Camping near Summerfield, North Carolina
Summerfield sits in Guilford County in the North Carolina Piedmont, just northwest of Greensboro and within easy reach of the Sauratown Mountains and the Dan River corridor. The area works well as a base for RV trips because it combines suburban services with quick access to state parks, city lakes, and rural riverfront campgrounds.
Closest options include Dan River Campground and River Adventures, which offers riverside sites tied to tubing and paddling on the Dan River, and Oak Hollow Campground, a High Point city park on Oak Hollow Lake with lakeside RV sites a short drive south. Greensboro KOA Journey sits near Interstate 85 in the Greensboro area, providing full-hookup sites close to the city.
For a state-park experience, Hanging Rock State Park lies about an hour north in Stokes County and anchors most weekend trips out of Summerfield with its waterfalls, lake, and forested campground. Sunset Park Campground, also in Stokes County near Walnut Cove and Danbury, is another private option in the same corridor.
Things to do around Summerfield
Outdoor activity in the area centers on water and trails. Tubing, kayaking, and fishing on the Dan River are the signature summer pursuits, and Dan River Campground and River Adventures runs shuttle-based float trips from its own put-ins. Oak Hollow Lake supports boating, paddleboarding, and shoreline fishing right from the campground.
Hiking is the main draw at Hanging Rock State Park, which contains more than 20 miles of trails, five named waterfalls, and rocky summit routes through the Sauratown Range. Rock climbing is permitted with a park permit on designated cliffs, and the park lake opens for swimming and boat rentals between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Closer to Summerfield, families use Greensboro KOA Journey as a base for the Greensboro Science Center, downtown Greensboro, and the Bicentennial Greenway between Greensboro and High Point.

The Piedmont around Summerfield has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV camping, with mild days, cool nights, and lower humidity than midsummer. Fall color in the Sauratown Mountains typically peaks in mid to late October, which drives strong weekend demand at Hanging Rock State Park.
Summer is hot and humid, with regular afternoon thunderstorms and the highest rainfall of the year. It is also peak season for river tubing on the Dan and for swimming at Hanging Rock lake, which operates from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Weekends fill early at both private and state-park campgrounds.
Winter is cool rather than harsh, with occasional freezing nights and only light, infrequent snow. Note that the Hanging Rock family campground is scheduled to close for an extended period of construction to build new shower houses and improve sites, so travelers should confirm status directly with North Carolina State Parks before planning a stay there.

The Rv was exactly what we needed and the owner (Jonathan) was an incredible help. Jonathan takes great care of this RV and anyone who rents it will be pleased. But please treat the RV well, because I plan on renting again in the future!!

This is the best RV we’ve ever rented. So many little extras make this special. The Plush pillow top mattress in the master was a welcome surprise. Communication was great. No fuss drop off and pick up. Will definitely rent again if we’re in the area.

How to book campgrounds near Summerfield
Hanging Rock State Park is booked through the North Carolina State Parks reservation system, powered by ReserveAmerica, online or by phone. Reservations open up to six months in advance, and a 14-consecutive-night limit applies within any 30-day period. Holiday weekends carry a two-night minimum, and cabins at Hanging Rock also require a two-night minimum. Cabin and group cancellations must be made at least 14 days before arrival for a refund. Note that the family campground is scheduled to close for construction of new shower houses and site improvements, so confirm operating status before booking.
Oak Hollow Campground is operated by the City of High Point and takes reservations through the city's parks and recreation booking portal. Greensboro KOA Journey books through the KOA website or app, while Dan River Campground and River Adventures and Sunset Park Campground take reservations directly by phone or through their own listings.
What to expect on-site
Private campgrounds in the area, including Greensboro KOA Journey, Sunset Park Campground, and Dan River Campground and River Adventures, generally offer full or partial hookups, Wi-Fi where available, and family amenities such as pools, playgrounds, or river access. Oak Hollow Campground provides lakeside sites with hookups, a boat ramp, and swimming access.
Expect a different experience at Hanging Rock State Park. The family campground has 73 sites across two loops with no RV hookups and no dump station, and it accepts RVs up to 60 feet in length, although many sites are tight and better suited to smaller rigs. Sites include fire rings and picnic tables, and bathhouses provide hot showers and drinking water.
Cell service is limited at Hanging Rock and along parts of the Dan River, so downloading maps and reservation confirmations before arrival is recommended. Pets are welcome at most sites on a leash.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Summerfield, NC
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Summerfield, NC?
RV rental in Summerfield, NC is more affordable than most travelers expect, with travel trailers often starting around $90 to $150 per night and Class C motorhomes typically ranging from $175 to $300 per night on RVezy. Pricing depends on the RV's size, age, and the season, with peak summer weekends (June through August) commanding the highest rates around the Greensboro and Triad area. For a cheap RV rental in Summerfield, target a midweek pickup in late March, April, or November when hosts often discount unbooked dates. Pro tip: filtering by Instant Book and pop-up campers can shave another 20 to 30 percent off your total trip cost.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Summerfield%2C%20North%20CarolinaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Summerfield, NC?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Summerfield, NC. North Carolina does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers, even larger Class A rigs. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older and need to upload a photo of a valid driver's license through the platform for quick ID confirmation. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home-country license. Most first-time renters in Guilford County are surprised how simple the paperwork is, so you can focus on the fun part: planning the route.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection and roadside help is included with my RV rental?
Every RV rental in Summerfield, NC booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), and it covers most damage to the vehicle during your trip. Roadside help covers flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing if you run into trouble on I-40, US-220, or anywhere on your Summerfield RV trip. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number to your phone before pickup, you'll have one call to make if anything pops up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Summerfield RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every rental (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund amounts after the grace period depend on how far out from your trip you cancel. You can review the full policy details on the RVezy Help Center before you confirm. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so your trip stays on track. Pro tip: book early to secure popular pet-friendly and delivery-ready rigs around Summerfield, then relax knowing there's a clear path if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip from Summerfield?
Absolutely, plenty of owners offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Summerfield, NC. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see rigs that welcome dogs, and message the host to share your pup's size and breed so everyone's on the same page. Once you're packed up, your four-legged co-pilot will love Hanging Rock State Park and Pilot Mountain State Park, both of which allow leashed pets (6-foot leash maximum) at campsites and on most trails. Closer to home, the Atlantic & Yadkin Greenway near Summerfield is a great pre-trip leg-stretcher. Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl, Piedmont summers get muggy fast.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/hanging-rock-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway?
Yes, RV delivery in Summerfield, NC is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-time renters who'd rather skip the driving. Many hosts will tow or drive the rig directly to spots like Greensboro KOA Journey, Hagan-Stone Park in Pleasant Garden, or your own driveway off NC-150, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see who offers it and how far they'll travel. Pro tip: delivery fees are usually quoted by the mile, so picking a campground within 30 minutes of Summerfield keeps the cost down.
greensboro-nc.gov/departments/parks-recreationHow does the mileage policy work and how far can I drive?
Hosts set their own mileage policies, so you'll see options ranging from 100 free miles per night up to RV rental with unlimited mileage right on the listing page. For a quick weekend at Hanging Rock State Park (about 35 miles north) or Pilot Mountain (around 45 miles west), a standard daily allowance is plenty. Planning a bigger RV road trip from Summerfield to Asheville (155 miles), the Outer Banks (about 280 miles), or Charleston, SC (310 miles)? Filter for unlimited mileage to skip the math. Pro tip: any miles for delivery to your campsite usually don't count against your allowance, just confirm with your host in the chat before booking.
ncdot.gov/travel-maps/Pages/default.aspxWhere are the best campgrounds near Summerfield, NC?
You've got excellent options within 30 minutes of Summerfield. Greensboro KOA Journey sits just off I-40/I-85 and offers full-hookup pull-throughs perfect for first-timers. Hagan-Stone Park in Pleasant Garden has electric and water sites with shaded loops and walking trails about 20 miles south. Oak Hollow Campground in High Point hugs the shoreline of Oak Hollow Lake with 107 full-hookup RV sites. For a state park vibe, Hanging Rock State Park near Danbury (45 minutes north) is open year-round, though sites are non-electric. Lake Reidsville Recreation Park rounds out the list with full hookups about 30 minutes east. Pro tip: book Hanging Rock up to 6 months in advance through the NC State Parks system.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/hanging-rock-state-park/campingWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Summerfield?
Spring (April through early June) and fall (mid-September through late October) are the sweet spot for RV camping in Summerfield. You'll get daytime highs in the 65 to 80°F range, lower humidity, and brilliant Piedmont foliage in October. July averages a high near 90°F with a heat index that can climb past 100°F, so if you go in mid-summer, target shaded campgrounds with 50-amp service to run the AC comfortably. Winter trips (December through February) are doable too, with mild daytime highs around 50°F, though overnight lows can dip into the 20s. Pro tip: book your fall foliage week by July, weekends fill fast across the Triad.
weather.gov/rah/I've never driven an RV. Will I actually be okay?
Yes, and you're in good company: first time renting an RV is how most RVezy guests start. Every host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering the propane, water, electrical, slide-outs, and dump procedure, plus answers your texts during the trip if a question pops up. Summerfield is a great launching pad because the surrounding roads (US-220, NC-150, NC-68) are wide and rural with very few low bridges. If the idea of driving still feels big, book delivery and let the host park the rig at your campsite. Pro tip: do a slow loop around an empty parking lot like Summerfield Athletic Park before heading out, ten minutes of practice builds huge confidence.
ncdot.gov/initiatives-policies/safety/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
You're covered: every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on I-73, a dead battery at Hagan-Stone Park, or a tow off the Blue Ridge Parkway is one phone call away. Your host is also a great first text for anything quirky about their specific RV, like which breaker controls the fridge or how to reset the inverter. For interior issues (a stuck slide, a finicky water pump), RVezy's support team is available throughout your trip to coordinate solutions. Pro tip: snap a quick photo of the breaker panel and propane shutoff during your walkthrough so you can troubleshoot small things yourself without missing a beat.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat are popular road trips I can take from Summerfield?
Summerfield sits at a perfect crossroads for an RV road trip from Summerfield in almost any direction. Head west on I-40 to the Blue Ridge Parkway and Asheville (about 155 miles, 2.5 hours) for mountain vistas and craft breweries. Drive northwest to Pilot Mountain State Park (45 miles) or Mount Airy, the real-life Mayberry (60 miles). Roll east to Raleigh (77 miles) or push on to the Outer Banks (about 280 miles, 5 hours). Heading south? Charlotte is 86 miles down US-220 and I-85. Pro tip: cross-border trips into Virginia and South Carolina are welcome, but RVezy rentals can't be taken into Mexico due to insurance coverage.
blueridgeparkway.org/How much should I budget for fuel on a Summerfield RV trip?
Plan on roughly $0.30 to $0.55 per mile for fuel depending on the rig: a Class B campervan rental in Summerfield typically gets 18 to 22 mpg, a Class C motorhome averages 8 to 12 mpg, and a Class A sips closer to 6 to 9 mpg. North Carolina gas prices have hovered near the national average and tend to be slightly cheaper than Virginia just across the border. A weekend trip to Hanging Rock and back (about 90 miles round trip) in a Class C usually runs $35 to $50 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at the Sheetz or Costco in Greensboro before heading north, smaller stations near the state parks charge a premium.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Summerfield?
For state parks like Hanging Rock and Pilot Mountain, book exactly 6 months out from your arrival date through the official NC State Parks reservation system, that's when the booking window opens and popular weekends (especially fall foliage in October) disappear within hours. For private parks like Greensboro KOA Journey or Oak Hollow Campground, 2 to 4 months ahead is usually plenty, except for July 4th, Labor Day, and Furniture Market weeks in High Point. Pro tip: if your dates are sold out, set a free cancellation alert through services like Campnab, dozens of NC state park reservations open up every week.
ncparks.gov/passport/reservationsWhat are the local driving conditions like around Summerfield?
Driving an RV around Summerfield is genuinely easy compared to most metros. The town itself is rural and rolling, with wide two-lane roads like NC-150 and US-220 designed for trucks and farm equipment. You're about 15 minutes north of downtown Greensboro, where I-40, I-73, I-840, and I-85 converge, so avoid the morning rush (7 to 9 a.m.) and evening crawl (4 to 6:30 p.m.) when threading a Class A through interchanges. Watch for summer afternoon thunderstorms (the Piedmont averages 40+ storm days per year) and the occasional winter ice event from December through February. Pro tip: the Greensboro Urban Loop (I-840) is your friend, it bypasses downtown traffic entirely.
ncdot.gov/travel-maps/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Summerfield?
Most private campgrounds within an hour of Summerfield offer full hookups (30 and 50 amp electric, water, and sewer), bathhouses with hot showers, and on-site dump stations. Greensboro KOA Journey, Oak Hollow Campground, and Lake Reidsville Recreation Park all check those boxes. NC state parks like Hanging Rock and Pilot Mountain are more rustic: drinking water and hot showers are available, but there are no RV hookups or dump stations on-site, so plan to dump at a private park or the dump station at Greensboro KOA on your way home. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving town since some state park spigots are seasonal and may be turned off November through March.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/pilot-mountain-state-park/campingWhat will the inside of my RV rental actually have?
Expect more comfort than you'd guess. A typical motorhome rental in Summerfield comes fully stocked with a real bed (or two), a kitchen with a fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate-controlled AC and furnace, dining table, and seatbelts for everyone riding. Many rigs also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and a generator or solar for off-grid power. WiFi varies by host, some include a mobile hotspot, others recommend bringing your own. Each RVezy listing spells out exactly what's included, plus optional add-ons like bedding kits, camp chairs, and bike racks. Pro tip: message the host to confirm what's stocked versus what's an add-on before you pack.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Summerfield%2C%20North%20CarolinaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in the Summerfield area commonly offer add-ons like bedding and linen kits ($25 to $50), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, kitchen kits, generators, bike racks, and even fire-pit and grill packages. Pickup usually happens at the host's home in Summerfield, Oak Ridge, or nearby Greensboro, with a 45 to 60 minute orientation walkthrough before you roll out. Drop-off is the reverse: top off fuel and propane, return on time, and the host inspects the rig with you. Mileage policies are listed on each rental page so there are no surprises. Pro tip: bundling a delivery package with bedding and a kitchen kit lets you arrive at the campsite with literally nothing to set up.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Summerfield%2C%20North%20CarolinaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay the full rental amount through the RVezy platform at booking using a credit or debit card, with no cash changing hands at pickup. A refundable security deposit is also placed as a hold on your card (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value), which is released after the trip assuming the rig comes back in the same condition you received it. To avoid any deposit issues, take time-stamped photos and a quick walkaround video at pickup and drop-off in Summerfield. Pro tip: keep all receipts for fuel and propane refills, it makes any post-trip questions a 30-second conversation.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs winter RV camping near Summerfield actually doable?
Yes, and it can be magical. Winters in Summerfield are mild by RV standards, with average January highs near 46°F and lows around 31°F, plus only about 7 inches of snow per year. Many private parks (Greensboro KOA Journey, Oak Hollow, Lake Reidsville) stay open year-round with electric hookups so you can run a furnace or electric heater comfortably. If you're chasing snow, head to Pilot Mountain or the Blue Ridge Parkway after a storm for stunning, quiet scenery. Pro tip: when temps drop below freezing overnight, ask your host about heated tanks and disconnect the fresh-water hose between fills to prevent freeze damage.
