Campgrounds and RV parks near Pinnacle, NC

Pilot Mountain State Park is the main draw. Rising more than 2,000 feet, Pilot Mountain has been a navigational landmark for centuries and offers miles of trails, camping, climbing, and scenery. The mountain summit connects to the Yadkin River section by a 6.5-mile trail corridor, and the trail network is augmented by a bridle trail and a canoe trail on the river. Rock climbing and rappelling are allowed on portions of the park's steep cliffs. Hanging Rock State Park, about 15 miles east, adds waterfall hikes and a swim lake. The park has trails to waterfalls and rock outcrops overlooking mountains and the piedmont, with 20-plus miles of hiking trails, mountain bike trails, and horse trails. Swimming and boating are available on the lake in season, and the Dan River offers paddling and tubing. Off-park options include the Yadkin Valley Wine Trail, Mount Airy's Mayberry-themed downtown, and drives on the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway.

The main camping season runs spring through fall. The Pilot Mountain family campground season runs from March 15 through November 30, while the park's canoe-in sites remain open year-round. Hanging Rock follows a similar pattern, with peak availability in the warmer months and reduced services in winter. Private parks such as Jomeokee typically operate April through November, and Greystone RV Park stays open year-round, giving RV travelers a winter option when state park loops close. Spring brings wildflowers, moderate temperatures, and steady rainfall; trails can be muddy after storms. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common and weekend sites at Pilot Mountain and Hanging Rock filling quickly. Fall is the busiest season for scenic travel, as hardwood color peaks in mid to late October and clear-day summit views draw heavy day-use traffic. Winter camping is quieter and colder, with occasional snow and ice at higher elevations. Pilot Mountain State Park remains open for day use, with gates closing in the evening.

Hookups and amenities vary sharply between public and private campgrounds. At Pilot Mountain State Park, there are no hookups or dump station, and the 42-site family campground offers tent and trailer sites with restrooms, hot showers, and drinking water. Many driveways are short or uneven, so site selection matters for larger rigs. Hanging Rock is similar in style, with a 73-site campground for tents and trailers, fire rings and picnic tables at each site, drinking water, and restrooms with hot showers. Private parks nearby are set up for RVs. Greystone RV Park offers pull-through sites with full hookups and 20/30/50 amp service. Jomeokee Campground adds tent options alongside RV sites with water and 30/50 amp electric, and Arrarat River Campground provides similar hookups for RVs. Cell service is generally reliable in the valley and weaker on the mountain.
