Camping near Red Cross, North Carolina
Red Cross is a small town in western Stanly County, North Carolina, sitting near the intersection of Highway 24/27 and Highway 205 in the state's Piedmont region. The area is rural and agricultural, positioned roughly an hour east of Charlotte and within short driving distance of the Uwharrie Mountains, Lake Tillery, Badin Lake, and the Pee Dee River corridor.
RV travelers use Red Cross as a quiet base for exploring central North Carolina's lake and forest recreation. Private options in the immediate area include Cotton Patch RV Campground, Norwood Campground, Yates Family Camping, and Ver-El RV Park and Campground, which cater to RVs with a mix of hookup sites and pull-throughs. Morrow Mountain State Park, about a half-hour drive east near Albemarle, adds state-run family, group, and cabin camping to the mix.
Beyond the town, the Uwharrie National Forest and Badin Lake Recreation Area expand the campground inventory with federally managed sites, giving travelers a wide range of choices within a short radius.
Things to do near Red Cross
Water recreation is a core draw. Lake Tillery and the Yadkin and Pee Dee River offer boating, kayaking, and fishing for bass, bream, crappie, and catfish, with public access at Morrow Mountain State Park and around Badin Lake. Badin Lake itself covers about 5,000 acres and has designated swim areas, accessible fishing piers at King's Mountain Point, and a shoreline hiking loop.
On land, the Uwharrie National Forest offers about 40 miles of non-motorized trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, plus roughly 17 miles of motorized routes for off-highway vehicles. Morrow Mountain State Park adds forested hiking, a seasonal day-use swimming pool built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and a scenic summit overlook. Charlotte, the North Carolina Zoo, and historic Gold Hill are all reachable as day trips.

The Red Cross area has a humid subtropical climate. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV camping, with daytime highs generally in the 60s to upper 70s Fahrenheit and cool nights that suit campfires. Late spring can be wet, so plan for occasional storms. Fall brings hardwood color across the Uwharries and lighter crowds at trailheads and boat ramps.
Summer is hot and humid. Daytime highs at Badin Lake and Morrow Mountain routinely reach the upper 80s and 90s, drawing peak visitation from Charlotte, Raleigh, and the Triad. Reserve well ahead for weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and expect the state park pool and lake swim areas to be busy.
Winters are cool rather than harsh, with lows near freezing and occasional light snow. Morrow Mountain State Park is open year-round, and Badin Lake Campground also operates year-round, though bath house use and some loops can be limited in the colder months.

This was my first experience personally using an RV rental service and it could not have gone better. Zack was very helpful and accommodating with all the questions and concerns I had and I would not hesitate to rent from him again. Pick up and drop off was very flexible. The unit was very clean. Everything worked as it should.

Corey and Ashley were wonderful. Very nice RV. Pictures don’t it justice. Obviously well taken care of. I will definitely be renting from them again.
Dave L. - Mar 2026
Cannot say enough good things about our experience renting from Corey. Very helpful with the renting process and what to expect. I chose the drop off option and it went very smooth - Corey gave a detailed rundown of the RV making sure I knew the basics. Everything was as described, well maintained, and just what we were looking for for our few days away. Corey was quick to respond when I had any questions and made sure everything was good. Highly recommend renting from Corey!

How to book campgrounds near Red Cross
State park sites at Morrow Mountain are booked through the North Carolina State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Sites can be booked up to six months in advance, and holiday weekends around Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day carry a two-night minimum. Family, group, and cabin inventory are all listed there.
Federal sites at Badin Lake Campground, Arrowhead Campground, Canebrake Horse Camp, and Badin Lake Group Camp in the Uwharrie National Forest are reserved through Recreation.gov, generally up to six months out. A limited number of first-come, first-served sites are sometimes offered on site, payable by cash or check to the USDA Forest Service.
Private campgrounds such as Cotton Patch RV Campground, Norwood Campground, Yates Family Camping, and Ver-El RV Park and Campground are booked directly with the property by phone or their own websites. Summer weekends and fall color weeks fill early, so book several weeks ahead.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Red Cross is rolling Piedmont with wooded hills and lake shoreline. Sites at Morrow Mountain State Park spread across loops of paved roads with a mix of primitive tent spots and electric RV sites, and some sites can be sloped enough to make leveling a challenge. Loop C is closest to trails, while Loop B tends to attract more RVs.
Badin Lake Campground has 35 non-electric sites in two loops with flush toilets, showers, and potable water, but no hookups and no dump station. Arrowhead Campground offers electric sites and a dump station, better suited to larger rigs. Cell coverage in the forest can be spotty.
Expect black bears, deer, and other wildlife in the Uwharries. The Uwharrie National Forest performs prescribed burns throughout the year, which may create smoky conditions. Pack for humidity in summer, biting insects near water, and firewood restrictions that discourage moving wood from outside the area.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Red Cross, NC
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Red Cross, NC?
RV rental in Red Cross, NC is one of the most affordable ways to explore the Uwharrie region, with travel trailers typically starting around $90 to $150 per night and Class C motorhomes ranging from $175 to $275 per night. Because Red Cross sits in rural Stanly County about an hour northeast of Charlotte, you'll often find better pricing here than in the city. To score a cheap RV rental in Red Cross, book midweek, travel in shoulder months like March or November, and filter for older travel trailers that still come fully equipped. Pro tip: message hosts about weekly discounts, since many drop nightly rates by 10 to 20 percent for stays of five nights or longer near Badin Lake.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Red%20Cross%2C%20NCWhat do I need to rent an RV in Red Cross, NC?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Red Cross, NC. North Carolina does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal RVs, even larger Class A motorhomes you'll find on the platform. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID directly through the platform during booking, so there's no paperwork to chase down. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly the approval process moves, often within a few hours of booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Red Cross protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Red Cross, NC booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance built into your reservation. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, giving you peace of mind whether you're parked at Morrow Mountain State Park or driving back roads through Stanly County. During checkout you'll choose between protection tiers, so you can pick the level of coverage that fits your comfort zone (guests choose, not hosts). Pro tip: pick a higher tier if it's your first time renting an RV. The small extra cost is worth the lower deductible if you accidentally clip a low branch at a wooded campsite.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Red Cross RV trip?
Booking your Red Cross RV trip is low-risk because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy across the platform. There's a money-back grace period right after you book, and cancellations made well in advance of your trip start date are treated differently than last-minute changes. If a host cancels, you'll receive a full refund or travel credit through RVezy. The cancellation policy isn't posted on individual listings because it's standardized through RVezy. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best rigs around Charlotte Motor Speedway race weekends, and review the full cancellation terms in the RVezy Help Center before you confirm.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Red Cross?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental in Red Cross is easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see rigs whose hosts welcome four-legged passengers. Stanly County is a great area for dog owners because Morrow Mountain State Park allows leashed pets on all hiking trails, and the Uwharrie National Forest just east of Red Cross has miles of dog-friendly forest roads. Always travel with your dog's vaccination records, a tie-out leash, and a collapsible water bowl since summer temperatures here can hit the upper 80s. Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your dog's size and breed. Many Red Cross hosts waive or reduce pet fees for well-behaved, crate-trained pups.
ncparks.gov/morrow-mountain-state-park/things-doCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Red Cross?
Yes, RV delivery in Red Cross is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who don't want to drive a big rig themselves. Many local hosts will deliver the RV directly to Morrow Mountain State Park, Badin Lake Campground in Uwharrie National Forest, or even to a private driveway or family farm. Your host arrives, levels the RV, connects water, sewer, and electric (the 30 or 50 amp shore power your campsite provides), and walks you through every system before leaving. Delivery fees are typically charged per mile from the host's home base. Pro tip: ask about a delivery-and-setup-only package so you can fly into Charlotte Douglas International Airport and skip renting a car entirely.
charlotteairport.com/How far can I drive on a Red Cross RV trip?
Most Red Cross RV trip itineraries fit easily within typical mileage allowances, which usually run 100 to 150 miles per night with options for unlimited mileage on some listings. From Red Cross, you can reach Charlotte in under an hour, Asheville and the Blue Ridge Parkway in about 2.5 hours (140 miles), Wilmington's Atlantic beaches in 3.5 hours (200 miles), and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in roughly 4 hours (230 miles). If you're planning a longer loop through the Carolinas, filter for RV rental with unlimited mileage to skip the math entirely. Pro tip: ask the host to bump your mileage cap upfront. It's almost always cheaper to prepay miles than to settle overage fees at drop-off.
ncdot.gov/travel-maps/Pages/default.aspxWhere are the best campgrounds near Red Cross, NC?
You're spoiled for choice with campgrounds near Red Cross, NC. Morrow Mountain State Park (about 15 miles away) offers 106 RV and tent sites with electric hookups, hot showers, and views of Lake Tillery. Badin Lake Campground in the Uwharrie National Forest has lakefront non-electric sites under towering pines, perfect for RV camping in Red Cross weekends. Camping World Racing Resort near Concord (about 35 miles west) offers 380 full-hookup sites and is the go-to for NASCAR weekends at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Norwood Campgrounds and Yates Family Camping are closer-in private options with full hookups. Pro tip: reserve Morrow Mountain through the North Carolina State Parks ReserveAmerica portal up to 11 months in advance. Lakefront loops book out fast for spring and fall weekends.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/morrow-mountain-state-parkWhen is the best time for an RV trip from Red Cross?
The sweet spot for an RV road trip from Red Cross runs from mid-March through late May and again from September through early November, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 65 to 78 degree range and humidity drops. Summers in the central North Carolina Piedmont can climb into the low 90s with sticky humidity, so plan early-morning drives and book RVs with strong air conditioning. Winters are mild compared to the mountains: daytime highs typically reach the mid 50s, and snow is rare. October is arguably the best month overall, with brilliant fall color across the Uwharrie Mountains and crisp evenings perfect for campfires. Pro tip: avoid Charlotte Motor Speedway race weekends in May and October unless you actually want the NASCAR experience, since local campgrounds fill instantly.
weather.gov/gsp/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in the Red Cross area?
You'll do great, and Red Cross is actually one of the easier places in North Carolina to learn. The two-lane state highways around Stanly County (NC-24/27, NC-205, NC-740) are wide, lightly trafficked, and largely flat, so first-time renting an RV here feels manageable. Your host will give you a full orientation walkthrough at pickup covering propane, slide-outs, leveling, and the dashboard before you ever turn the key. If you're nervous about Charlotte traffic on I-485, book delivery so the RV meets you at your campground. RVezy customer support is one message away if anything feels confusing on the road. Pro tip: do a short practice loop on Stanly County's back roads before heading to your campsite, just to get comfortable with mirrors and turning radius.
ncdot.gov/initiatives-policies/safety/Pages/default.aspxWhat if I have a breakdown during my RV camping trip in Red Cross?
Take a deep breath, because every RV rental in Red Cross booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan. If you get a flat on US-52, a dead battery at a Badin Lake overlook, or run out of fuel on a back road in the Uwharrie National Forest, one phone call dispatches help to your location. RVezy support is also available around the clock to coordinate with your host if anything mechanical pops up at the campsite. The closest full-service hospitals are Atrium Health Stanly in Albemarle (about 10 miles away) and Atrium Health Cabarrus in Concord. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you leave the host's driveway. You'll likely never need it, but it's instant peace of mind.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Red Cross RV rental across state lines or to Canada?
Yes, you can absolutely cross state lines on your Red Cross RV rental, and most hosts encourage it. Popular interstate routes include heading south to Charleston, SC (about 3.5 hours), east to the Outer Banks (about 5 hours), or north into Virginia's Shenandoah National Park (about 5 hours). Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the individual host and the protection coverage, so confirm by messaging the host before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage doesn't extend across that border. Pro tip: if you're aiming for a longer regional RV road trip from Red Cross, mention your full route in the booking message so the host can recommend mileage packages and tire-check stops.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on my Red Cross RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable on any RV trip, but the math is friendly in central North Carolina. Travel trailers won't burn extra fuel themselves (your tow vehicle does), Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, and Class B campervans can get 18 to 22 mpg. North Carolina's gas prices typically run slightly below the national average, and you'll find clean, RV-friendly stations along US-52, NC-49, and I-85 around Concord. For a 4-night, 400-mile loop in a Class C, expect roughly $130 to $180 in fuel. Pro tip: use the GasBuddy app and fill up at the Sheetz or QuikTrip locations near Albemarle and Concord. They're easy to pull through with a long rig and consistently have the lowest prices in Stanly County.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Red Cross?
For the best sites, book your campground as soon as you book your RV. Morrow Mountain State Park opens reservations 11 months ahead through the North Carolina State Parks ReserveAmerica system, and waterfront RV loops for spring weekends, fall foliage, and Memorial Day routinely sell out months in advance. Badin Lake Campground and other Uwharrie National Forest sites are bookable up to 6 months ahead through Recreation.gov. Private parks like Camping World Racing Resort in Concord book up fast for NASCAR weekends (typically May and October). Pro tip: if you're flexible, search for cancellations 7 to 14 days before your trip. Sites pop back open constantly, and the state parks system shows live availability so you can grab a prime spot at the last minute.
northcarolinastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the driving conditions like around Red Cross?
Driving around Red Cross is refreshingly mellow. You're in the rolling Piedmont with gentle grades, well-maintained two-lane highways, and minimal traffic outside the Charlotte metro area. The main roads through Stanly County (NC-24/27, NC-740, US-52) are easy to navigate even in a 30-foot motorhome. Watch for occasional deer at dawn and dusk on rural stretches, and be prepared for short, intense summer thunderstorms that can drop visibility quickly between June and August. If you're heading toward Charlotte, avoid I-485 between 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6:30 p.m. on weekdays. Pro tip: there's a low railroad underpass on Old Salisbury Road near Albemarle that's tight for tall rigs, so use Google Maps with RV settings or stick to numbered state highways and you'll never have a clearance issue.
ncdot.gov/travel-maps/traffic-travel/Pages/default.aspxWhere do I dump tanks and fill water at campgrounds near Red Cross?
You'll have plenty of options. Most full-hookup campgrounds near Red Cross, including Camping World Racing Resort, Norwood Campgrounds, and Yates Family Camping, offer water, electric (30 and 50 amp), and sewer right at each site. Morrow Mountain State Park has a dedicated dump station near its campground entrance plus potable water fill stations, even though individual sites are electric-only. Badin Lake Campground in the Uwharrie National Forest is non-electric, so plan to arrive with full fresh water and empty tanks. Pro tip: keep a 25-foot drinking-water-safe hose and a sewer hose support in the RV (most hosts include both). When you stop for fuel at the Love's Travel Stop in Salisbury (about 25 miles north), you can dump and refill for a small fee on your way home.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/nfsnc/recarea/?recid=48916What's included inside the RV rental in Red Cross?
You're getting a fully equipped home on wheels. Most motorhome rentals in Red Cross come with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and couch beds (sleeps 4 to 8), a full kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge and freezer, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, furnace, and a TV. Many include a generator for off-grid use, Wi-Fi hotspot capability, and seatbelts for every passenger. Hosts typically provide kitchenware, linens, and basic outdoor gear, though some charge a small fee for linen or kitchen kits. A Class B campervan rental in Red Cross trades the full bathroom for a more nimble footprint and better fuel economy. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities list and message the host to confirm what's included, since add-ons like camp chairs, generators, and bike racks vary by rig.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Red%20Cross%2C%20NCWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect in Red Cross?
Hosts in the Red Cross area offer some genuinely useful add-ons. Common extras include generators, bike racks, kayaks, outdoor grills, camp chairs, propane fire pits, linen and kitchen kits, and mileage upgrades. Pickup is usually at the host's home base in Stanly or Cabarrus County, but RV delivery in Red Cross to your campground or driveway is widely available, with fees calculated per mile from the host's location. Mileage policies vary by listing: many hosts include 100 miles per night with overage fees, while others offer unlimited mileage for a flat upcharge. Pro tip: bundle delivery, generator, and a mileage upgrade into one conversation with the host before booking. You'll often get a small package discount.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Red%20Cross%2C%20NCHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure through RVezy. You pay for your booking by credit or debit card directly on the platform, never to the host outside the system, which keeps your trip protected. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment before pickup and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape, typically within a few days of drop-off. Deposit amounts depend on the rig and your chosen protection tier. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkaround with the host at pickup and drop-off, take photos of the exterior and interior, and return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels you started with. Pro tip: empty the black and gray tanks before drop-off in Red Cross to skip the standard dump-out fee many hosts charge.
