Campgrounds and RV parks near Washington, NC

The waterfront is the main draw. The North Carolina Estuarium in downtown Washington focuses on the ecology of the state's estuaries, the Tar-Pamlico River, and Pamlico Sound, with a boardwalk alongside the Pamlico River just outside the museum. Downtown streets hold boutiques, antique stores, and restaurants with river views. On the water, paddlers can put in for day trips on the Tar-Pamlico, and Sound Rivers operates camping platforms along the river that are accessible by water only. At Goose Creek State Park, activities include hiking, paddling, swimming, fishing, and picnicking, with a swamp boardwalk and butterfly garden on site. Multiple hiking trails wind through the 1,672-acre park, connecting to a swimming beach and various wildlife viewing areas.

Washington has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot and muggy, winters are short and cool, and rainfall is spread across the year. Many campgrounds in the Washington area operate year-round with varying amenities and reservation requirements, so trip planning is more about comfort and crowding than closures. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. April, May, and October bring pleasant weather with daytime highs in the 70s Fahrenheit, well suited to sightseeing and paddling. Summer runs hot and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and biting insects are common near the marshes. Late summer through fall carries hurricane and tropical-storm risk on the North Carolina coast, and heavy rain from tropical systems can flood low-lying sites. September tends to be the wettest month in eastern North Carolina, so travellers in September and October should watch tropical forecasts closely. Winters are mild but damp, with occasional freezing nights that rarely disrupt full-hookup camping.

Expect a mix of waterfront and wooded settings. Waterfront access is a significant draw, with several campgrounds offering direct water views or boat access. Private resorts around town typically offer full hookups, laundry, showers, and a pool or camp store, while state park sites are quieter and more basic. At Goose Creek State Park, the RV loop is well equipped but small. The RV camping area has 22 sites that all have full hook-ups (electric, water and sewer). One site is wheelchair accessible. Each campsite has a tent pad, a fire ring with grill, a picnic table and a lantern hook. A bathhouse sits near the loop entrance. Pack for humidity and biting insects in warm months, and plan to buy firewood on site rather than gathering it, since firewood is available for purchase at the visitor center and collecting wood in the park is not allowed. Cell service proves spotty throughout the park, with AT&T showing the most reliable coverage.
