Campgrounds and RV parks near Township of Taylorsville, NC

Gem mining is the signature local activity. Emerald Hollow Mine in Hiddenite is a roughly 70-acre site where visitors can buy a bucket of ore to sluice and pick through, with emeralds and more than 60 other gems and minerals among the finds. Hiddenite Family Campground sits close enough to make it a short drive with kids. Rocky Face Mountain Recreational Area, just north of Taylorsville, is the other main draw. The park covers approximately 326 acres and includes six miles of hiking trails, two primitive campsites, rock climbing, a natural playground, a picnic shelter, and a community center. Rock climbing and rappelling require a valid permit, issued daily at the park office. Lake Hickory covers almost 4,223 acres with 105 miles of shoreline along the Catawba River between I-40 and Taylorsville, with several Duke Energy public access areas for boat launching. The Blue Ridge Parkway and the town of Wilkesboro, home to the MerleFest music festival held each spring, are both within easy day-trip range.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in the Taylorsville area. Daytime temperatures stay comfortable, and shoulder-season demand is manageable except during MerleFest weekend in late April, when Wilkes County parks fill first. Moravian Falls Family Campground and Cabin Rentals draws heavy MerleFest traffic given its location in Wilkes County near Wilkesboro, so book that weekend well ahead. Summer brings warm, humid weather and the highest family demand. Pools, creek access, and shaded sites become priorities. The camping season across most private parks in the Wilkesboro area typically runs from spring through late fall, with some facilities remaining open year-round. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the foothills through July and August. Winter camping is possible but limited. Hiddenite Family Campground operates year round with full-hookup sites, and Stoney Fork Campground and B and B also stays open year-round with electric, water, and sewer hookups. Freezing nights and occasional snow are realistic from December through February, so renters should confirm that hookups are winterized and that bathhouses are open before arrival.

Expect small, family-run parks rather than resort-style campgrounds. Sites tend to be shaded and set among hardwoods, often along a creek or river. Hiddenite Family Campground offers a pool, bathhouse, playground, pavilions, and small on-site farm animals, which makes it a strong pick for families with young children. Stoney Fork Campground and B and B features a small number of private sites with natural buffers between neighbors, each with a picnic table, fire ring, and water, sewer, and 30/50 amp electric. Cell service in the more rural properties can be limited, so download maps before arrival. Roads to some campgrounds are rural and narrow, and a few require care with longer rigs. Bring cash for incidentals, confirm pet rules if traveling with animals, and expect a friendly, low-key atmosphere rather than programmed activities.
