Campgrounds and RV parks near Wentworth, NC

The Dan and Mayo Rivers anchor most outdoor activity. Mayo River State Park covers about 2,778 acres in Rockingham County and includes hiking trails, catch-and-release fishing ponds, Class II paddling water, and a waterfall on Fall Creek at the Deshazo Mill access. The Dan River is popular for tubing, kayaking, and canoeing, and Dan River Campground and River Adventures sits directly on the river with private access for registered campers. In town, the Museum and Archives of Rockingham County occupies the 1907 courthouse and interprets local history, with the restored 1816 Wright Tavern and the 1910 Old Jail adjacent. Rockingham County also preserves a set of historic wing dams and sluices from the 1800s Dan River Navigation System. Family-friendly stops include Lake Reidsville Recreation Park and the Chinqua-Penn walking trail in Reidsville.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV camping around Wentworth. Highs run in the mid-60s to mid-70s Fahrenheit, humidity is manageable, and rivers usually carry enough flow for paddling. Wildflower bloom and fall color both draw weekend traffic, so reserve early for Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day weekends. Dan River Campground applies stricter cancellation terms for those holiday periods, and NASCAR race weekends at nearby Martinsville Speedway also fill sites. Summer is the busiest tubing and swimming season. Afternoon thunderstorms are common from June through August, and heat with high humidity is the norm. The pool at Dan River Campground operates Memorial Day through Labor Day, and Mayo River State Park keeps its longest daily hours from May through August. Winter is quieter but usable. Snow is occasional and typically light, some state-park facilities run reduced hours, and monthly RV stays become easier to book. Freezing overnight lows are routine in January, so travelers should prepare hoses and tanks accordingly.

Terrain around Wentworth is gently rolling Piedmont with mixed hardwood and pine cover and easy river access. Roads into the campgrounds are paved to gravel and generally manageable for larger rigs, though the last mile into some river sites is narrow. Dan River Campground has a gated entrance, a bathhouse with laundry, a seasonal pool, walking trails, a playground, and a general store with propane refills. Cell coverage is reliable in and around Wentworth, Reidsville, and Eden, and campground Wi-Fi is common but not fast. Some campgrounds restrict pets during tent camping and cap tent stays at a few nights. Grocery, fuel, and RV supplies are easiest in Reidsville, Eden, or Madison, each within a short drive.
