travel trailer for your first trip, both of which handle like a large van or pickup and park easily at the state park's paved spurs.
ncdot.gov/travel-maps/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy rental in Pilot Mountain includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on US-52, a dead battery at the state park campground, or a lockout in Mount Airy is just one phone call away. Your host is also a direct text or call away through the RVezy app for quick questions about appliances, the awning, or the generator. For anything bigger, RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: the closest 24-hour services around Pilot Mountain are in Winston-Salem (about 24 miles south), and the Northern Regional Hospital in Mount Airy is the closest hospital, so save both in your phone for total peace of mind.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038103594-Roadside-assistance-coverageWhat are popular road trip routes from Pilot Mountain?
An RV road trip from Pilot Mountain opens up some of the Southeast's most iconic scenery. Head about 30 miles north on US-52 to Fancy Gap, VA, and hop on the Blue Ridge Parkway for a slow cruise toward Mabry Mill. Drive roughly 45 miles west to Stone Mountain State Park for a granite dome and trout streams. Asheville and the Great Smoky Mountains are about 165 to 220 miles southwest, an easy two-day trip. Travel into other US states is generally fine on your RVezy rental; just confirm with your host before crossing state lines. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy bookings. Pro tip: loop through Mount Airy on the way home for Andy Griffith Show nostalgia and a pork chop sandwich at the Snappy Lunch.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/index.htmWhat should I budget for fuel during a Pilot Mountain RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest expense after the rental itself, and the good news is North Carolina gas prices typically run below the national average. Expect a travel trailer tow vehicle to get 10 to 13 MPG, a Class C motorhome 8 to 10 MPG, and a Class A around 7 to 9 MPG. For a typical 200-mile weekend loop from Winston-Salem to Pilot Mountain to Mount Airy and back, budget roughly $60 to $100 in fuel for a midsize motorhome. There's a Sheetz right off US-52 exit 100 in Mount Airy with diesel and easy RV pull-through access. Pro tip: fill up in Winston-Salem before heading north, where prices are usually a few cents cheaper than at the small Surry County stations.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Pilot Mountain?
For Pilot Mountain State Park, reserve as early as possible: the North Carolina State Parks reservation system opens bookings up to six months in advance, and weekends from April through October fill quickly, especially in October for fall foliage. Holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) often require a two-night minimum stay. Private parks like Mayberry Campground in Mount Airy usually have more flexibility but still book up 4 to 8 weeks ahead in peak season. Pro tip: if your dates are tight, snag a midweek site, then watch for cancellations as other guests reschedule, which happens regularly.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/pilot-mountain-state-park/campingWhat are the local driving conditions like around Pilot Mountain?
Driving an RV around Pilot Mountain is genuinely easy compared to most mountain destinations. US-52 is a four-lane divided highway with gentle grades, and the exit 27 access road to the state park is a wide, paved two-lane with one moderate climb. Inside the park, the road to the summit parking area is steep, narrow, and not recommended for rigs over 25 feet; instead, park your RV at the campground and shuttle up in your tow vehicle or by foot. Summer afternoon thunderstorms are the main weather concern, with occasional ice possible December through February. Pro tip: avoid US-52 northbound on Friday afternoons during fall color season, when leaf-peepers from Winston-Salem create slowdowns near exit 27.
drivenc.gov/What hookups and amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Pilot Mountain?
Here's the honest breakdown so you can plan smart: Pilot Mountain State Park's family campground offers potable water spigots, flush toilets, hot showers, and trash collection, but no electric, water, or sewer hookups at individual sites and no on-site dump station. For full hookups (30/50-amp electric, water, sewer), head to Mayberry Campground or Pilot Knob RV Park, both within 15 minutes. The nearest dump stations are at these private parks. Pro tip: book a motorhome rental in Pilot Mountain with a robust house battery and fresh water tank (most Class C rigs hold 30 to 40 gallons), and you'll be totally comfortable for a 2 to 3 night dry-camping stay at the state park before topping off on your way home.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/pilot-mountain-state-park/campingWhat features and amenities come standard in a Pilot Mountain RV rental?
Most RV rentals in Pilot Mountain come fully equipped and ready to camp. Expect a real bed (queen or king in most Class C and travel trailer floorplans), a kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave and sink, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, roof AC, propane furnace, and seatbelts for every passenger. Many listings include a TV, and a growing number offer onboard WiFi or a cellular booster, which is handy since cell service can get spotty along the Yadkin River section of the park. Generators are common on Class C rigs and essential for dry camping at the state park. Pro tip: filter for listings that include camp chairs and an outdoor mat, perfect for relaxing under the oaks and hickories at your wooded site.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/pilot-mountain-state-parkWhat add-ons and pickup options do Pilot Mountain hosts typically offer?
Hosts on RVezy in the Pilot Mountain area love to make trips effortless with optional add-ons like linens and bedding packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits, outdoor grills, bike racks, generators, and even pre-stocked firewood (a smart pick since you cannot transport firewood into NC state parks from outside the county). Pickup is typically at the host's home in Winston-Salem, Mount Airy, King, or Pinnacle, with delivery to Pilot Mountain State Park usually running $2 to $4 per mile round trip. Mileage allowances commonly run 100 to 150 free miles per night. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a generator into one package, and you'll arrive at your campsite with literally nothing to do but pour a coffee and watch the sun rise over Pilot Knob.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/pilot-mountain-state-parkHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Pilot Mountain RV rental?
Payment is simple and fully handled through the RVezy platform, so you will never hand cash or a card directly to the host. You pay with a credit or debit card when you book, and the security deposit (set by each host, typically $500 to $1,500) is pre-authorized on your card a few days before the trip, separate from your booking payment, and is not actually charged unless there is an issue at return. As long as you bring the RV back in the condition you got it, with the tanks handled per the host's instructions and fuel topped off, the hold drops automatically. Pro tip: take a quick video walkaround of the rig at pickup and dropoff at the Mount Airy or Winston-Salem handover spot, a 60-second habit that protects everyone.
