Campgrounds near Princeton, NC
Princeton sits in eastern Johnston County, North Carolina, roughly 30 miles southeast of Raleigh and a short drive north of Goldsboro. The town is small and rural, which puts RV travelers within easy reach of both private RV resorts along the I-95 corridor and a state-park campground on the Neuse River. Interstate 95, US 70, and US 701 form the main access routes, so big rigs and towed trailers can reach most sites without navigating tight secondary roads.
Close-in options include Hidden Haven RV Park and North Pointe RV Resort, plus Raleigh Oaks RV and Cottage Resort in Four Oaks, which offers 150 level RV sites, cottages, two pools, a spa, and a fitness center. For a smaller, riverside experience, Dalys Riverside Campground in Seven Springs sits along the Neuse River.
For public land, Cliffs Of The Neuse State Park is in Wayne County near Seven Springs, offering a quieter, wooded alternative to the private resorts along the Neuse River.
Things to do around Princeton
The main outdoor draw is Cliffs Of The Neuse State Park, where the Neuse River cuts past wooded bluffs. In warmer months, visitors can swim seasonally or rent boats, and hiking trails wind through the surrounding hardwood forest. Paddlers use the Neuse between Smithfield and Seven Springs, and the park sits on the Neuse River Paddle Trail.
Families staying at the larger resorts have plenty on site. Raleigh Oaks includes mini-golf, pickleball, basketball, two pools, and a spa, with Bentonville Battlefield and its Civil War history nearby. Smithfield adds the Ava Gardner Museum, the Carolina Premium Outlets, and downtown restaurants, all within a short drive of any campground in the area.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel around Princeton. Daytime highs sit in the 60s to mid-70s Fahrenheit, humidity is manageable, and campgrounds are open but not fully booked. Wildflowers and hardwood foliage add appeal at Cliffs Of The Neuse State Park, and river levels on the Neuse are generally suitable for paddling.
Summer is peak season. Johnston County summers regularly top 90F, and humidity is high. Book weekends well ahead, particularly around Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day: those holiday weekends at North Carolina state park campgrounds, including Cliffs Of The Neuse, carry a two-night minimum. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and the Atlantic hurricane season can bring heavy rain from August into October.
Winter is mild but wet. The family campground at Cliffs Of The Neuse State Park is open year-round, and the larger private resorts also operate through the season, so cold-weather RV trips are viable with the right rig.
How to book campgrounds near Princeton
State park sites at Cliffs Of The Neuse are booked through the North Carolina State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to six months in advance. The campground has 12 sites with full RV hookups (sites 1 to 6, 8, 10, 12, 28, 30, and 32) with 30- and 50-amp service, potable water, and dedicated wastewater at each site.
Private resorts take direct bookings by phone or through their websites. Raleigh Oaks offers online RV and cottage reservations, while smaller parks like Dalys Riverside typically require a phone call. For summer weekends and holidays, book several weeks out at the state park and as early as possible at the private resorts.
What to expect on the ground
Site surfaces at the private resorts are generally level gravel with full hookups. Raleigh Oaks advertises big-rig friendly back-in and pull-thru sites up to 75 feet long, all with 30/50-amp service, free Wi-Fi, and cable TV. Cliffs Of The Neuse is more rustic, with a shower house offering hot water, a dump station, and firewood available for purchase in the park.
Rules are standard for the region. Pets are allowed on a maximum six-foot leash, must be supervised, and are not allowed on the swimming beach or inside park buildings. The front gate is closed and locked at posted closing times, and the combination is not given out, so late arrivals should plan around park hours.
