Campgrounds near Rhodhiss, North Carolina
Rhodhiss sits on the Catawba River in the Blue Ridge foothills of western North Carolina, straddling Burke and Caldwell counties. The town takes its name from Lake Rhodhiss, a roughly 3,060-acre reservoir with about 90 miles of shoreline, formed when Duke Energy built the Rhodhiss Dam in 1925. The lake is narrow and river-like, sitting on the Catawba chain between Lake James upstream and Lake Hickory downstream, and its shoreline is heavily forested and lightly developed compared with the larger reservoirs further south.
RV travelers use Rhodhiss as a base for both lake recreation and mountain access. Hickory and Morganton provide the nearest full-service groceries, fuel, and hospitals, and the town is roughly an hour from Asheville and from Charlotte.
Close-in options include Indian Springs Campground, Green Mountain Park, Buffalo Creek Campground, and 321 RV Park for hookup sites, plus the Family campground at South Mountains State Park to the south for a state-park setting along the Jacob Fork River.
Things to do around Rhodhiss
Water recreation is the main draw. Lake Rhodhiss supports swimming, water skiing, powerboating, kayaking, and paddleboarding through the warmer months, with public boat access areas maintained by Duke Energy and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. Anglers target largemouth, spotted, and striped bass along with catfish and crappie; a North Carolina fishing license is required.
South Mountains State Park, a short drive south, offers nearly 50 miles of multi-use trails, including about 33 miles open to horses and an 18-mile loop open to mountain bikers, one of the few in the state parks system. Trout fishing is available in the park's streams, most classified as wild trout water, with about two miles designated delayed harvest.
Day trips reach the Blue Ridge Parkway, Lake James, Linville Gorge, and the Waldensian heritage sites in Valdese.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in the foothills. March through May brings rising temperatures, blooming foliage, and one of the wettest stretches of the year, with rainy days building through spring. September and October tend to be the driest and clearest months, and the fall color that draws leaf-peepers to the surrounding ridges peaks in mid to late October.
Summer runs warm and humid, with July daytime highs typically in the mid to upper 80s Fahrenheit and afternoon thunderstorms common. This is peak season on Lake Rhodhiss and at South Mountains State Park, and holiday weekends at the state park carry a two-night minimum stay. Reservations at South Mountains fill quickly, especially for the two electric RV sites.
Winter is cold with occasional snow and ice. Some private parks reduce services or close for the season, while South Mountains State Park stays open year-round except Christmas Day.

How to book a campsite
Private parks around Rhodhiss, including Indian Springs Campground, Green Mountain Park, Buffalo Creek Campground, and 321 RV Park, handle reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Confirm rig-length limits, hookup type, and any weekly-stay policies before booking.
South Mountains State Park uses the North Carolina State Parks reservation system through ReserveAmerica. Campsites can be booked up to six months in advance, and holiday weekends carry a two-night minimum. Cancellations and refunds must be processed by phone with ReserveAmerica.
At the state park, all campers must stop at the visitor center on arrival to register their vehicle and receive a hang tag, and gate hours are strictly enforced. The park is open every day except Christmas Day, with the front gate opening at 7 a.m.
What to expect on the ground
The Rhodhiss area is rural. Sites near the lake are quiet and wooded, and the reservoir's shoreline is mostly undeveloped compared with the larger Catawba chain lakes further south. Cell service can be spotty in the coves and drops out entirely inside South Mountains State Park.
At the state park's family campground, expect a small loop with mostly walk-in tent sites and only two RV-capable sites, both with 50-amp electric and no water or sewer hookups. A shower house with running water is on site, and each site has a picnic table and fire ring.
Pets are allowed at the state park on an attended leash no longer than six feet, but not inside buildings. Some park facilities, including the High Shoals Falls Trail, have been closed for hazard repairs, so campers should check the park's status page before arrival.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Rhodhiss, NC
How much does an RV rental in Rhodhiss, NC typically cost?
RV rentals in Rhodhiss are among the more affordable options in North Carolina because you are outside major tourist hubs like Asheville. Expect roughly $90 to $180 per night for travel trailers, $150 to $250 for Class C motorhomes, and $250 plus for Class A coaches. To find a cheap RV rental in Rhodhiss, book midweek stays in April or October when Lake Rhodhiss is quiet, filter by sleeping capacity rather than oversizing, and use the price range slider on RVezy. Hosts in nearby Granite Falls, Hickory, and Morganton often have lower nightly rates than Charlotte-based listings and are only minutes from the lake.

A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Rhodhiss for virtually every motorhome and travel trailer on RVezy. Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, and fifth wheels all fall under a standard license. RVezy requires approved drivers to be 25 or older, and identity verification is handled inside the platform. Pack your license and you are ready to roll toward Lake Rhodhiss.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat kind of protection comes with my Rhodhiss RV rental?
You are covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Rhodhiss, NC through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on the lake instead of the what-ifs. The protection plan covers most damages to the vehicle during your trip, with multiple coverage tiers that you (not the host) select during checkout based on how much peace of mind you want. Choose your coverage level once your route is finalized, especially if you are planning longer drives up the Blue Ridge Parkway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Rhodhiss RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Specific refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel. Cancellation terms are handled through RVezy support rather than displayed on each listing. If a host needs to cancel, RVezy will refund you or provide travel credit. Book early to secure the best Lake Rhodhiss weekends, knowing flexibility is built in if your plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Rhodhiss?
Absolutely, your dog is welcome on the trip. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Rhodhiss, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see motorhomes and trailers where hosts have given the green light. Once you're here, your pup will love the area: South Mountains State Park allows leashed dogs (6-foot leash max) on trails and at campsites, and Valdese Lakeside Park on Lake Rhodhiss has a dedicated dog park, kayak launch, and shaded greenway. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any breed or size notes so check-in is seamless.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/south-mountains-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Rhodhiss?
Yes, RV delivery in Rhodhiss is widely available and it is the easiest way to start your trip, especially if you have never towed before. Many RVezy hosts in Caldwell, Burke, and Catawba counties will drive the RV to Valdese Lakeside Park, your driveway, or campgrounds like South Mountains State Park or Lake James State Park, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through everything. Use the Delivery filter to see who offers it and check the host's delivery radius and per-mile fee. Ask for setup at your campsite so all you have to do is open the door and pour the first cup of coffee.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rhodhiss,North%20CarolinaHow far can I drive, and what mileage policies should I expect?
You have plenty of road ahead. Most RVezy hosts in the Rhodhiss area include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles available at roughly $0.30 to $0.50 each, and some hosts offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage upgrade. From Rhodhiss you can reach the Blue Ridge Parkway at Linville Falls in about 50 miles, Asheville in 75 miles, Charlotte in 70 miles, Boone in 55 miles, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park in around 130 miles. Map your full route before booking and message the host to lock in an unlimited mileage add-on if you are planning a wider RV road trip from Rhodhiss.
nps.gov/blri/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Rhodhiss for my RV?
Top picks for RV camping in Rhodhiss include South Mountains State Park near Connelly Springs (family campground with electric hookups, about 25 miles south), Lake James State Park (Catawba and Paddy's Creek areas, around 30 miles west with lakefront sites), and Steele Creek Park & Campground in Morganton (full hookups along the Catawba River, about 15 miles away). For higher elevation, Julian Price Campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway is about 60 miles north. Book South Mountains and Lake James through ncparks.gov up to six months ahead, especially for fall color weekends in mid-October.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/south-mountains-state-park/campingWhen is the best time of year for a Rhodhiss RV trip?
Spring and fall are the sweet spot for RV camping in Rhodhiss. April through early June brings highs in the 70s and blooming dogwoods, while mid-September through early November delivers crisp 60 to 75 degree days and famous Blue Ridge foothills color, peaking around the third week of October. Summer (highs in the upper 80s, humid) is great for swimming and boating on Lake Rhodhiss. Winters are mild by mountain standards (30s to 50s) and RV rentals tend to be cheaper. Book a weekend in October for unbeatable foliage along the Catawba River chain.
weather.gov/gsp/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You're going to do great. RVezy is built for the first time renting an RV crowd: your host gives a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering generator, slide-outs, propane, water systems, and dumping, and you can message them anytime during the trip. For extra confidence, choose a Class C motorhome or small travel trailer, both drive much like a large truck, and consider delivery so you skip the towing learning curve entirely. The flat, two-lane roads around Rhodhiss and Granite Falls are forgiving compared to mountain switchbacks. Pro tip: do a slow lap of an empty parking lot at Lakeside Park before heading out so you get a feel for the turning radius.
ncdot.gov/initiatives-policies/safety/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RV rental in Rhodhiss, NC through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flats, jump-starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing if needed. Your host is also a direct text away for quirks specific to their rig, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Cell coverage is solid along I-40, US 321, and most of Lake Rhodhiss, with thinner spots in remote forest areas. Snap a photo of the roadside assistance number on the dashboard sticker before you pull away from pickup so it is handy without scrolling.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip routes from Rhodhiss?
Rhodhiss is a perfect launchpad for an RV road trip. Top ideas: the Blue Ridge Parkway north to Grandfather Mountain and Linville Gorge (about 50 to 70 miles), west to Asheville and the Biltmore Estate (75 miles), down to Chimney Rock and Lake Lure (55 miles), or northeast to Boone and Blowing Rock (55 miles). For a longer loop, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is about 130 miles via I-40 west. Time the Parkway segment for a weekday to avoid leaf-peeper traffic at the Linn Cove Viaduct overlook.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/index.htmWhat should I budget for fuel on my Rhodhiss RV trip?
Fuel is one of your easier line items here. North Carolina gas prices typically sit below the national average, and you'll find affordable stations along US 321 in Granite Falls and I-40 exits near Hickory and Morganton. Realistic mileage: Class B campervans average 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 mpg, Class A coaches 6 to 10 mpg, and trucks towing travel trailers around 10 to 14 mpg. For a 300-mile weekend in a Class C, budget roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: top off in Granite Falls or Lenoir before heading up to the Blue Ridge Parkway, where gas stations become sparse.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Rhodhiss?
Book early and you will have your pick. North Carolina State Parks (including South Mountains and Lake James) open reservations up to six months in advance through ncparks.gov, and prime summer weekends and October foliage dates fill quickly. Private parks near Rhodhiss can often be booked 4 to 8 weeks out. Federal sites along the Blue Ridge Parkway (Julian Price, Linville Falls) use recreation.gov on a six-month window. Set a calendar reminder for the six-month mark to claim the best lakefront and creekside sites.
ncparks.gov/passes-and-permits/camping-reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Rhodhiss?
Driving here is friendlier than most mountain destinations. Rhodhiss sits in the rolling Catawba River foothills, so roads like NC-18, US-321, and I-40 are wide, well-maintained, and gently graded, which makes them ideal for first-time RVers. Expect tighter curves and 6 to 8 percent grades once you climb onto the Blue Ridge Parkway or head toward Grandfather Mountain. Summer afternoon thunderstorms can pop up quickly, and winter ice is possible above 2,500 feet from December through February. Pro tip: avoid the Parkway in fog (common at higher elevations after sunset) and use US-221 as a lower, faster alternative when weather turns.
drivenc.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Rhodhiss?
Most campgrounds in the area are well-equipped. At South Mountains State Park's family campground you'll find tent pads, electrical hookups, potable water, hot showers, flush toilets, and a dump station; Lake James State Park offers similar amenities plus a swim beach. Private parks like Steele Creek and Buffalo Camp RV Park typically include full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, and laundry. Free dump stations are available at most state parks for registered campers. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank before leaving the host's driveway, because primitive sites at South Mountains require carrying water in, and ask the host where to dump on return so you don't get hit with a cleaning fee.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/lake-james-state-park/campingWhat's included inside a typical Rhodhiss RV rental?
You are getting a turn-key home on wheels. Most motorhome rentals in Rhodhiss come with a fully equipped kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, cookware, plates, utensils), a bathroom with shower and toilet, sleeping for 4 to 8 with real mattresses, climate control via AC and propane furnace, a generator or shore power, and seatbelted travel seats. Many hosts also include linens, towels, a TV, outdoor chairs, and a starter kit of paper goods and propane. Wi-Fi hotspots are a common add-on. Check the listing photos and amenity checklist carefully, then message the host to confirm specifics like a coffee maker, outdoor grill, or kid-friendly bunk setup before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rhodhiss,North%20CarolinaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
You can customize your trip easily. Popular add-ons for an RV rental in Rhodhiss include delivery and setup (often $2 to $4 per mile), generator hours, propane refills, bike racks, kayaks, camping chairs, fire pits, and linen packages, usually $25 to $100 each. Standard pickup is at the host's home in towns like Granite Falls, Lenoir, Hickory, or Morganton, all within about 20 minutes of Lake Rhodhiss, with orientation taking 30 to 60 minutes. Mileage caps vary by host but most include 100 plus free miles per night. Bundle delivery with a generator add-on if you are heading to a primitive site at South Mountains State Park so you have power without hauling fuel.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rhodhiss,North%20CarolinaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
It is straightforward and secure. When you book your RV rental in Rhodhiss through RVezy, payment is processed through the platform (never directly to the host) using a credit or debit card, so you are protected end-to-end. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before your trip, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value, and is released after the host confirms the rig was returned clean, on time, and undamaged. To avoid deposit issues: do a thorough walk-around photo set at pickup and dropoff, return with fuel and propane levels matching pickup, and dump tanks if your agreement requires it. Ask the host upfront about cleaning expectations so your full deposit lands back in your account within days.
