Campgrounds and RV parks near Plymouth, NC

Water access defines most trips. Pettigrew State Park protects Lake Phelps, one of the oldest and largest natural lakes in the eastern United States, popular for kayaking, bass fishing, and swimming, with trails running through bottomland forest and cypress swamp. The Roanoke River corridor offers paddle-in platform camping, guided river tours, and one of the most concentrated striped bass runs on the East Coast in spring. In town, the Port O' Plymouth Museum and the Roanoke River Lighthouse cover Civil War river history and Albemarle maritime heritage. Somerset Place State Historic Site, adjacent to Pettigrew State Park, preserves a 19th-century plantation. Day trips include Edenton's colonial waterfront, the wildlife viewing areas at Pocosin Lakes and Alligator River National Wildlife Refuges, and the beaches of the Outer Banks, roughly two hours east.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel. From March through May, daytime highs sit in the 60s and 70s Fahrenheit, the striped bass run peaks on the Roanoke, and private campgrounds are open with lighter crowds than midsummer. September through early November brings similar temperatures, lower humidity, and fall color in the bottomland hardwoods. Summer is hot, humid, and buggy. Highs regularly reach the upper 80s, afternoon thunderstorms are common, and mosquitoes and biting flies are heavy near the swamps and lakes. This is also the core of Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June through November and peaks in September, so travelers should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories. Winters are mild but wet. Snow is rare, though freezing nights occur and some private parks reduce services or shorten hours. Pettigrew State Park's campground is undergoing a renovation project, so travelers should confirm campground status directly with the park before planning a stay.

The landscape is flat, low, and often wet. Expect sandy soils, tannin-stained rivers, cypress and tupelo swamps, and long straight rural highways. Cell service is reliable in Plymouth itself but can drop off quickly on refuge roads and around Lake Phelps. Grocery, fuel, propane, and basic RV supplies are available in Plymouth and in nearby Williamston and Edenton. For larger repairs or specialty parts, Greenville is the closest larger service center. Insects are a real planning factor from late spring through early fall. Bring repellent, screen rooms if available, and a plan for shade. Wildlife along the Roanoke includes black bears and abundant birdlife, and alligators are present in some of the southern coastal refuges, so standard food-storage practices apply at rustic sites.
